Uniroyal Teen Driver Education Program

April 19th – April 23rd, 2004

Lockheed Martin – Marietta, GA

Teen Driver EducationTeenagers are dying in cars EVERYDAY!

You read about it in the newspaper, you hear about it on the radio and you see it on television. Teen drivers are dying!

Teen drivers have the highest crash risk of any age group. The problem is worst with teen drivers that are getting their license for the first time. They have the least driving experience and an immaturity that often results in risk-taking actions in cars. When compared to crashes of older drivers, drivers who are between the ages of 16 and 17 involve driver error. Overcompensating, improper braking, failure to yield and speeding are just a few of the most common errors with teens. Add distractions like cellular phones, loud music and more importantly, other teen passengers, and you've got a deadly combination. Teen drivers are more likely to have an accident when other teens are in the car. One in every three 16 and 17 year olds will be involved in a collision – mostly caused by excessive speed and inexperience behind the wheel. The largest cause of fatality with teens in the car is the lack of seat belt usage.

In the majority of Georgia communities, public schools no longer offer Driver Education courses to students. Approximately 30% of teens will have no formal driver education training before they get behind the wheel of an automobile.

The 2004 Uniroyal Teen Driver Education Program is Cox Radio's second annual event aimed at assisting teens in learning about Georgia driving laws, distractions while driving, the basics of car maintenance and how to react in a braking or skidding situation. The students will learn how to handle a police pull over, about seat belt and injury prevention, about the dangers of drinking and driving and much more.
