Neal, I have read your Book on the Fair Tax. I am not convinced that the Fair Tax would work for these reasons:
#1 Our check and balance would be that we can vote out our Congressmen if we do not like them raising the rates. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY LAWMAKERS GO UNCHALLANGED? LOOK AT ALL THE CONGRESSMEN WHO HAVE BEEN IN FOR YEARS/ DECADES AND NO-ONE CAN RUN BECAUSE THEY CANNOT COME CLOSE TO GETTING THE FINANCIAL SUPPORT THAT THE LOBYISTS GIVE THE INCUMBENT.
#2. There is nothing in the bill that prevents lawmakers from making themselves tax exsmpt--tax free number.
#3. Look at how many companies have moved off shore where they can pay pennies on the dollar for salaries, no benefits, etc and the cost of these items has not been reduced--the companies enjoy greater profits.
#4. Companies making widgets will have to pay taxes on the materials they use to make the item thus increasing the amount of the product--cost to public.
#5 States and the Fed. Government is at liberty to inflict other deductions to supplement healthcare, medicare, etc. They are at liberty to add anything they want in the future and we have no control. Then we would be in worse shape!

QUESTION: Can states institute term limits for US Congress--Reps and Senators? If congress had to go back to the community to work after a specific amount of time in office; had a 401K like the rest of us and not lifelong pension; had to pay for Cobra insurance until they got insurance I think a lot of the curruption on Capitol Hill would be eliminated. How do we get term limits with the additional limitations imposed on Congress?

Did you notice, whenever Biden was talking last nite, the camera was on him only and when Palin was talking the screen was split and showed Biden's laughing and smirking? How about we take 1/2 the $700B, send out a check to everyone over 18, suspend capital gains taxes for 1 year, let them pay off their bills, mortgages, etc., stimulate the economy, then tax them on the amount they received. Why is the governement buying apartment buildings. I have been in the business for 12 years and have bought several apartment properties and overpaying is the problem of the owner and the property should be sold at absolute auction by the mortgage holder. You can buy houses in Atlanta for $20K you should be able to buy Apartments at $10K a unit not at the $50K people paid 2 years ago.

Neal, you hit the nail on the head when you said Dave Ramsey was only on the radio to sell his cd's and books. My son, his wife and myself went to one of Dave's seminars. It was 5 hours long. Count in the time you drive (45 minutes) to and from, no drinks, even water, were allowed. That was ridiculous. Then after 2 hours he started selling his "stuff". He was putting his books on the stage for everyone to see, having his people run up and down the aisles selling, and where the concessions should have been (only drinks would have been wonderful), he had tables set everyone selling. No one could go out the doors. If they did, his people wouldn't let them back in. Some guys wanted to smoke a cigarette but they were told they couldn't. (Probably good for their health anyway.) The whole attitude of his people was so bad that we left after 3 hours and followed a lot of people out who were also disappointed. Dave is just out for the money. What a disappointment. We have always loved his show!

The problem is NOT liquidity - the Fed has been adding liquidity (and devaluing the dollar thus increasing the price of oil) for over a year.

It is a symptomatic problem - not a causal problem - that the credit markets are frozen. The credit markets are frozen means the ask price of MBS and CDOs are much higher (spread) than the bid price - thus no one is buying bad debt. The causal problem is the price of risk / return. Buyers of the bad debt have plenty of money / liquidity to buy this "bad" debt which does have a minimum value - since there is a piece of land or home at the end of each MBS / CDO piece of commercial paper.

Adding more liquidity will only execerbate the inflated prices of MBS and CDO already paid - this is inflation on top of inflation and this will cause more devaluation of the dollar which contributes to the trade deficit and cost of living / products / services.

So what is the answer - insurance. The government should NOT BUY the bad debt of banks at inflated prices - which is what Paulson would do for his buddies on Wall Street. The government should insure trasnactions for a minimum price (value) after being paid a premium - just like title insurance companies insure warranty deeds or car insurance companies do (replacement value) or just like the FDIC (FD Insurance C) did for WaMu last night.

The FDIC taking over WaMu and JP Morgan Chase coming in with plentity of liquidity and buying WaMu overnight - and - WaMu opening for business just like normal this morning PROVES THIS IS THE CORRECT APPROACH.

The House Republicans have the correct solution (insurance and maybe some loans), that being to expand the authority of the FDIC (or maybe give the Fed or Treasury the authority - although I personally don't trust Paulson or Bernake) to insure MBS and CDO commercial paper TRANSACTIONS. The beauty of this plan is the government gets paid UP FRONT and only if a security defaults below the price value insured at some point in the future, does the government pay out anything.

Though I am not an economist, IF mortgage holding institutions would: *renogiate with homeowners facing foreclosure by reducing their mortgage and interest rate to a level the homeowner could handle AND
*set up a repayment plan for the missed monthly payments at a new and lower rate, would the mortgage holders be better off AND the homeowners still be able to keep their homes? THEN, the other tax payers would not be footing the bill for the financial institutions that dropped the ball OR the homeowners who were so greedy or ignorant as to enter the original deals.

I heard Neal's rant today defending Belinda regarding the Croc lawsuit. I really think that this is gold-digging through a frivolous lawsuit. Where is it that Crocs state their product is a "safety shoe" like steel toe work boots etc... The comments below are why I struggle with even going to church anymore and why there is such a conflict between stay at home moms and working moms. I have worked most of my married life, not because I want to but because I have to. But I have chosen jobs that have given me as much time with my children as possible. I have three very individual and different children. My middle one has been my challenge so I guess I have screwed up too because he made bad choices. No one knows what goes on behind closed doors. Everyone knows the work and stress involved in achieving something so difficult as to be in charge and to be C.E.O. of a company. Most can imagine, but few have ever exerienced in our population the stress and work involved in being a Governor of an entire state. Even fewer--the Vice President and given the reality of McCain's age and health--the potential president of the world's only Superpower. The U.S. Presidency and the U.S. Vice Presidency are not offices for C.E.O.s who are currently running other companies. You can either step down from one and pursue the other--but you CANNOT pursue both. To do so is to committ a crime of negligence against not only your family but on our country. What does it say to other nations that a woman who's business is not being handled and who has clearly neglected her family to some extent, if we allow her to run our country into the same mosh pit of confusion that she has run her family into?

No, it is NOT her action that made her daughter pregnant. And NO I am not saying that is her inaction that made her daughter pregnant-but she hasn't clearly examined that situation well, and has had nearly zero scruitiny in her decision to make her daughter and her other children and her husband and the rest of her family front page news because she ignorantly or stupidly decided to put them there.

Though a regress, I say this to highlight the tattered garment in our conservative thiniking collectively as a whole--only because it is patched by a perfect, shiny, and Superior standard--aka our God Jesus Christ. When comparing our conservativeness to the rest of the world--it is important that our garment be as clean as it's standard. But if so, then be divine in your practice of your Christian and conservative beleifs--one of the most important being family.

As a woman--you can do anything a man can do. But as a mother, you have elected to serve a constituency called your family--and in doing so, it is irresponsibly ambitious and selfishly too remiss to put family aside for career. There is NOTHING progressive, or liberatingly femistic about being a "career woman" if you doing so leaves you negligent to your first chosen responsibility of being a mother! If your family is ailing, you must percieve this and if your children are in NEED of some guidance then as being "pro life" you need to take heedful responsibility in nurturing, raising, and enstilling those "conservative beliefs" into your OWN household before you go out and drill it into someone else's [household]!

I know as a "child" (as in the child of someone who's a parent I mean) of someone else, that my decisions and the consequences thereof soley rest upon my shoulders. However, I am FAR removed from 17 years of age and the juvenilistic thought process that come with such a short span on this planet. I do NOT blame Governor Paulin for her daughter's mistakes however, I do NOT think that she is out of the realm of that nurture role in which perhaps--as an athlete who excels only on the field, and his grades suffer for it--Mrs. Paulin's extracurricular success only further frustrates the failure of her first and foremost company--her family.

It is IRRESPONSIBLY AMBITIOUS to FAIL at running one business because you were spending TOO much time in another, less important--SUPPLEMENTARY career field.

If a person puts on a tattered old coat with a hole in it, and upon discovering that there is a hole--decides to patch up the hole with a brand new shiny, superior fabric--it only makes the entire outfit look ALL THE WORSE as the new and shiny fabric brings into scrutiny even worse the already bedraggled garment by highlighting with such a nearby comparison the faults of the outfit that could have been forgivably dismissed where they not unneedly placed under so revealing a spotlight. Knowing that your children are in need of YOU and MORE OF YOU is inherent and should be a little less than instinctively alertive in the conscious of any loving mother.

Primer: In between and prior to thinking independently--I've mainly voted Conservative throughout my voting career. However, I do NOT vote by party lines. Tonight I was listening to Jim Santoro's description of Hurricane Gustav's growth and direction. He mentioned that it potentially could hit the Gulf coast and could be a very strong hurricane. Then he added that if you are a Republican, you are not interested in hearing about that. Where does that come from? It appears that he is politicizing weather and my reading is that he believes that Republicans do not care about the planet.... There will be all sorts of Americans killed and hurt by any large storm. Why is that kind of commentary necessary?

Very touching but...the Obama'a are not preaching what they practiced. They got to where they are by wanting it enough to WORK for it. It is not about hitting a ball. It is as Neal says, supply and demand. If the demand is for a player that can hit the ball 400 feet....the player that can hit the ball 400 feet is worth more than the player that can hit the ball 300 feet. The industry brings in billions and the player makes millions. That is just the way it is. I agree that a PHD "should" make more but there is not a demand from an industry that would warrant a contract for a PHD of millions per year.....sorry. And wealth envy is all you are concerned about. Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton are worth millions but what do they contribute to society? If you want to be a millionaire by hitting a ball then you should work hard, practice, and be the best....the demand for you will be enormous. If you want to be a millionaire with a PHD then you work hard, study, graduate at the top of your class.....and discover a cure for cancer, or lupus, or diabetes or become the CEO of one of those "Evil" corporations that you poor souls so often have to deal with. But stop crying and wetting your pants because some jock makes more than you.

I was listening to the show yesterday and happen to hear you giving this caller a beat down for disagreeing with your take on, the salaries of various occupations.

Normally that wouldn’t provoke any concern, or response from me at all, however, your response to the caller made me want to reach through the radio and choke you free from that over inflated ego of yours. More to the point, you said the fact is, there are only a few people out there that can hit a ball 400 ft. and for that he should be paid and outrageous salary. “Supply and demand”. You also said the caller was jealous of the fact that he wasn’t making that kind of salary. “Now I know that’s not word for word how it was said”, but that’s the jest of the conversation as I heard it.

The fact is, Most male athletes of comparable size and strength can achieve comparable results with training and a high level of determination. That doesn’t mean they should automatically be paid some outrageous salary. And by outrageous I mean, A salary that’s so large, that the average lottery jack pot pails in comparison. That’s not Jealousy that’s a normal response from a normal person. Get a clue. Our society has set the defaults for these types of bonehead decisions and we’ll have to live with um, and through um, but that doesn’t mean that people that decide to say something about the right and wrong of it, should take a beat down from the elitist egomaniacs with a stage like yourself. Thanks to people who would think like you. A good portion of our youth will decide not to try for that PHD, or some other degree because they can make more money if they can just hit that ball a little farther than the other guy. Forget the education, PLAY BALL! That’s the answer.

Believe it or not, there are those of us out there who don’t make millions of dollars a year, we make an average income and are happy. I only have a problem with egomaniacs like yourself that think, just because you have been successful your field that gives you the right to blurt out your thoughts as to how the world should operate, and insult others

I love it when people complain about comments made on your show and tell you that they will never listen to you again. Come on, who you kidding... you know you will tune in tomorrow... its in your nature too. You like being affended and for that fact, I know you will listen again.

IS THERE ANY WAY TO LISTEN TO YOUR SHOW LIVE ON MY COMPUTER?

Why don't the people (the "government") insist upon legislation which states that ALL of our government officials must be educated in the field of interest, apply for the position wanted, be interviewed by the public, like any other job?

My suggestion for this "interview" is that "we the people" give each candidate a certain dollar amount for their champagne, allow NO OTHER FUNDS to be used, set several times on PRIME TIME television at the SAME TIME ( all candidates together), put each of them in a SOUND PROOF booth, ask the "same questions" of each one, and give them a certain amount of time to answer. Let the "people" decide what they think about their answers. Then we could vote for the candidate that we feel would represent US, rather than MONEY, POWER, and WHO YOU KNOW, putting a person into the most important positions offered by our country.
