ADVANCES IN PERSONALIZED MEDICINE.

How would like to have a ten year notice of an impending heart attack? Time enough to really lower your risk? That's the goal of a revolutionary new peventive cardiac care initiative being launched by the Piedmont Heart Institute, part of the Piedmont Hospital Medical Center complex. It's called "iCARE," and uses some revolutionary diagnostic imaging, intense history taking and other dianostic tools to nail down your risk -- and coupled with researched-based prevention tools, tailor a custom program for each client.

I spent some time interviewing Dr. Joseph I. Miller III, a cardiologist with Piedmont Heart Institute, and I'm thoroughly impressed. You'll hear his interview on our Sunday Atlanta's Morning News on September 14 after 8:00 AM. Between now and then, do some homework at their website and take the online diagnostic screening survey to start determining your risk. www.piedmontheart.org. Or call 404-605-5222.

NEW CANCER CHARTS PLOT TEN YEAR RISK.

I don't mean to appear to be the Grim Reaper, here, but while we're on the subject -- why not take a look at the AJC article and links: The Journal of the National Cancer Institute provide a broader perspective than most of the risk calculators on the Internet, because they cover the risks for 10 different causes of death. Link to article.

What others are saying

  • Re: Cub Scout article
Granted that Scout leaders who molest children are responsible for their actions. However, Scouts nationally have a fairly large amount of molestations to their discredit. Just doing a training is not enough. The Scout organization is responsible for their certification of leaders.
  • Cub Scout Leader Molestation Charge
Please be clear when you report on such things as the Cub Scout leader charged with child molestation that this is the act of an individual and not link it to the organization. Just as with any other perpetrator, it is not the fault of the company they work for, the Church they belong to, the organization they volunteer with, but they themselves who are to blame. While shcu things may be "big news" and keep the advertisers happy, that kind of report causes irreparable damage to a very respected institution that has kept many boys out of trouble, taught them the value of morality and respect for others, and prepared them for life as leaders.

The alleged child molester went against one of the, if not the most important part of BSA policy "TWO-DEEP LEADERSHIP"! NO leader is ever supposed to be alone with a boy, even his own son. That is for the protection of both the boy and the adult leader. There is a full program called Youth Protection Training that covers the accepted interaction between adult leaders and the boys - and all adult leaders are required to go through this program when they become leaders and then again every couple of years as continuing education. You can see what the program involves for yourself at this link:
    http://www.scouting.org/YouthProtection.aspx

Please give equal time to the good that Scouting does and not just the bad. Scouting is too valuable a resource for teaching boys to be good men and good leaders to just report when someone does the unthinkable and darkens the reputation of the organization.
  • marta
We do not need Marta---it has been defeated by a vote, for a reason. We used Marta to attempt to attend a Braves game, events at Georgia Tech (with grandchildren ages 4 and 5) and to go to the airport...These were a waste of our time and money. The use of single tracks resulted in us getting off, walking and paying for a taxi. Marta needs to correct ALL its problems BEFORE it expands any more. It does not operate what it has now efficiently.
  • Are things really that bad?
Your observations are precise and intelligent. I'd like to add another. For whatever reason, people adore being negative. And they have a tendency to exaggerate. Put the two together and there is an exaggeration of the negative, which may or may not be entirely valid. I learned a long time ago that people will be negative long before they are positive, as if they get some sort of reward for it. In the current hateful political climate, part of being hyperbolically negative is to blame Bush or the administration for anything and everything, and to do so with glee. So some of the negativity "out there" is due to those who will blame Republicans for whatever they can, to an unreasonable if not fictional degree, and some is due to people's pleasure at just being negative in general. The first have a stake in negativity and would never admit anything positive about Bush, Republicans, etc.
