Bowling, Beer and Cheese Steaks

It's a busy day in the Keystone State again today for both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton as they mark three weeks until the next big primary in the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination.

Wilkes-Barre is Ground Zero of the campaign on this Tuesday, as voters there will get to see both Obama and Clinton in separate events. That's the second time I remember that it has happened in the last month of campaigning. I think the last city to hold this title was Casper, Wyoming in March.

Obama also goes to Scranton today, while Clinton hits Philadelphia, Erie and Pittsburgh.

I will be interested to see the poll numbers in the Keystone State in coming days, especially since Obama has again opened up a lead in national tracking polls (10 points according to Gallup.)

Team Obama is definitely trying to humanize their man for the voters in Pennsylvania, instead of relying on massive rallies. A "charm" offensive is how one writer described it.

He stopped in for a beer at Sharky's Cafe in Latrobe, went bowling at Pleasant Valley Lanes in Altoona and held another rally where he drew 22,000 people at Penn State University. (Those numbers are still jaw dropping.)

Still, I'm not sure I want to repeat the bowling thing again.

The caption on a photo of Obama in the Detroit Free Press had the following caption:

"If you roll the ball with two hands you would almost certainly beat Barack Obama's score: 37."

The response of my father - born outside Detroit and someone who bowled 200s into his 60's, was about what you might expect.

"Was it duck pins?" he asked in disbelief.

It's still a heckuva lot better than John Kerry windsurfing.

It's important to show the Average Joe Six Pack that you aren't in the Ivory Tower. You gotta do normal things, like try the local Yuengling beer in Pennsylvania and eat something completely greasy, play some softball, pitch some horseshoes, etc.

But don't ask for Swiss Cheese on your Philly Cheese Steak like John Kerry did. You can Google it to find out why that was a faux pas.

And from another Democratic Scrapbook of the past, don't ride around in a tank with a helmet on.

  • regular guys?
I love it when these elitists try to pose as regular guys. Best was Kerry: "Can I get me a huntin' license here?" Surprised he didn't buy a pack of Redman with it.
