Conservatives Thrilled By McCain Pick
Most Democrats ridiculed the choice, with Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) labeling it "dangerous."
"The Vice President is a heartbeat away from becoming President, so to choose someone with not one hour's worth of experience on national issues is a dangerous choice," said Boxer, who then slapped McCain for trying to gain support from women.
"If John McCain thought that choosing Sarah Palin would attract Hillary Clinton voters, he is badly mistaken," added Boxer.
Meanwhile, the most important reaction to Palin came from more conservative quarters, especially religious leaders who have been cool to McCain from the outset.
James Dobson, who heads Focus on the Family, now says he thinks he will vote for McCain in November. He told a radio show Friday that the choice electrified a meeting of religious conservatives that he was attending.
"I mean to tell you, it set that crowd on fire," Dobson told Dennis Prager.
Also giving his support to Palin was Ralph Reed, who told the New York Times, "It is almost impossible to exaggerate how important that is to the conservative faith community."
In other words, this pick could motivate many more religious conservatives and evangelicals to vote for McCain.
That is a big deal.
As I was waiting for my plane from Denver to Minneapolis, I ran into my colleague David Brody, who is a reporter for the Christian Broadcasting Network. He told me that not only Dobson, but Tony Perkins and many others were absolutely thrilled.
Look at this pick from my point of view as I get ready for the Republican Convention here in Minneapolis.
One of the logical story lines during the convention week would certainly have been finding more conservative delegates - espeically those who had supported Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee - and ask them if they were definitely going to vote for McCain in November.
There would have been easy stories to write about "Conservatives Grumbling Over McCain," just like we wrote stories about Hillary supporters not wanting to back Obama as the Democratic Convention got underway.
Now, McCain has seemingly brought the evangelical Christian Right onto his bandwagon.
As for women who supported Hillary, I don't believe they are going to go en masse over to McCain because of this pick, especially since Palin is against abortion.
But even if you get a few here and there, that's better than none. And if McCain is getting more conservatives voting for him, that's even better.
This has been a fascinating day, because the choice was so outside the "political consensus" that everyone seems to be all over the place in how they are reacting to the choice.
I like stories like that, because when things are predictable, you can write those stories in your sleep.
What others are saying
- confusedI guess I am confused when I hear people comment about Palin's inability to manage her family while leading a country. Are these remarks sexist? Does anyone question a man when put in this position? A note to all men out there making these remarks...women are the best multi-taskers. I was probally voting for McCain in the fall anyway but this confirms it for me. For the record...I would have liked to see Gov. Polenti (MN) on the ticket as well.
- Sarah PalinSounds like responses pretty much split along party lines here. We have a Republican female applauding the choice and what sounds like a liberal criticizing Palin. I have to ask, why is it that so many Democrats who find nothing wrong with aborting a child are now so concerned that little Trig Palin's mom provide him the attention he needs while serving in political office. Please, you can't have it both ways. Either women can be working moms and succeed in the workplace like feminists assert or else we all need to take off our shoes and get back into the kitchen. Which is it?
- Sarah PalinI am like many women in the middle who have longed for representation in the White House and only shrill, extreme choices like Hilary and Ferraro. I do not agree with Sarah Palin on every issue, but her voice sounds a lot more like mine than Hillary, Michelle Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, et al. I haven't been this excited about any candidate of either party for years. And don't tell me that a mother of five who has grown up and governed a state located 13 miles from Russia doesn't know anything about diplomacy and management. We've needed a woman's voice in the discussion of moving our country forward. Hilary proved the nation was ready for a woman and John McCain listened.
- Sarah PalinThis will make things interesting. Other than that, I don't get it. McCain has placed no experience on the ticket with him, knowing his health and medical history. How is this putting country first? Also, has any other working mom thought about her choice to take on all this with a four month old baby - with special needs?? Just a thought.
- Sarah PalinFrom an objective and also (let's admit it) emotional point of view she is a great pick! She has shown she can run a pretty complicated State and make positive progress that will benefit the state and its residents - and she did it by going around the politics as usual beauracracy. From an emotional point of view she will pick up considerable female votes because she is what a majority of women aspire to!
- I am going with The Dems this year and I have to say that I feel sorry for McCain. Besides the talk show hosts who wants to sell more Bush terms, no conservatives are excited about his VP pick. I hope Neal does not stoop this low and start selling Palin. Fonnity (Hannity) will sell anything republican and so I expect him to sell Palin, but Neal, not you! Ron Paul/Romney should've been the Rep. Ticket. I would be ashame right now to say I am a Repblican. Anyone who buy McCain/Palin ticket from Hannity should know that they are stupid.
