Auto Bailout Winners & Losers

Now that we've had the weekend to hash through the auto bailout announcement made last Friday by President Bush, it's time to think about whether there were winners and losers in that aid plan for General Motors and Chrysler.

It might be that the one automaker which didn't take any emergency aid - Ford Motor - could be a winner, simply because they can make a case to consumers that they aren't about to go belly up.

While GM and Chrysler are winners for now, it may only be for the short term. If they are going to get more aid from the Obama Administration and the new Congress, those two companies will have to make some big cuts.

The United Auto Workers may not be a winner in this at all. It seems logical that jobs and benefits will have to be cut along the way by GM and Chrysler.

Heck, if you are closing every single one of your manufacturing plants in North America for a month, what does that tell you about excess capacity?

The stockholders could be winners and losers. If the feds get stock warrants for putting billions into these two companies, it could bring profits, like the billions the feds made off the Chrysler bailout in the 1970s.

Or the stock values could be wiped out if the companies ultimately go to bankruptcy.

Bottom line - the winners right now are GM and Chrysler. Whether they stay winners as they try to stay alive in the New Year, the Obama Administration and Congress will have a say on that.

I am definitely in the minority on this view, but I still think if the companies aren't willing to make drastic - and I mean DRASTIC cuts and changes - then I don't think lawmakers will be willing to write check after check after check for billions in aid.

We'll see what happens in the months ahead.

What others are saying

  • I still don't understand...
What GM/FORD/Chrysler intend to do about the fact that their vehicles are no longer in demand. The plans I've heard make the assumption that there will be new buyers out there, but as I see it they have fewer and fewer potential customer's everyday.

Besides making drastic cuts, they need to present something that will make them relevant again on the international automobile sales scene, otherwise the Toyota's and Honda's of the world will continue to take a bigger slice of the pie every year. As in investor I would be steering clear of a company incapable of reading the market, why would the government do the complete opposite?
  • Fail File Restructure - Merry Christmas !
I still maintain they should Fail-File-and restructure. Our current economy doesn't bode well for their recovery under most circumstances. I think all that has been accomplished is a multi-billion dollar handout with little to zero hope on any return on the investment. Chapter 11 is on the horizon in 2009. We'll see.
  • Auto Buyers Will Decide
    Jamie Dupree,

If the American public reduce the number of purchases of Big Three cars significantly, the situation will become untenable. On the other hand, if the American public increases its purchases of Big Three cars, the proponents of the bailout will be vindicated.

The "green movement" has put its money where its mouth is. If those who are currently complaining want to do more than whine about the bailout - let them do likewise - otherwise quit complaining.

Don't count on it, Jamie. The Democrats are thick as thieves with the UAW. They'll write more checks! As I understand it, UAW workers receive most of their pay and benefits while being laid off, so not much difference for them. The best thing the Congress and PE Obama can do is let these companies file for bankruptcy and restructure, just like the airlines did! What I want to know is who is going to bailout taxpayers like me - with 50% of my income going to taxes - the ones who are really getting squeezed by all this!
