The Voters Unseat Rep. Jefferson
Even though many people had been calling for Rep. William Jefferson of Louisiana to be booted from the Congress for several years, it didn't look like that was going to happen anytime soon.
Jefferson was indicted 17 months ago in a federal court in Virginia. The charges included racketeering, soliciting bribes, wire fraud, money-laundering, obstruction of justice and conspiracy.
Remember - this was the guy who had $90,000 in cash in his freezer. The bills were given to him by a federal informant, who gave $100,000 to Jefferson as a bribe.
Jefferson was able to get a federal court to rule that the FBI raid on his Congressional office was actually unconstitutional, which had set back his prosecution.
Well, while the gears of justice were slowly grinding for Jefferson, he forgot to do one thing, which was keep the support of his district.
Over the weekend, a Republican defeated Jefferson in his heavily Democratic Louisiana district, as attorney Anh "Joseph" Cao beat Jefferson 50-47 percent.
That was a seat the GOP probably never thought they would win, but they took a chance and plowed some money into the race in recent weeks.
It again shows that the voters can finally reach a point, where they administer term limits on their own.
