As the new Congress convenes today, we could have some sharp elbows flying over two disputed Senate seats, from Illinois and Minnesota.

In Minnesota on Monday, the state elections board certified that Democrat Al Franken was the winner of the Senate election there, prevailing by 225 votes out of almost 3 million in all.

Senate Democrats loudly proclaimed that the race was over, as they started itching in public about seating Franken as soon as possible.

"The race in Minnesota is not over," said Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell, who has some Republican Senators talking about a filibuster to keep Franken on the sidelines.

"Under the Minnesota law an election certificate does not issue until litigation has been concluded," said McConnell.

And for now, there will be at least one lawsuit from Sen. Norm Coleman, which means this seat will stay in limbo for at least a little while, but sooner or later it seems, Franken will be the Senator from Minnesota.

As for the Illinois Senate seat once filled by Barack Obama, the guy appointed by Gov. Rod Blagojevich will be here in DC today, trying to be seated, but that's not going to happen.

Former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris will present his papers, those will be ruled as insufficient, and then Burris will evidently hold a news conference.

At this point in time, we aren't expecting any fireworks, or an effort by Burris to force his way onto the Senate floor, as officials will have staffers, police and others blocking his way just in case.

At some point it seems, both the Illinois and Minnesota Senate seats will go to the Democrats, giving them 59 in the Senate, much better than the 51-49 advantage they had the past two years.

What others are saying

  • Franken Folly Follows suit
America has already elected the unqualified chosen one.We have a combo of when Harry met Pelosi and was joined by Barney, don't talk with your mouth full Franks in place. What's next for our country but topping it off with electing an unqualified washed up comedian? We're doomed.
  • How Fitting
First Jessie 'The Body' Ventura and now Al Franken (SNL Comic) and we thought the southern Florida voter's were incompetent. Minnesota has obviously achieved a new low in voter 'intelligence'.
  • Minnesota Senate Seat
Do not say that in the end that Franken is going to win. We have checks and balances in this country for a reason and Franken has not won squat yet. Justice would be Norm Coleman having all the votes counted and then be rightly declared winner of Minnesota. I also have to agree with someone who already pointed out, what were the people of Minnesota thinking when they voted for Al Franken who is a bought and paid for Obama cronie.
  • Experience?
It's funny how VP candidate Sara Palin and even NY senator prospect Caroline Kennedy are questioned about their experience. However, no one nationally has questioned Al Franken. Al Franken has NO EXPERIENCE that qualifies him for this position.
  • AL Franken
It's not Al Franken I'm concerned about, it's the idiot people who voted for him! I have to work with them every day, and it's getting harder all the time.
  • Minnesota
Democrats know that we know that they cheated. They don't care... all they want is the power.
