Obama News Conference
The President acknowledged that he has an array of critics on an array of problems, but he gave no hint that he's thinking of folding up his tent and heading back to Chicago anytime soon.
Mr. Obama mixed the expected amount of hope about future economic growth with admissions that times are tough for many right now.
He noted that Congress wasn't just going to rubber stamp his budget, but he refused to yield at this early point in the debate, even as key Democrats were beginning to carve apart his budget proposal of two weeks ago.
The President used familiar terms like "no silver bullet" and "patience" to urge Americans to stick with him, arguing that he's doing his best to solve economic troubles facing the nation.
On AIG, even when given the chance, Mr. Obama refused to jump headlong into the fray over the AIG bonuses, explaining why he didn't rush to the microphones after being told of the bonus fiasco.
"It took us a couple of days because I like to know what I'm talking about before I speak," he said flatly.
There were no gaffes, no big time lines, no one liners to be remembered.
Instead it was a "stay the course" kind of news conference, sending the message that he's on the job, trying to turn the ship of state.
"The last 64 days has been dominated by me trying to figure out how we're going to fix the economy," the President noted accurately.
And that he said is the issue that will determine his fate.
"The American people are judging me exactly the way I should be judged."
The effective date of that judgment, January 20 of 2013.
What others are saying
- NotesHe did acknowledge a list of reporters in the order he called on them. Were their questions scripted?
- Obama Talk ShowIf he likes to know what he is talking about before he says anything then why the need for a teleprompter?
- Hope for the Best, Expect the WorstWith the election of our current president last Novemeber I held my breath and thought the title of this passage "Hope for the best, Expect the worst." Now barely 2 months under his belt we've moved to the second part of the saying.....we tried to impeach Clinton for his indiscretions...can we impeach Obama for his incompetence?
- Some of this stuff sounds like it was copied and pasted from the radio shows many here seem to let do your thinking for you.
- ObamaIt is a shame that the first A/A we elect as a President is one that is so liberal he is not in touch with main stream America. Now everyone is going to look at all A/A's as bleeding heart liberals without compassion for anyone but the poor and downtroden.
- Silver BulletPresident Obama keeps staying "no silver bullet" is that a reference to werewolves, the Lone Ranger, or Coors Light beer?
- Hey, what the heck to folks expect???Hey, what the heck to folks expect??? We elected a guy that is the definition of an empty suit. He canât speak unless he has his teleprompter and if he does he sticks his foot in his mouth. He has no executive experience, yes heâs an intelligent individual, but heâs an idealistic flaming liberal and from his actions has no real interest in fixing the economy. He speaks compassion, but his agenda comes first and you/we just have to suck it up. Remember 2010 and vote ...
- The "News" Reporters?!When did "Ebony" become a news magazine????? Where was Oprah and E! LOL
- "The last 64 days has been dominated by me trying to figure out how we're going to fix the economy," the President noted accurately.
Is Obama saying he has no plan to fix the economy? - Public SpeakingGo back and listen to him answering questions....every other word was "uh". Not to mention that he kept saying "gonna" and "ta" (instead of "to") or "goin-ta" As in "I'm goin-ta work on it". He may be an eloquent speaker for prepared speeches, but his public speaking skills when he's on his own don't make the grade. I agree with other posters out there....they voted on OJT....too sad.
- Mr. Obama's AIG outrageMr. Dupree,
I have a theory on why President Obama has toned-down his outrage on the AIG bonuses. I think he realized that people were going overboard (death threats etc). And if an AIG employee were hurt or killed by an outraged citizen, President Obama would be responsible for stirring it up. - PresBoLast night was the first time that I can remember when reporters asked a President for permission to ask a question about some subject. Where's Helen when you need her?
- TeleprompterYes, there WAS a big monitor in the back from which he read his prepared remarks.
- Re: TeleprompterThere was a huge screen in the back he was reading. After his last speech on primetime, he was hammered by many people for reading the teleprompter which results in him looking side to side (ala watching a ping pong match) without looking the people in the eye. So, now they decide to put the screen straight in front so he makes eye contact with the people.
- CentristJamie--I wanted you to know that I appreciate your comments. You seem to be a "centrist" and not lean one way or the other in your reporting, and that is refreshing. Thank-you.
- It's time for change again! We are in trouble. This country voted for on the job training.
- TeleprompterJamie,
I noticed there were no teleprompters visible during the speech last night, and I did not see the President turning pages of a speech; was there a large screen in the back of the room with the speech displayed on it?
