Health Care Reform Details
There are more hearings in the Congress on health care reform today, but once again, everyone is just chewing around the edges, because no one has any details on what is going to be proposed by Democrats and the Obama Administration.
When I say there are no details, that's because there are no details about what exactly the White House wants done on reform.
Oh yeah - we have a basic idea of what Democrats want to do. For many, their answer is to get the government more involved and deliver health care coverage to all Americans.
But if you go looking for any details, you aren't going to find any specifics.
So if you are waiting for me to write a lengthy blog exploring the hundreds of pages of proposals coming from the White House, I'm waiting to do that as well.
They just don't exist right now.
Did I mention that there are no details available?
That's why, when I see officials of the American Medical Association doing a high profile event with President Obama on Monday at the White House, it is an interesting time in this debate.
15 years ago, the AMA was demanding changes in thirty seven specific areas of the Clinton health care reform proposal, but they aren't doing that now.
Why?
Because there are no details for them to object to as yet.
What is different this time is that the Obama Administration is trying to get key players involved with the "idea" of reform, and then hope they don't run for the hills when all the bureaucratic language of a bill is unveiled.
That will be the key test for Democrats, because the specfics are certain to unleash a storm of protest, and Republicans are more than ready for this fight.
That was obvious in a report from the New York Times this morning, which said 45 moderate to conservative House Democrats sent a letter to their party leaders denouncing the secrecy that is enveloping this effort.
Republicans won the battle over the details 15 years ago, and it won't surprise me one bit to see them win that political battle again in 2009.
But until those specifics come out, this debate remains one that is unfocused.
