Health Care Update
Another day with a lot of talk, but not much in the way of publicly announced progress on health care reform in the Congress, as President Obama once more made the case for action at a Tuesday news conference.
"When it comes to health care, the status quo is unsustainable and unacceptable," said Mr. Obama. "So reform is not a luxury, it's a necessity."
The President also smacked down a letter sent by Blue Cross Blue Shield and an insurance industry group, which argued forcefully against the idea of a public government health care option.
"If private insurers say that the marketplace provides the best quality health care, if they tell us that they're offering a good deal, then why is it that the government -- which they say can't run anything -- suddenly is going to drive them out of business? That's not logical," the President said flatly.
Meanwhile on the insurance industry side, the message was basically, take this bill and put it where the health benefits don't shine.
"A government-run plan - no matter how it is initially structured - would dismantle employer-based coverage, significantly increase costs for those who remain in private coverage, and add additional liabilities to the federal budget," said the industry letter to key Senators.
While the President expressed his support for reform, a Senate committee entered a sixth day of public work to draft a health reform measure.
Once again, it was very slow going, and once again Democrats did not unveil the details of the government option and more that will fill several blank sections of the Senate bill.
Meanwhile, a small bipartisan group of Senators continues to meet as well, searching for a way to bridge the gaps between members of both parties who want a health reform deal.
They suffered a setback last week when the Congressional Budget Office found their plan cost $1.6 trillion, forcing the Senate Finance Committee to delay work on a final bill until next month.
Finance Chair Sen. Max Baucus told reporters that the group is still trying to reach a deal and that this bill "will be ready when its ready." In other words, think July.
Baucus also said his group is focused on a cost of around $1 trillion, which is still a lot for many Democrats to stomach, but better than $1.6 trillion.
So have you found anything interesting in the House or Senate health care bills? Why not? You know you have some time to read a few pages instead of playing Solitaire yet again.

Get cracking, dammit.
What others are saying
- obey your master wall street insurance companiesWe should not let the government ration health care, cuase long waits, lots of paper work, high and fast rising costs, questionable outcomes, and decide for me what doctors I can go to and what treatments I can get and dictate how much will be covered. That's what private insurance companies are for.
- private health careThe American way is to put a nameless faceless insurance bean-counter between me and my doctor to ration care and make decisions for us.
- leave current system alone its perfectI like the current health care system. My employer and my insurance company decide how much it costs me, who my group of doctors and hospitals are, what treatments and services are covered, up to a limited amount they decide, and what forms and paper work red tape I have to file, and what family history or personal existing conditions disqualify me, and if my kids and/or partner same or different sex is covered. I love the bureaucracy and rationing they do, its ok because its private profit.
- private health careI like my emploer provided plan, and if he taxes us on it we will pay for $12,000 of non-income to help pay for deadbeats. I deliver rural mail, and trust me, SSI all have cell phones, dishnetwork and cash paying jobs. If they are not on disability, they are trying to get it. I deliver more mail from lawyers than anything else. They could pay for their heath care, but then the beer and cigarettes would have to go. The beltway has no clue about rural America, and everybody should pull their own weight.
- Shot at Blue CrossDoes the President not understand that the government version of health care will not be in competition with Blue Cross? The market won't dictate ANYTHING in the government "option". The government will dictate the terms, raise the cost of the current insurers policies and then steal a trillion dollars from our children to pay for his vote buying plan.
- Time spentIf they do decide to do this, I will feel better if actually take time to think it through rather than just rushing it through to make someone happy. It will be complex and needs serious thought behind it, if it is done at all.
