Supreme Court Watch

While Republicans have been trying to stir the pot over Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor, the current Justices could do some of that work for them as early as today.

Seven cases are still to be ruled on by the court in this term, including a controversial matter involving firefighters from Connecticut and a promotion exam that the city of New Haven said was unfair to blacks and hispanics.

Judge Sotomayor agreed with the city that the test was unfair, a decision that seems likely to be overturned by the court.

Whether it results in any judicial potshots at Sotomayor in the Supreme Court opinion will certainly be watched closely.

The Court will release some decisions today, and probably wrap things up next week.

Meanwhile, GOP Senators have been trying to get in some shots at Sotomayor's nomination, using a series of speeches and news conferences to get some attention on Capitol Hill in recent days.

Yesterday, it was on the issue of the Second Amendment, as Republicans accuse Sotomayor of being against the right to bear arms.

"Judge Sotomayor held that the Second Amendment is not a fundamental right," said Sen. Jeff Sessions, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Sotomayor meanwhile continues to quietly meet with Senators, as she ticked off five more on Wednesday. Her hearings are set to begin on July 13.

It will be very interesting to see how Senators respond and how the Republicans deal with the firefighter ruling, because it could be a big deal, depending on how it is written.

One note: if the decision is issued next week, the political ramifications may actually be less than they would be today, because the Congress will be out of session, and that means no Republican Senators in Washington to react to the court's decision.

One more thing, today is evidently Sotomayor's 55th birthday - we'll see if the Supremes give her a present or not.
