Health Reform Push

It seemed more like a campaign rally than anything else on Wednesday, as President Obama held a town hall meeting on health care reform in Virginia.

With the crowd and some of the questions hand picked by the White House, it wasn't surprising that it was more PR than anything else. Heck, that's what most White House events are about, no matter the party.

"I believe we can accomplish it this year," the President said of reform. "But in order to make it happen, I'm going to need ordinary Americans to stand up and say, 'Now is the time.'"

The message from Mr. Obama was one he's been repeating for weeks, that the status quo is not acceptable. He said that's what the special interests want.

"But when the American people decide that something needs to happen, nothing can stop us," said the President.

Is Congress listening on this break week? Oh sure, some lawmakers are, but for the most part, the heavy lifting that wasn't finished at the end of last week probably won't be finished next week either, especially how to pay for reform.

The President renewed his public support yesterday for his plan to raise money by lowering the deductions allowed on tax returns for top earners.

But that's gotten a cold shoulder from many in the Congress so far. Maybe it will change. Maybe it won't.

If there's no plan by the end of the first week in July from the Democrats on how to finance reform, it could be a long month.

Stay tuned for the fireworks after July 4th.

What others are saying

  • health care smealth care I got mine FU
Are there no prisons? Are there no work houses? Are there no charities? Are there no churches? A poor excuse to pick a mans pocket. Bah Humbug on health care for all. Humbug I say.
  • cut your government spending not mine
All of us real patriots always have a list of other peoples programs we want cut, never anything we like. Lets list all the cuts we want that will impact us or something government does that we like, like national security, aviation safety, commerce, free trade etc. Cons can't do it, libertarinots can't do it.
  • sick lady in town hall meet
Tell that lady with the tumor and no health care the Cons want her to sit down shut up die to relieve the excess population of sick people, that's their health care plan.
  • Health Care Reform
As both a healthcare recipient and a provider, it's my opinion that what's wrong with the industry cannot be "fixed" by the government dole. Prices are out of sight, therefore, we feel that we need insurance to help cover the exhorbitant cost. The business-as-usual medical suppliers have worked very hard for many years to falsely elevate the price for supplies and services, and the hospitals and clinics are forced to buy at those prices. These are passed on to the consumer exponentially and there's no end in sight. Our hospital is forced by a contract to buy our goods and services from only certain vendors. We aren't even allowed to buy a bottle of Clorox from Wal-Mart at a reasonable cost (let's say $1.00) but must buy from the contract vendor at the super-inflated price of nearly $7.00 for the same container! Healthcare reform needs to start at the base costs of the services provided. Encourage competition. Otherwise, what we will experience will be like giving a trauma victim a Band-Aid.
  • health care reform
My take is that this is an issue that, unfortunately, Americans are wanting and needing because the general workforce, and maybe the population as amajority wants to be taken care of. Where are the real patriots that built and founded this great nation? I wish I knew.
Health Care will be the next in the growing list of programs that keeps dumbing down Americans, and we let them do it. Them are the power hungry individuals - Republicans included, that protect their own interests instead of serving others.
I do not think of this a power grab by politicians, but filling the vacuum left by the inability, or the excusability(my word) that Americans do not want to take responsibility for themselves. European countries went through the same Renaissance during their maturing process. It seems that Pioneers become wusses after a few hundred years of evoluton.
Aggravates the devil out of me as someone that tries like hell to help small business succeed.
  • Health Reform Push
Again, another POWER GRAB by the Obama administation. Just as the takover of big banks and 2/3 rds of the countries auto industry, Obama uses the power of the presidency to 'create a crisis' and convince the american public that the federal government will save the day. Problem is he has no proven real solutions. He's writing checks that WE can't cash. The Republicans need to fight fire with fire. If Obama is in the media spotlight almost daily like a used car salesman touting his redorick. The Republicans should fight fire with fire with their own informecials emphesising the reality of the situation. Otherwise, we'll spend our way right into bancruptcy.
