Names Of The Dead

After making himself into a household name in political circles a few weeks ago, Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) is at it again, this time angering Republicans with a new web site intended to highlight support for health care reform in the Congress.

I can't make this stuff up.

The Congressman unveiled a web site called namesofthedead.com - you read that right - part of his effort to argue that the lack of action on health reform is actually leading to the deaths of thousands of people who do not have health insurance.

As if it wasn't enough to roll that out on the floor of the House, Grayson also took time to use an appearance on MSNBC last night to label Republicans "the enemy of America."

This guy is a talk show booker's dream. Invite him on, add water and stir, and he serves up political invective to thousands of viewers.

Every time he hits the House floor from now on, we're going to be scrambling for our tape recorders in the press galleries of the Capitol to make sure he doesn't say something completely and absolutely over the top.

But first, back to our regularly scheduled news report.

So the Florida Democrat goes to the House floor Wednesday afternoon and starts talking again about how thousands of people die each year because they did not have health insurance.

He mentioned that a few weeks ago when he "apologized" to the dead for the failure of Congress to act on health reform, that after he had accused Republicans of having a plan for health reform that basically revolved around having people "die quickly."

As for Republicans, they must have some kind of Video Red Alert system that blows a giant whistle whenever Grayson appears on the House floor, because their reaction time is down to just a few minutes.

"What is wrong with this man?" asked Andy Sere of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

"Once again, he's proved himself to be an abject embarrassment," as Sere then worked in the phrase "circus clown" to his press release.

Sere labeled the namesofthedead.com effort a "shameless stunt," and then went on to accuse Grayson of violating House Ethics rules by including a link on that site to the Grayson for Congress campaign web site, where you can give the Congressman some cash for his re-election bid.

Love him or hate him, right now Grayson is one of the hottest properties in terms of Democrats in the Congress.

It's really a bit of what I would call the Dan Rather Syndrome, the reason that people watched Rather for years when he was the anchor of the CBS Evening News, because you never knew what crazy stunt Rather was going to pull when the camera light went on.

(Remember his wacko line to end his newscast for awhile, "Courage"? Or maybe a few quotes like, "This race is hotter than the Devil's anvil." How about, "If a frog had side pockets, he'd carry a hand gun." The list goes on and on.)

I'm laughing to myself as I write this blog. The Daily Double mention of Alan Grayson and Dan Rather will probably cause a few people to spit the bit today. If so, I've done my job.
