The Blueberries Are Back
Yes, the blueberry money is back again.
Just about six months ago, the internet was hopping with outrage, as voters denounced the hundreds of earmarks stuffed in the Omnibus budget bill that wrapped up work on the federal budget.
One of the many items that sparked outrage was $209,000 for blueberry research at the University of Georgia, as the senior GOP Senator from Georgia, Saxby Chambliss got an earful for supporting the blueberry pork.
Well, the $209,000 is back again - another $209,000 for blueberries in Georgia - in the finalized Agriculture Appropriations bill for 2010.
And the same four members who sponsored the first shot of money in the Omnibus, are on board with this blueberry money as well: Sen. Chambliss, Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-GA), Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA) and Rep. Jim Marshall (D-GA).
Nothing like a bipartisan earmark which is labeled, "Initiative to Improve Blueberry Production and Efficiency."
But that's not the only blueberry money in the bill. New Jersey would get $550,000 for "Cranberry/Blueberry Disease and Breeding."
Massachusetts would get $160,000 in Cranberry/Blueberry research money as well.
In all, there were 461 earmarks in the Ag bill, which really isn't very many when you think about it. The Energy & Water bill that was approved by the House last week had over 2200.
But here's your list. I will try to break it down by lawmaker in coming days.

What others are saying
- If you like to eat, especially food grown in America, then you will be personally benefitting from most of these earmarks.
- PromisesThe promise made was to eliminate earmarks, get rid of lobbyists and reduce the deficit. Get rid of everyone. They are punishing the good with the Healthcare Bill - punish all those in Congress and Vote them out and let them know -- no more spending our $$.
- BlueberriesIf this wasn't so outrageous it would be laughable. We just have to clean house. Soon!
- Term Limits to limit pork barrel spendingWe already have term limits..they're called elections. Vote and encourage your family, friends and colleagues to do the same if they want change.
- earmarksMost of these earmarks are outrageous! We desperately need term limits for all congress members. We are spending ourselves into a point of no return.
- I'm surprised...This bill wasn't killed because of funding for Morman Crickets in Nevada. The Liberals should have raised the separation issue, while the conservatives should have opposed promoting polygamous insects.
- This is absolutely amazing. The arrogance of these idiots in congress is surpassed only by the electorate that continues to put them there. I hope we find some way to etch their names permanently into marble in DC and memorialize them forever as the crooks they are and for spending our money and ruining the future of our country only to buy votes from idiots that will continue to elect them.
- OMFG! This is ridiculous. Time to make our voices heard people.
- EarmarksIncredible!! If this is not a perfect reason for term limits, there never will be one. Senators and Representatives are all the same...crooks who use earmarks to buy votes. And, to think? We voted the bastards into office!
- Get him outTime to give Saxby the door. I am so tired of the hypocitical practices with him. Stop the waste, it is not necessary. Time to stop the crazy spending.
- resourcesClearly resources need protection if we are to balance food, fiber and energy production with productive soil, abundant clean water, healthy air plus thriving plant and animal communities. Yes, these earmarks need to tracked for accounatbility. I do not know about you folks but I am in support of government spending tax dollars on conserving resources, improviing productivity and enhancing habitats.
NRCS has an excellent track record and is fully accountable for all dollars spent. Why are taxpayers not demanding more funding be sent to increasing productivity while minimizing degredation?
How do you feel bout this? - Good GriefThis stuff just makes me sick. What's the solution to this sort of thing, when Congress is rewarded for 'bringing home the bacon'?
http://www.letters2congress.com - Get 'em out!We have the power. Every incumbent is OUT in 2010. Even if you think "your" congressman is the best-------vote them out!
- "Preserve, Protect and Defend the Constitution"Can someone (preferably one of our representative in Washington) point out to me the paragraph in the US Constitution that requires or empowers the Federal government to spend monies on projects like these? And don't say "common good"--Madison told us what that means and it wasn't this.
- Absolutely incredible. Why can't they just write the bill for it's purpose and that be it? No wonder America is so much in dept.
- What a waste of taxpayer money...and in just one bill.
- What a waste of taxpayer money...and in just one bill!
