A Different Seat
Rep. Colin Peterson (D-MN) is Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee. But if you're looking for him on the House floor right now, don't look on the side of the aisle where Democrats are sitting.
Peterson made clear earlier this week that he will vote 'no' on the Democratic health reform bill, spurning any efforts to get him to change his mind.
But the veteran Democrat from Minnesota obviously didn't want to hear any more pleas from his colleagues, so he's been hanging out on the Republican side of the aisle.
"He moved in yesterday," chuckled one of the doorkeepers in the Speaker's Lobby, which is where reporters can go to seek out members just off the House floor.
And sure enough, there was Peterson, walking from the Democratic end of the Speaker's Lobby to the Republican and grabbing a seat amongst a group of rural Republicans.
Peterson isn't the only Chairman to spurn his leadership, as Rep. Ike Skelton, who runs the Armed Services Committee is also going to vote 'no' on health reform.
It's a brutal time for those on the fence, as they get pestered by fellow lawmakers both pro and con.
I remember one Democrat years ago doing his best to avoid phone calls from President Clinton. But finally, the guy got on the phone, and agreed to vote yes.
He lost his re-election bid a year later.
That's a real worry for some Democrats - not Peterson - but others who might want to disappear when the roll is called.
