Counting To 218

Speaker Nancy Pelosi wasn't claiming victory just yet on health care reform legislation in the House on Thursday, but she told reporters at her weekly news conference that she will have the votes when the vote is called on Saturday.

"I say once again we are right on the brink of passing historic legislation," said Pelosi, who spoke inside the Capitol as tens of thousands of people were gathering outside to demand defeat for a health care reform bill.

Pelosi certainly could have had a great view of the protest, as her office looks right down the National Mall, right over the West Front of the Capitol, where the demonstration was happening.

But that certainly wasn't her focus, because right now the only thing that matters is getting to 218 votes, a majority in the House.

"Tuesday night we won two more votes for health care," Pelosi told reporters, sticking to her uber-positive review of a pair of elections for U.S. House seats in California and New York, both of which Democrats won, while ignoring the two losses in Governors races.

Yesterday she swore in the new Representative from the Golden State; today, Pelosi gets to give the oath to the new member from the Empire State, who will also be down at the White House for a chat with President Obama.

Those newcomers could be two votes the Democrats dearly need on Saturday.

It wasn't hard to tell who was on the fence still yesterday, as Blue Dog Democrats were getting surrounded by reporters in the hallways, trying to divine which way they might go on health reform.

Republicans meanwhile were going back and forth between despair and hope on the matter.

Despair was the feeling that there was no way Pelosi was going to lose this vote.

Hope was the thousands who turned out for the big anti-Pelosi-health-care rally might swing a vote or two.

We'll see what the House does this weekend. I won't be surprised if things get delayed and I'm at the Capitol watching the replay of the Saturday night football game well after midnight.

Stay tuned. There are no guarantees when it comes to controversial legislation like this.

What others are saying

  • The idea that they majority party has to scrap up votes for any bill, does not make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. They could all come together, and make a really good bill instead of being focused on being the 'ones' to pass a monumental bill. It won't be very monumental when it all falls to crap in a few years.
