Health Care Vote
Today (Friday) the action will be in the House Rules Committee, which will meet to set up the parameters of the debate - how many amendments, how much time, etc.
At this point, no amendments are expected to be made in order on the floor of the House, other than the Republican alternative, which we detailed in one of Thursday's blogs.
But that won't stop Republicans from trying to offer amendments, even though the Rules Committee didn't ask for any.
One of the members sending a half dozen amendments to the Rules panel was a GOP Doctor, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA).
"Throughout the health care debate, Democrats have continued to shut legitimate Republican ideas out of the discussion," fumed Gingrey, who was on the Rules Committee, back when the GOP had the majority in the House.
"I urge the Rules Committee to at least let my amendments come to the floor for a vote," said Gingrey.
The Rules Committee meets at 2pm EST on Friday, and will probably take a few hours to finally approve the framework for the Saturday debate - if - if everything is still all systems go.
We will get an idea in the Rules meeting if there are any last minute deals, because extra legislative text would have to be added to the health reform bill.
That could happen on abortion, as pro-life Democrats want to tighten bill language and prevent government money from paying for abortion services.
"Speaker Pelosi's Government-Run Health Plan Will Require A Monthly Abortion Premium," screamed a headline of a GOP press release on Thursday afternoon, trying to take advantage of the dispute.
Another last minute change could concern health coverage for illegal immigrants, as Hispanic Democrats are threatening to vote no if the language becomes too harsh in their opinion. We'll see what pops up.
After the Rules Committee approves the debate plan, then everyone will get ready for Saturday's debate.
Unless of course Democrats are short on votes, which would mean a lot of sitting around and waiting.
Check back through the weekend for my reports on this health care reform debate.
