House Passed Health

The full text of the health care bill approved by the U.S. House is now available on the internet from the Library of Congress web site, weighing in at 2,016 pages. Can you find it? It's not that easy to find the correct version.

A few months ago, I met a woman who worked at the Library of Congress, and she mentioned that she worked on their web site.

I had a hard time restraining myself, because I would like to go across the street to that building and knock some heads when it comes to the multiple steps involved in doing what should be something simple.

So, since several people have asked how they can download the bill, here is your list of instructions.

* Go to http://thomas.loc.gov

* Top center, you will see four bills highlighted in yellow. Click on H.R. 3962, which is the House bill that was just approved.

* On the next page, click on "Text of Legislation"

* Then you will see more data with "There are 2 versions of Bill Number H.R. 3962 for the 111th Congress." The first one is the bill as originally drawn up, so click on the second one:

"Affordable Health Care for America Act (Engrossed as Agreed to or Passed by House)[H.R.3962.EH]"

* Now you have reached a page of hyperlinks that will take you to each section of the bill. If you still want the entire bill, look for "GPO's PDF display" on the left if you want the PDF copy, or "Printer Friendly Display" on the upper right.

Now you ask, why can't I give you a standard link? That's because most of the links from the Library of Congress web site expire after a certain amount of time.

And just think, it only took four days to put that up on the web!

  • Big Thanks
I'd like to think it was my link begging you to find this for me but I'm sure you would have done it on your own. Keep up the amazing work. I find you to be my knight in shining armor when it comes to actually finding out what's going on in D.C.
  • Biofuels and HealthCare
Can anyone explain why Section 555 dealing with Biofuels is in the Affordable Healthcare for Americans Act?
  • Is Doug reading what I'm reading?
I think you do a great job of reporting the facts, and if anything are frustrated by the complexity of the bill and all its "pieces parts."
  • you and health care
It appears you are a big supporter of this massive pile of junk the House calls health care reform My God man just come out and say it
