One More Democrat

Not everything went the way of the GOP in Tuesday's elections, as a special election for a House district in New York turned into a victory for the Democrats, as they won a seat that's been in Republican hands for years.

So if health care reform gets through the House by one vote, then Republicans will have no one to blame but themselves and their intraparty battle royale in New York, which became a proxy fight in the War To Change The GOP.

After all the intrigue and political back and forth, Democrat Bill Owens won the seat over Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. That's right, the Democrat won.

The Republican had dropped out over the weekend, leaving the GOP without a candidate, so they just grabbed onto the Conservative Party hopeful, but evidently, the damage had already been done.

It's a seat that realistically should never have been in play, but because of the fight that had Sarah Palin and others endorsing the Conservative candidate, and then the GOP nominee endorsing the Democrat, the race got a lot of play.

So what does it tell us?

Well, the late House Speaker Tip O'Neill once said that "all politics are local," and that's probably very true for this seat.

In the last 12 Congressional elections, the Democratic candidate in this seat never got more than 38% of the vote.

And yet, there was the Democrat in the winner's circle on Tuesday night, exploiting the party squabbles of the GOP.

Is this loss the fault of Sarah Palin? The fallout should be interesting.

Let the finger pointing begin!

What others are saying

  • How big was the margin?
The "con"s lost by what margin?
  • .
While it would be amusing if some conservatives end up blaming Sarah Palin for Hoffman's loss, I don't think it's all that productive arguing whether this contest was a true bellwether for what will happen in next year's elections. Could this be the start of a trend where more conservative candidates become the obvious front-runners in elections? It might. If the people begin to voice their support for the candidate they want rather than what the party wants, I believe we're all better served that way.
  • Not a 100-year R seat
Sorry, Chip Shirley, the seat's only been Republican since 1993.
  • Con's lose 100yr R seat!

Too bad the mainstream media pay so little attention to rightwing hate-radio.
Not because I like it, but because it is dangerous and needs to be monitored.
If you listened to Limbaugh, Hannity, Boortz and Beck...you would know that they put all their chips in on the conservative in NY-23rd.
They pushed that race like it was the presidency and they brought in Sarah Palin, Fred Thompson and their country music hatemonger John Rich...
THEY WENT ALL IN AND THEY ...L O S T.....
They proved to the whole nation that they are totally out of touch.
The governors races truly were local and this race truly was national.
    Chins up Dem's!

  • Elections
This is the wake up call for the "Republican" Party. Stop supporting Moderates who are Democrats posing as consertatives. The "Republican" Party lost the way and now Sarah Palin is the carrying the beacon and leading the way. The "Republican" candidate was a liberal at heart and action. Wake up you "Republicans" the future is comming hard, very hard..
  • Oh Brother
Palin: STAY IN ALASKA!! and out of our lives.
  • NY congressional
Who's to say that the Republican nominee wouldn't have voted for health care anyway? But I do agree that it doesn't look good for the outside "interference". Also, there were enough Republicans jumping on the bandwagon after Palin stepped up that there's plenty of "blame" to go around.
  • another bellweather district outcome??
Jamie I caught the end of a report on cable news the other day about a big race in California house I THINK it was district 10, can you tell us more? Thanks.
