Jobs Bill Slows
It has been over six weeks since President Obama used his State of the Union Address to vow action on jobs and the economy. The Congress though is still dickering over the details of job creation plans.
First, the Senate suddenly changed course during the snows of February, as Democrats went with a barebones jobs bill. Last week, the House added its own changes and sent it back.
It was thought that the Senate would get right to that amended bill, but instead Democrats detoured to a Federal Aviation Administration measure yesterday, after final action on a package of tax breaks and extended jobless benefits for those out of work.
Maybe because of that uncertainty, Democrats treated the tax break/jobless benefits measure as a jobs type bill, emphasizing some of the business tax breaks that would be renewed in the bill.
"Jobs are priority number one for my administration, and I won't rest until every American who wants a good job has one," President Obama said in a written statement issued by the White House.
"This bill helps small businesses get the loans they need to grow and hire, provides tax relief that companies need to support new research and development jobs of the future, and extends relief to Americans looking for work," he added.
But this bill might not be moving too quickly either, as House Democrats don't like some of the details, so they are expected to ask for a House-Senate conference to work out the differences.
Looking at the calendar, there are only two work weeks left until Congress is scheduled to take an Easter Break, and much of that time may be devoted to health care legislation.
We'll see in the days ahead how much gets done. If Congress somehow does the health bill, the jobs bill and the jobless benefits package, that would be a big time Legislative Trifecta. I'm not sure it's really possible.
