Larry Munson's fame in the Peach State is almost as fabled as the renowned calls he has made as the play-by-play man for University of Georgia football for a remarkable run of 40 years. In Georgia Larry Munson is revered as one of the great icons. His voice on the radio is instantly recognizable. His impact on radio listeners is both mystical and mythical. Munson has breathlessly encouraged the Bulldog faithful to "Hunker down," has witnessed "Sugar falling from the sky," and has begged a wide receiver to "Run, Lindsay, run" as Georgia's national championship aspirations hung in the balance. Larry's famous calls can be repeated verbatim by tens of thousands of Bulldog fans around the state.
In August 2003 Larry Munson was recognized by the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana as the fifth-ever winner of the prestigious "Chris Schenkel Award" given annually to the announcer who has contributed a lifetime to broadcasting college sports and community service. Larry was inducted to the College Hall of Fame on the same weekend as Dan Marino, Ronnie Lott and ten other college football legends.
Larry Munson first came to Atlanta as one of the Atlanta Braves initial play-by-play men upon their move from Milwaukee in 1966. Munson served in that capacity for two seasons. Prior to taking over as the "Voice of the Dawgs" Larry Munson was the Vanderbilt University football and basketball play-by-play announcer for 16 years. For those keeping score at home, that makes it 54 consecutive autumns that Larry Munson has broadcast Southeastern Conference Football.
Until his retirement from every day sportscasting in 1998, in addition to his Georgia football play-by-play duties, Munson was been a regular sports talk show host in Atlanta for nearly 20 years.
Larry Munson's daily commentaries can still be heard weekday mornings on News/Talk 750 WSB as well as accessed at wsbradio.com.
While in Nashville from 1950 1975, Munson was an award-winning television announcer on the six and eleven o'clock news and host of weekend fishing and hunting programs.
However, it has been Munson's trademark pleading, anguished play-by-play calls of Georgia football games on News/Talk 750 WSB that propelled Larry into the Georgia Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1994.
On January 28, 1994 Larry Munson of News/Talk 750 WSB and the Georgia Bulldogs Radio Network was honored by then-Governor Zell Miller and the Georgia Senate in a ceremony at the State Capitol. In recognition of Larry's enduring legacy as the "Legendary Voice of the Dawgs" Governor Miller declared Tuesday, January 28 to be "Larry Munson Day" in the state of Georgia.
On September 23, 2008, Larry Munson announced his retirement .
