A Weekend Parade of Endorsements
Posted February 4, 2008

All I needed to do this past weekend to know who has the momentum in the GOP race for President was to keep an eye on my blackberry.

Every hour it seemed, there was another round of endorsements for John McCain. And it wasn't just from someone who had backed Rudy Giuliani until last week.

Instead, it was GOP establishment types signing up with McCain from a variety of states. There were Senators, members of the US House and more, while there were only a few coming in for Mitt Romney.

As I have said before, endorsements don't impress me all that much. But the pace of them in recent days show me that the GOP field is tilting towards McCain.

When GOP Senators start getting on board like Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, along with former GOP Senators like Don Nickles of Oklahoma, it shows me that some in the conservative power base have decided it is time to join up with and not fight the McCain candidacy by backing Mitt Romney.

It won't shock anyone in Washington, D.C. if there is a big showing for McCain on Tuesday. It really makes you realize how big that his win in the Florida primary was last week. Without it, it is much more of a dogfight on Super Tuesday.

"I sense a feeling of momentum but we're not taking anything for granted," McCain said this weekend.

Does Obama Have the Democratic Momentum?

A review of the weekend polls raises some pretty big red flags for the Hillary Clinton camp - if the polls are on the mark, which has been an issue in this campaign so far.

The biggest moves came in a Reuters/CSPAN/Zogby poll that showed Obama leading in California, up 20 points in Georgia and a tie in New Jersey and Missouri.

If that's the case, then maybe we are looking at a big day for Obama on Tuesday, as a surge has certainly been seen in national polls in recent days.

Then again, I can show you polls that have Clinton ahead in California, close in Georgia and leading in both in New Jersey and Missouri.

Obama had only one public event on Sunday in Wilmington, Delaware, but he brought in an estimted crowd of 20,000 people for a rally.

That is a huge number. That is not something to ignore.

Obama also had Oprah Winfrey out on the stump again on Sunday, as she and Caroline Kennedy rallied voters in Southern California.

Where Are the Candidates on Super Tuesday Eve?

I spent a lot of time in recent days on this geographic question for a reason, because it tells a lot about what's going on in the campaign.

We got to see all the candidates in both parties flood back to the East after their debates last week in California.

Oddly enough, four candidates will be in Massachusetts at some point today, as Clinton, Obama, McCain and Romney will spend time there.

Clinton is in Connecticut and Massachusetts, Obama will be in those two states along with New Jersey.

On the GOP side, McCain is in Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York, while Romney and Huckabee are in the South. Romney has events in Tennessee and Georgia; Huckabee is in Tennessee and Arkansas.

Huckabee has focused on Georgia, Arkansas and Tennessee in the past week, seeing those as his best chances to break through and get a Super Tuesday win.

Romney is certainly stronger than Huckabee in some Western states, but would dearly love to be facing McCain on his own in the South right now.

Romney did have some good news this weekend, as he won the Maine Caucuses, but he needs a lot more delegates tomorrow.

As for spouses, Bill Clinton is in Calfornia, while Janet Huckabee was in Alaska this weekend. There are caucuses there tomorrow as well.

And before the Ron Paul supporters fire off an angry email about the media ignoring their candidate, the Texas Congressman will be in North Dakota and Minnesota today.
