| What is WSB-AM? WSB-AM or News/Talk 750 WSB is Atlanta's news, weather, and traffic station. When did News/Talk 750 WSB begin broadcasting? News/Talk 750 WSB is the South's first radio station. We've been on the air since March 15, 1922 when a telegram from the Secretary of Commerce granted the station temporary permission weather bulletins. The station received its license to broadcast other programming later in 1922. Pittsburgh's KDKA is recognized as the nation's first radio station as it was the first radio station ever assigned call letters in 1920. Do the call letters, WSB, mean anything? WSB's call letters stand for the phrase, "Welcome South Brother." Is WSB owned by the Atlanta Newspapers? No - not anymore. The station began in 1922 as part of the Atlanta Journal Newspaper. Back then, the Atlanta Constitution was a competing newspaper with its own start-up radio station. News/Talk 750 WSB is owned by Cox Radio. Cox Radio is part of Cox Enterprises which owns among many other media properties the The Atlanta Journal/Constitution. What is the connection, if any, between WSB and NBC? In 1927, WSB became an NBC radio affiliate; in fact, the trademark three-tone NBC chimes were first played in the WSB studios. In 1939, the Journal newspaper and WSB radio station were sold to James M. Cox, former Governor of Ohio, Presidential candidate, and founder of what would become Cox Enterprises. Wright Bryan, a WSB news reporter as well as managing editor of the Atlanta Journal, was also a stringer for NBC during World War II. He was the first war correspondent to broadcast an eyewitness account of the D-Day invasion from London in the early hours of June 6, 1944. Where are the studios of News/Talk 750 WSB? The studios of News/Talk 750 WSB are located at 1601 West Peachtree Street, NE, in Atlanta. The station has broadcast from this location since 1956. From 1925 to 1956, WSB-AM, along with WSB-FM and WSB-TV, operated out of the top floor of the Atlanta Biltmore Hotel in lower Midtown. Afterward, the WSB stations broadcast from a Colonial-style mansion specially built for broadcasting, informally known as White Columns, also located in Midtown, where Peachtree Street crosses West Peachtree Street near Ansley Park. In 1998, all of the Cox radio stations and WSB-TV moved into "Digital White Columns" on the same property. Does WSB-AM broadcast play-by-play sports? News/Talk 750 WSB is the Atlanta flagship station for the University of Georgia Bulldog Radio Network, carrying all Georgia Football and Basketball games. Why can WSB-AM easily heard far away at night? WSB-AM is among the first 50 radio stations licensed by the government to broadcast at "full-power" 24/7. That means other radio stations at 750 on the dial must power down at night. When radio stations were first licensed, the signal had to be powerful enough to reach communities not served by a local radio station. This is also key in times of emergency. When Hurricane Hugo devastated the Carolinas in 1989, taking down radio station towers, WSB-AM could be heard in the community. When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, WSB-AM was one of the few stations that could be heard in the area. |
