Kendrie was diagnosed on October 13, 2003 with acute lymphatic leukemia (ALL). She was one month past her 4th birthday. She was diagnosed at Children's Hospital of Macon, and then transferred to Scottish Rite where she began treatment. Kendrie's chemo protocol was 26 months began in October 2003 and continued until December 2005. Sometimes we were at the clinic two or even three times a week, especially at the beginning of treatment. Then, the protocol called for fewer clinic visits (perhaps every two weeks, or once a month) but daily oral chemo at home. We were fortunate that Kendrie had very few problems throughout her treatment; only one unexpected hospital for fever and low counts. She lost her hair three times during treatment, but grew to love baseball caps! She is a HUGE tomboy and loves swimming, riding bikes and scooters, playing baseball, and spending time outdoors. She also started school while on treatment and completed her pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten year while on chemo.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff at Aflac! Although all the doctors and nurses are wonderful, we are especially fond of ours: Dr. John Bergsagel and his nurse Mary. Every since the day we met them, and they began caring for Kendrie, they have been kind, compassionate, thorough, and caring. We have been treated so very well, our concerns addressed, our questions answered, our fears listened to. I'm so thrilled for them that they have such a beautiful facility to work in everyone there, from the receptionists, to the triage nurses, to the schedulers, to the lab techs, to the social workers and child life specialists they all played a part in helping my daughter not only survive, but Thrive!
