Kylie was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer, on November 6, 2008 at which point she began receiving treatment at the Aflac Cancer Center. We began 14 rounds of treatment which included 2 days of staying in the hospital followed by 12 days at home and then another 5 days inpatient. Because the cancer was in her bones, on April 7th Kylie underwent a type of surgery called limb salvage. In the past, patients with this type of cancer would have to have all or part of their limb amputated, but due to this special surgery, we were able to save her leg. Kylies femur was removed and replaced with a titanium rod. As of right now, Kylie only has ONE treatment left. We could not be more thrilled. Kylie, or Princess Kylie as we call her, still has to do physical therapy to strengthen her leg. Because of her treatment, Kylie has to discontinue going to Pre-K last year, but she will start kindergarten this year. Our hope is that Kylie will be out of her wheelchair and will be able to WALK into her first day of kindergarten. Dr. Olson is our doctor and we love him. We also have the most amazing nurses in Kristi and Sarah! At first, Kylie had a hard time getting poked (her first blood draw of an appointment), but they have made it so much easier on us and she doesnt even really mind it anymore. We cannot say enough great things about the staff at the Aflac Cancer Center!! After Kylie finishes her last treatment, we will go back for scans every 3 months. Though that is a little nerve-racking, we are excited about this next step in our journey. The staff at the Aflac Cancer Center have become a part of our family and we cannot imagine not seeing them every week! advertisement
