CLARKONOMICS/RIP-OFF ALERT: Here's one story that warrants both a Clarkonomics and a Rip-Off Alert sounder...
All over the country, state governments are letting their citizens down as people who are unemployed are not able to get their compensation. The states are simply not adequately staffed to handle all the requests for jobless benefits they're receiving.
If your request for unemployment compensation has gone unnoticed, Clark suggests contacting your state legislator. They have staffers who do constituency work and may be able to help.
One side note: It is your right to receive unemployment compensation. It is not welfare and Clark wants be perfectly clear about that.
Meanwhile, the number of women in the workforce is about to surpass the number of men. A couple of years ago, women's participation in the workforce was declining in substantial numbers. How quickly times have changed
The New York Times reports the reason for the reversal is that many women work in health care and education -- sectors of the economy that are a bit more recession-proof than traditionally male-dominated careers.
So this latest trend means that many women will become the sole breadwinners in their families for the foreseeable future. That could be a challenge for families as they try to make due with women's pay that has traditionally trailed what men earn.

What others are saying
- Unemployment HearingIf you are denied unemployment compensation, always apply for reconsideration hearing. THe way the laws & regulations are set is that your former employer has to prove that you are not entitled to unemployment compensation. The laws & regulations are set in favor of the employee not the employer. You do not need a lawyer in most cases. However, the threat of getting one will have many employers back down from attenpting to deny your unemployment claim.
As for those employers who want to deny a claim since their unemployment insurance rates will increase, take this also to a hearing. The employer will be shown the door so quickly and you will be paid your unemployment. Remember, you do not owe your former employer anything if they laid you off. Just keep looking for another position. - UnemploymentUnemployment may be our "right ro receive", but my employer simply said NO to it because it would raise his unemployment insurance costs, and he let me go for lack of funds to pay me, but he didn't have to pay me unemployment either as apparently it's his "right" also to not have to pay it.
- unemployment comp.Clark states "One side note: It is your right to receive unemployment compensation. It is not welfare and Clark wants be perfectly clear about that."
Agreed, it is not welfare but there has been a huge amount of abuse - people working six months to qualify then getting six months of unemployment pay.
I am very sympathetic to those who find themselves unemployed. Please understand this. The fraud that occurs is what bothers me A LOT. - Unemployment CompensationSome laid off workers are being denied unemployment benefits because their employers are saying the lay offs occurred for reasons other than economic slowdowns. As a smokescreen, they are saying employees were let go for reasons of cause.
- Women in the WorkplaceMy first thought when I heard that women are now about to surpass men in the workplace was "well, that's because women make less than men so now that companies are laying off and cutting back, the higher paid men are probaly the first to go".
- UnemploymentIf you have your correct information when you report to the local unemployment office to file your claim the process is allot smother. (ie. addresses, dates, empl authorization documents, etc.)
