(WSB Radio) -- It was a little restaurant with a big following.

A fire early Monday morning heavily damaged the Havana Sandwich Shop, and its owner tells WSB she may not reopen.

The restaurant had served up Cuban sandwiches at 2905 Buford Hwy., near the intersection with North Druid Hills, for more than 30 years.

But owner Debbie Benedit tells WSB's Jon Lewis that vandalism over the past year has her considering closing the shop.

The restaurant has often been recognized by the national restaurant guide Zagat as being the "Top Cuban Restaurant in Atlanta."

Benedit, her late husband, Eddie, and his father and brothers opened the sandwich shop in 1976. The Benedits came to the United States from Cuba in the early 1960s.

No injuries were reported. Fire officials have not said what caused the blaze.

  • Please reopen!
The Havana Sandwich shop is one of my favorite lunch places. I'm so sorry the fire occurred. Please consider the opportunity to rebuild. The community will reward you with their business once you reopen! I'm sure enjoyed my Cuban Sandwich I had last Friday. I hope it will not be the last from Havana Sandwich Shop.
  • Please reopen
Please reopen. If not there, somewhere in Brookhaven/North ruid Hills Area. You could be in the same general area but safer & with some parking! If you decide not to reopen...it will be a big loss but thanks for 25 years of the best black beans & rice anywhere!

  • Sad
I am very good friends with the Benedit family and worked for Debbie's brother for a number of years. I ate there every day. Such a shame. The family has suffered a lot of turmoil in the past several years. This is just the icing on the cake. My prayers go out to the family.
