Bartow County "Hero" on Trial
(WSB Radio) Prosecutors say motorcyclist Antonio Hall drove at a dangerous and excessive speed as he tried to evade the state troopers who were chasing him.
But prosecutors also say that didn't give Bartow County recreation supervisor Jeff Brooks the right to steer his county truck into Hall's path, causing the collision that killed Hall.
"He is not a law enforcement officer," prosecutor Mickey Thacker told the court. "There was no need for him to be involved in this pursuit."
Hall was being chased by Georgia State Patrol on Georgia Spur 20 last year.
Police say Hall was on his motorcycle coming around a curve at a high rate of speed. Brooks was at an intersection in his country truck. Police said Brooks came out into traffic, there was a violent collision and Hall died.
Investigators say Brooks intentionally tried to stop Hall, but Brooks denies that.
County officials say Brooks is not to blame for Hall's death. They say that, if Brooks had not been fleeing police, he'd be alive today.
What others are saying
- my nephew killedTo all of you cold hearted people with no heart this was my nephew and if this Brooks man had not intervened he may very well still be alive and raising his child and here with his living family and for all your heartless people that called him name in your comments he was a human being if u are not the poloce mind your business or go to school and be mandated the real way this is not T.V.
- Are you serious???So, the next time I find someone speeding - how about I pull out a gun and shoot them??? You can not seriously excuse what this man did by taking justice in his own hands and thereby, ending a young life. That is ridiculous!!!
- Police ChaseEveryone should help stop crime and catch law breakers. The government can not so all things and we have a responsibility to help. Brooks is dead because he made a bad choice.
- Bartow "Hero" On TrialJeff Brooks was not (as stated in the last line of the last Pragraph) "fleeing police". It was Antonio Hall who was fleeing.
- Prosecutor is an idiot!!Perhaps the prosecutor in this case should, instead, thank this gentleman who stopped a potential fatality involving INNOCENT people. I say good riddance to the criminal who died.
- Waste of Tax Money (again)Put me on the Jury. I'd never make it because I'd call them fools. If the guy had a blue light and uniform ok there is an issue. But given the perfect opportunity I'd pull out as well. Enough to make the dirtbag dump the bike into a big oak tree. I wonder if that school bus down the road or family of five coming back from dinner knew what would (or could) have hit them. More pursuit terminations like this will end such crazy fools - maybe the courts should spend time locking away fools like this that happen to get caught still living.
- JusticeIf the moron did not run and jeopardize other people's safety he would still be alive. Case closed.
