State Outsources IT Work
(WSB Radio) The State of Georgia is adding nearly 100 employees to its jobless rolls as its contracts out its Information Technology operations.
Gov. Perdue announced AT&T and IBM were the sole bidders on two separate contracts worth $346 million and $873 million respectively.
"Providing technology services is not a core competency of state government... we've tried and its not one of the things that we do best," he says.
He cites crashing servers as well as leaky roofs and rodents in the office building that houses the state's primary data system.
"I was frightened because I could not guarantee Georgia citizens that their data was secure or that we were spending our I.T. dollars in the best way possible," says Perdue.
He says unfortunately 92 employees of the state's Technology Authority are affected and at the most inopportune time.
"We certainly didn't plan on this kind of timing and in fact I'd love for unemployment to be under four percent as it has been sometimes in the past," he says.
Unemployment for the state reached seven percent for the month of October, the highest in more than 16 years.
Some of the employees have received jobs with AT&T and others will be helped through a career services center and upcoming job fair.
They will be employed until the new operations begin May 1st.
What others are saying
- LayoffsGood luck to all of us. IT is an easy target with it's high salaries and infrastructure costs and believing that will go down with outsourcing is silly. What you gain in temporary fiscal gains, you lose in expertise and historical knowledge. Wait until the bill comes in to bring IT back in house.
- Facing reality.Anyone who thinks that outsourcing IT functions will either save money or result in improved service is in for some unpleasant surprises.
The state's problems in IT and other areas of expertise are due to the state's longstanding hiring practices, which have little to do with the candidates' qualifications and everything to do with their connections.
jj - That's about half the story . . .there are also a dozen other departments (e.g. DHR, DNR, DJJ, GDC)losing staff under the GAIT 2010 project. State employees have been offered jobs, at least one year, with either IBM, Dell or Xerox . . . but hundreds of current contractors have heard nothing about their future. So, than 100 number could grow dramatically by April 1st.
Yup, the joke will be on them! - OutsourceLet's outsource Sonny and see how much we can save.
- GA OutsourcingHaving worked for a major "outsourcer", if the state didn't transfer the 100 GA employees to IBM/AT&T as part of the transition, then they did not do a creditable job of negotiating.
- OutsourcingThe state is outsourcing the IT contract with the state government..Productivity should go up dramatically! How bout looking at other functions of government to outsource..this should just be the beginning!!!
