(WSB Radio)  Gwinnett County residents could be paying if they don't recycle.

The county's new solid waste ordinance carries a $500 fine for residents who toss recyclables in with the ordinary trash.

The county is trying to comply with the state police that asks local governments to cut solid waste in landfills by 25 percent.

Cities and counties that meet that goal get priority in applying for new landfill permits.

The new Gwinnett County recycling program is set to begin in July.

What others are saying

  • Recycling Program
Recycling is a scam...a religion that most of us are indoctrinated into at a young age. In most cases, recycling is an inefficient process that requires tremendous government funded expense. And landfills get a terrible rap, when in fact they are an exellent source of methane, which is actually harvested from many landfills and used to power entire communities. The Gwinnett County government should stop policing our trash and tampering with the free market by telling us what garbage company to hire. Instead spend that money and energy on looking up more efficient and beneficial solutions for dealing with waste.
  • Gwinnett recycling program
I think the recycling program imposed on the citizens of Gwinnett is arrogant. $500 for a violation? When did we vote on this? Government arrogance!
  • Recycling??
Why are the residents being fined when the largest school system in the state, Gwinnett County Public schools does not recycle??
The schools contribute a whole lot more to the land fills than an average resident.
Go after the largest offenders first!!!
  • Recycling??
Why did Gwinnett public schools, the largest school system in the state STOP their recycling program?
If the residents are being fined what about the school systems?
A family does not amass nearly as much trash in 1 week as the schools amass per day.
  • Recycle Bins
Why do I have a giant 50 gallon trash can and a teeny-tiny recycle bin? Shouldn't I have a giant recycle bin and a teeny-tiny trash can?
  • recycline delimma
Oh ye - let's start charging even more for garbage pickup at a time when folks have less and less and are taxed more and more. This is nothing more than justification to bleed even more money and dress it up in the recycling farce. How long before we start seeing garbage bags just thrown out in every vacant lot and ditch in the county? I believe we need to reduce our landfill output like everyone else but if you price it out of reach - you just create a bigger problem.
  • Recycling Delimma
I have an idea to fix our state's recycling problem. It goes like this:

Provide curbside pickup for recyclables. Give customers 2 bins, a blue one, and a green one. Have them put newspapers, magazines, junkmail, phonebooks in the blue one, and aluminum, glass, and plastic in the green one.
Next, put no limit on the amount of separated recyclables, but allow only 10-20 pounds a week for "trashcan" stuff.
For every pound that a resident exceeds his poundage limit, add $5.00 to his garbage bill.
Everyone benefits from this: The recyclables get sold off, and we minize what gets placed into our landfills. Those too stubborn to recycle get to subsidise the garbage bills of those who agree that recycling is important.

  • What???
Why is the state police asking local governments to cut waste by 25%????

It's about time! I recycle everything item I can and when they stack up it opens your eyes as to what's going into the landfills and I'm just one person. I even tried to get my gym to recycle plastic water bottles but they say sorry. Maybe now they will have to. I also think that a bottle and can deposit for the state of Georgia would help with the roadside junk. Michigan has had one for years and it works. GM

Interesting. This has not been mentioned at Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful that I know of. I can't image why they wouldn't want anyone to know about this.
