Kavanagh is survived by his wife Grace, his daughter Melissa, and his granddaughter Kelsey. He also leaves to mourn his 94-year-old mother, Catherine Kavanagh, his brother Roger Kavanagh, and sister Eileen Cooke and everyone his News/Talk 750 WSB family.

"Everything Mike did was top notch," said Scott Slade, host of Atlanta's Morning News. "He had no peer."

Captain Herb Emory, WSB's lead traffic reporter said," No one served the listener better than Mike Kavanagh."

Kavanagh was a veteran of two worlds - broadcasting and financial planning. In 2007, he celebrated 40 years in radio and TV work. Since 1987 he divided his life between broadcasting and financial planning.

Before moving exclusively two years ago into his role as host of Money Matters, one of the longest running financial advice radio shows in the country, Kavanagh spent 15 years as co-anchor with Lisa Campbell of Atlanta's Evening News on News/Talk 750 WSB. Money Matters made its debut on WSB in 1990.

Said Campbell, "Mike was an incredible talent, a good human-doing, my longtime co-anchor, but most of all, my dear, dear friend. I will miss sharing our stories, and hearing about how much he loved Grace. There will never be another Kavanagh."

Since 1994, Kavanagh had been a senior partner in the financial firm Capital Investment Advisors, Inc. in Atlanta, GA where he was a fee only CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER.

His long career included work in Washington D.C. and New York as well as Atlanta. In addition to local radio and TV, Mike worked in the early days of CNN both as a radio anchor for daily business news and as a TV anchor for CNN Headline News.

Kavanagh won numerous awards, including the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for the investigative report, "Ripped off in the Name of God" a series which exposed multi-million dollar investment scams. He also worked as part of the team backing up noted consumer advocate Clark Howard.

"He cared about every last person he dealt with about what would happened to them financially," said Clark. "Especially in this last year, he would shepherd his clients through the crisis. After a while that can begin to wear on you."

Kavanagh was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, but his heart belonged to the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

"Every Friday afternoon, when Mike was anchoring, he'd play the fight song in the newsroom to get everyone ready for the weekend," said Condace Pressley, Kavanagh's friend and colleague. "There is a huge hole in all of our hearts today."

Not only was Kavanagh passionate about news, your money, and Notre Dame, he was also passionate about radio. He was one of the founding members of the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. He also created and managed a website about the radio station History of WSB Radio.

Mike's mission was to convince consumers that investing is not difficult, that fear and greed will combine to be the worst enemies of your financial plan and the main goal of all financial planning is to create your own person "SWAN" plan -- which stood for "Sleep Well at Night".

In tribute to Mike Kavanagh Sunday, WSB rebroadcast the November 23rd show with Santa Claus. [LISTEN: Part 1 | Part 2] Mike's message that day was a challenge to all of us to live with an "attitude of gratitude." Pictured with Mike and Santa are associate producers Clark Barrow and Crystal Wheeler, and engineer Matt Fields.

  • A friend and a tutor
I regularly listened to mike. I moved here from Ethiopia and his genuine advice was of great help for me to learn how money works in America. I
loved listening to his distinct voice and great humor on the radio. I learned about his death when I turned the radio looking for his usual and kind advice. He will be missed by me and many others. May you rest in peace till we see you again in time of resurection according to John 5:25-30. All my best wishes to all his family and friends.
I surely will miss you mike!!
  • Mike Kavanagh
I find myself quite upset at the reality that you are no longer part of our lives here on earth. I attended a couple of seminars you held and always came away with some solid sound financial advice. I listened to you on Sundays and really enjoyed the show. I will always remember the way you donated so much of your time and energy to make other peoples lives better. You are and were a gem. The year 2008 is ending on a very sad note here in the Atlanta area. GOD bless you Mike and may your family some how know that you are looking out for them from up above. You have earned your wings.

  • mike kavanaugh
I was sadden to hear of mike's transition. He gave wonderful financial advice.
  • Mike-my dear friend
Mike, yes it is a wonderful day to be alive, but the days are much less wonderful now that you are not here to enjoy them with us.
Through tears of sadness come my tears of joy knowing I had the honor and pleasure of calling you my friend-even though in my, and especially in Pete's heart you felt like family. Our hearts ache for your wonderful family, especially for your lovely Grace and precious Kelsey...to see how your eyes would shine and sparkle when you spoke of them is a special memory.
You were a true gentleman, genuine, kind and true to all...your family, friends, colleagues, aquaintances. To all, the 2 legged and 4!
You recently told us that in 20yrs you wanted to be able to look back and say that we were able to do some good for our world, well Kavanagh, it seems like you were already able to make that thought come true. Please rest knowing that Pete & I will do our best to keep that thought ongoing.
You were our calm in the rough seas, and even today I asked "well, what would Mike say?" That is something that I will continue to ask, knowing that you will still be here for us.
Keep playing the music you love.
Sleep Well my friend, Sleep Well.
    Love,
    Cindy & Lucky
  • Excellent advice
I knew Mike by his signature voice and the excellent advice that he'd give during the off times that I would catch his program on WSB radio. His information was so concise and authoritative. God's blessings on his family.
  • mike
Every year I would make a resolution to make an appointment with Capital Investments to get ther advice. I hoped that I would meet Mike when I was there.

I never got around to fulfill my resolution and now I can't hope to see Mike.

We never met but I will miss him on Sunday mornings and now use that time to say a prayer for him and his family.
  • Mike was a kind spirit.
I was heart broken to hear of the loss of such a great man. He had such class & character. He befriended everyone he touched, including myself and my wife.

I had the good fotune to sit across from him at Capital Investments getting financial advice on both my personal finances and on my start-up business. Mike was invaluable.
My wife & I also took Melissa, his daughter & another friend of ours to see the band "Boston" in concert at Chastain Park. Mike always spoke very fondly of Melissa, like any dad would of his daughter.
The world was a better place because Mike Kavanaugh was in it. He will be missed.
  • Sorrow for the loss of a wonderful man
My daughter and I listened to Mike Kavanagh on the way to church on Sunday mornings and will always remember his soothing beautiful voice. We learned much from his financial genius and will miss him. Our thoughts are with his family and we pray that they will be lifted up with strength and courage to get through this difficult time and we know they will because we have experience a very similar tragedy since my husband passed away suddenly 3 years ago when he was age 59 and my daughter was 19. God bless you and give you peace and comfort that transcends all understanding. Cheryl S.
  • DONATIONS!
I encourage everyone do donate to the charaties FODAC -Friends of Disabled Adults and Children Clark Howard's Christmas Kids-DHR Secret Santa Program c/o News/Talk 750 WSB, both very worthy causes that Mike and his family supported. Thanks so much. Our heart goes out to you.
  • Mike
Absolutely top shelf. Mike was loved by all and will be sorely missed. I will pray throughout the day for Mike, his family and his friends.
  • Who didn't like Mike
I loved to listen to Mike Kavanagh. I never met him, but I could tell from his voice that he loved what he was doing and that he cared about other people. I will miss him!
  • Loss of a friend
Thank you Grace for sharing Mike with us. Even though I never met him, I considered him a dear friend. Each Sunday morning as we got ready for Church, I would listen and learn. Many times his advise was sprinkled with spiritual nuggets and I always knew he looked to the Lord for his best advise. I miss him very much but nothing to compare to your loss. My God bless you and your family with comfort.
  • One in a Million
As we go through life we meet thousands of people. But we only meet a handful or less that stand head and shoulders over us all. Big Mike was one of them. It is my honor to have met one of the greats. I will cherish his memory as one of the most caring ethical human beings on this planet.
  • A Standard-Bearer for Radio Broadcasters
Those of us who grew up listening to radio and especially WSB found a nice friend on 750 every time we heard Mike. Even before he created www.wsbhistory.com, you could just sense that Mike understood WSB is more than just a radio station to those of us who chose broadcasting as our profession. He epitomizes what a radio newscaster and communicator is all about. Even more satisfying to someone who never had the pleasure of meeting him is person... is to know he was also a great person away from the mic. In the future when I have a memory of The Voice of the South, I will hear in my mind..the voice of Mike Kavanagh.
  • Mike Kavanagh
I'm still trying to comprehend that this is real. I cannot imagine not hearing that voice again. I was the technical engineer and screener for Money Matters in the 90's for almost 4 years. Sunday's will never be the same. How can we ever hear Money by the Beatles or Pink Floyd and not think of Money Matters? My thoughts and prayers are with Grace, Kelsey and Melissa as well as his Mom and siblings.

Capital Investments & WSB radio will forever feel the loss of such an amazing man. His integrity will be remembered forever. His giving heart, he was always giving to someone somewhere in some way. His heart just gave out.

If there is a radio station in heaven....imagine Mike, Elmo and Aubrey....that's a show I would love to hear.

Mike, you have forever impacted my life in so many positive ways. I will never forget you and the lessons learned. Thank you!
  • Mike Kavanagh
I was truly shocked and saddened to learn when I tuned in to listen to Mike's radio show last Sunday that he had passed away the day before. Sundays will not be the same without him.

How sad that he died on his birthday and before breakfast with Santa this year and before Christmas, his favorite holiday. It is also very sad that he predeceased his Mother.

My sincere condolences to the Kavanagh family.

  • What a Man!!
Several weeks ago, I was honored to sit for a couple of hours with Mike who treated me like I was a personal friend or relative and he wanted to make sure I was OK. I was even late for my appointment that day due to a "chicken truck" accident on 285. I was frantic as I thought that a man like that wouldn't wait for a country girl who was late for an appontment in the city. When I did arrive, he just laughed that beautiful laugh and helped me to feel completely at ease and confident in my future. The really beautiful thing that happened that day was that Mike told me that I needed to change locations of some of my funds; that I was too near to retirement to be in risky business. I did what he told me to do and the next day the stock market started its slide; I sit here today safe in a "fixed" account while others around me are suffering. All of that wonderful advice and not one penny did it cost me. I never met anyone I felt more comfortable around and I feel like I have lost a good friend. I will miss Sunday mornings; I often was a little late to Sunday School as I drove very, very slowly so that he could calm my every financial fear. I am in tears now as I have been most of this week. What a Loss!!! God bless his family.
  • Condolences
I send the people at WSB and Mike's family my heartfelt condolences. Tragic. From all accounts he was one of those very rare, very special people.
  • What a Great Guy
I was priviledged to work with Mike for many years until I left in 1998. He was always cheerful, and always ready to help others with financial questions. He gave me a lot a good advise. I will miss hearing his cheerful voice on my way home from church on Sundays. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
  • Class Act Mike
Worked with Mike in the early 90's as his producer. Nicest man I ever met. Total pro, at the top of his profession.
Mike knew I loved sports so one day he ask me if I would like to do the sports on the Sunday morning news. That was Mike, always thinking of someone else.
Lost him way too soon. Atlanta radio will never be the same.
  • Mike's Passing
I enjoyed listening to Mike's show. He had a great radio voice and a great laugh. I am shocked to learn of is passing. My thoughts go to his family and his coworkers at this difficult time. He will be hard to replace.
  • I apologize
for my dunderheaded misspelling of Mr. Kavanagh's name. It does not change my
    sentiments.
  • Great loss
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mr. Cavanaugh's passing. I was a listener and I always enjoyed listening to his down to earth assessments of the financial world. His was an engaging personality that will be missed in the world of broadcasting. My condolences to his family and friends.
  • An inspiration to us all...
Like many on this page, I also worked with Mike at the RKO Radio networks. He was a truly great guy... personable, professional, caring and considerate. After he moved to Atlanta we kept in touch and he put his professional touch on some bogus annuities I'd been sold, saving my bacon, yet refusing compensation. I will miss him and keep him in my prayers.
  • Mike
My wife dearly loved to listen to this man. She got me started and a kinder person I don't think you could come across. His work with FODAC was amazing. I am sure his time was limited. We went to his office one day to talk with him about investing. Just a plain, simple building. I told my wife, this is what I would expect. Went to a couple of his seminars. Same thing there. Just simple and too the point. We will miss you Mike.
  • Losing Mike
I Met Mike When he Was A Reporter For WSB.A Fine Man And very Dedicated To His Work.I Am A Better person For Have knowing Mike,My Prayers Go Out To His Family And Loyal Listeners,
  • Mike will be missed a lot
We met Mike who was giving of himself with humor, insight, and sound financial advice. He was a fine gentleman and he will be missed. Since sympathy to his wife and daughter, and especially to Kelsey. You are in our prayers.
  • Mike Kavanagh
I was in college and working as a desk assistant at RKO when Mike was anchoring there. He always had time for those of us just starting out in the biz. I remember he lived in Westchester, and sometimes we'd share the ride home on the Metro-North train. A class act all around.
  • Missing a friend...
Mike's calming voice in a turbulent time cannot be replaced. He has been an audible friend to me for many years as I spend a lot of time in my car. Rest in peace my friend, you will be missed.
  • Money Matters show
I became a family member of Mike's Money Matters show every Sunday, it became a ritual the last four years and his words and sentences have helped me tremendously. I've experienced many emotions that Sunday with a void that can't be filled.
  • Mike Kavghana
I have listened to Mike for years, he has made me financially savvy. I met with him every year to go through our finances, he spent all the time needed without charging me a dime, I had asked him on several occasions if he would manage my account, but he always gave me the confidence that I could do it on my own. I cannot believe it he is gone - I will miss him dearly, Sunday mornings will never be the same. My condolences to his family.
  • Will be sorely missed.......
I have listened to Mike for the last 10 years I've been in Atlanta and always learned something new each Sunday. His voice was so comforting and often kept me company on my weekend walks. Our loss is heavens gain....
  • Mike Kavanagh
God bless Mike and his family. Financial advice always sound and very much appreciated. Mike will be missed!
  • You'll be missed
Sundays won't be same without Mike. I will really miss hearing him on the radio. I wonder if it was worries about the financial markets and the economy in general that may have contributed to his death?
  • Mike Kavanagh
Was a great person. I learned so much from listening to his show. My condolences to his family. He was a great person!!!
  • Missing Mike
Every Sunday morning after Church, my husband and I faithfully put on Mike's radio show. We loved it - and his big booming voice! We learned so much from him. He is irreplacible. His death comes as a great shock.

I met him personally in his office and he was so helpful, plus I attended several of his seminars. He wanted us all to be financially secure and gave so much of himself to that end.

My sincere condolences to his wife, daughter, granddaughter, and entire family. He, and they, are in my prayers.

  • I worked with Mike
I was a writer at CNN Headline News when he anchored there. With the voice he had, he was perfect for radio news.

    Only 57 -- how sad.
  • a normal guy
I listen to wsb all the time. One sunday ,listening to Mike's show,I called the station. They took my name and he called me back. He asked a few questions about my finances and tried to direct me as best he could. He spoke of his mom and how he had directed her to financial freedom. I still remember what he told me and I will take his advice. My prayers are with his family and his mom.God bless them.
  • To remember him
He is the best I ever met. I always remember his voice even those I never met him before.when I met him I enjoy talking to him as well as his thought. He will be in my heart .
  • Mike Kavanaugh
I'm just a guy who listens to WSB-750 driving to work every day. I always looked forward to Mike's short pieces during the morning drive and his interaction with Scott Slade. Especially during the past year's growing financial crisis, I drew comfort and confidence from Mike's serious, yet positive outlook for our nation. He was a calm port in the gale blwoing all around.
  • MIKE KAVANAGH
THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, I DON'T KNOW WERE I WOULD BE TODAY IF NOT FOR HIS FINANCIAL ADVISE THROUGH THE YEARS. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH THE FAMILY. GOD BLESS
  • Mike Kavanagh
I was privileged to work with Mike at the former RKO Radio Networks in the early 80's. Everything about him was first class. A superb writer; smooth delivery; and just a pure pleasure to be around. Mike and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
  • Sundays won't be the same
I never had the privaledge of meeting Mike. But he has always seemed to be a calming voice in my life. Whether it was listening to Atlant's Evening News or starting my Sunday off on a good note before heading to work. You could hear what a pleasant person he was and a calming effect his voice produced. I know no better way to honor his passing than to adopt his catch phrase "attitude of grattitude." I never focussed on that until yesterday. But I will carry that idea with me throughout the rest of my life from this day forward. My condolences to his family and all of you at the station that loved his so dearly. My prayers will be with all of you.
  • Mike
A sad aloha to a great broadcaster in every sense of the word. Smart, dedicated, great pipes, and the ability to look to the future with respect to the past. It was a gift to know you, and I could never thank you enough for all the free advice. Aloha my friend
  • Mike
Mike Kavanaugh may never know how he got me home safely through many Sunday morning drives from Atlanta to Douglasville. Money Matters was so interesting and Mike had such a captivating voice that I was able to stay awake after a long night shift and learn investment tips as well. So many people will miss Mike. Heaven just got even better!
  • Mike Kavanaugh
Long ago, I had the distinction of being the guy who got Mike Kavanaugh out of Springfield, Massachussetts.

Mike was always a beautiful human being. He was our newsman at WHYN, "The Big 56" (back when AM rockers had "news departments"). Mike's dynamic delivery was always the reality check, so to speak, in my rather silly jock shift, and we came to be buddies.

He would grouse, from time to time, about how he wanted to "do more", but he honestly had no clue how to go about looking for something bigger or better (I could never figure out how he'd managed to secure that job!). I explained to him that getting a great aircheck together was the only way to go, and since our airchecking facilities were somewhat ad-hoc, he'd best be served by faking a PERFECT one in the production studios of WHYN. As Mike had few production skills at the time, I offered to put one together for him. And we did a beauty, together.

Mike found an ad for a morning newsman/sidekick in Richmond, VA, with the late Jim King at the late WLEE (AM). He got the gig, and this is where he was able to develop an on-air "personality", as opposed to being a cold news reader. WLEE started him on the journey that led him to all his newstalk ventures.

I had the pleasure of reuniting, via e-mail, with Mike a few years back. We spoke a few times on the phone, too, and although I had caught him on CNN some years previously and jumped for joy that he had "made it" (incidentally, alongside the man who had trained me on the board in my first DJ gig, Chuck Roberts!), until we spoke I'd had no idea of all that Mike had accomplished since his big move to Atlanta.

Mike was a prince, and a brilliant guy as well. Despite the time and distance that separated us, I'm feeling the loss quite personally. My best thoughts go out to his family and all who were so privileged to know him.

I was privileged to have work with Mike during his first tour of duty in the WSB Radio news room in the mid 1970's. Always a class act, always a gentleman.
Wanting a 'major market' sound not long after I bought the radio stations in
tiny Clayton, Georgia in 1996...I asked Mike if he would kindly record some
top of the hour station IDs for me. Well, of course he did so, and my
little radio stations sounded superb...once an hour, at least! Mike
wouldn't accept my offer of what would have to be a modest talent fee, he
was just happy to do it for an old friend. Mike was one of those folks who
came to mind when you needed a little help...and you couldn't imagine him
saying anything other than 'Sure...what can I do for you?' Mike Kavanagh is
on the minds of many people today who wish they were more like him. Myself
    included. gordonvanmol@aol.com
  • Mike
It's taken me awhile to write this because finding the right words seemed impossible. But I'll try.

Mike Kavanagh was, without doubt, one of the finest men I've ever known, professionally and personally.

When I began at WSB, I anchored Thursday night news. Due to circumstances, one night I had to bring my twin sons to work with me. Mike happened to be there. When it came time for me to do my 8pm news, Mike volunteered to keep an eye on my 6 year olds. 10 minutes later, as I emerged from the news booth, there was Mike, teaching my boys the Notre Dame fight song, which they sang, non-stop, for the next 3 weeks. When my sons saw Mike again about a month later, they immediately sang "Cheer Cheer for Old Notre Dame," prompting this unroarious laugh from Mike. That is my favorite memory of the man. From now on, as long as I continue to work at WSB, I will always be aware of the presence of an absence. We are all lesser for his loss.

We in the radio business come across many extraordinary talents and unique personalities. In Mike Kavanagh, I got to know, and call my friend, a sterling individual.

I am honored to have known him and thank him for the privilege.
  • Farewell, friend.
It's strange that we can grow so attached to someone that we've never met. My wife and I listened to and enjoyed Mike's show and uplifting voice. Even though we never even spoke to him, we both feel as though we've lost a friend. Thank you, and God Bless.
  • Mike will be missed but always remembered
I had the pleasure of meeting Mike at one of our sales meetings at WSB. He was such a wonderful person to work with. He had SUCH a big heart and cared more about helping others than making money. I know God blessed him for his serving heart and I will miss working with him.
  • My Condolences
I was shocked to know about Mike's passing. Mike was the most honest person I have ever met. God needs good people like Mike as much as we needed him. God bless his family and give them strenth to bear this terrible news.
  • My Condolences
As a faithful WSB listener for the last 10 years, I can truly say this world has lost a great man with the passing of Mike Kavanagh.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mike's family and the WSB family as well.
  • Missing Mike
Mike was not only a great radio colleague but a friend as well. When I worked for Cox Radio I would often corner Mike and we would discuss the day’s events as well as a subject that both of us enjoyed … finances. I learned much from Mike and will always remember his warm personality, positive outlook and great sense of humor. We’ll all miss you Mike. My thoughts and prayers are with Mike’s family.
  • THE VOICE LIKE AN ANGEL
Me and My husband meet Mike at a Seminar called "Managing Your Money" several years ago and were very impressed that he listened and directed us in ways to place our Mother's money, they both had just sold their homes.
We enjoyed listening to Mike on Sunday mornings also.
We will always remember the voice like an Angel, Mr. Mike Kavanagh.

Sympathy goes out to his family.
  • Sincerest Condolences
In reviewing many of these heartfelt comments, it is clear that my experiences with Mike were far from unique, and I hope that when the shock clears that someone from his family will take the time to review and copy these tokens of affection for Mike.

Several years ago, after taking over my parent's affairs as they became elderly, I started learning about finances and investing. I decided to contact Mike and make an appointment to review my situation. I can say that it is truly a pleasant surprise to witness that the person you think you "know" from listening to the radio is exactly the same in person and not simply an on-air personna. Mike met with me on two occasions and refused to take me on as a client since he believed I was sufficiently well-versed to handle my own affairs. I do not know of many people who would be so honest and reassuring. I offered to pay for his time (especially after the second meeting) and he refused and even offered to answer any questions I might have by email. When I *tried* to insist upon some form of payment, he asked that I donate to his favorite charity, FODAC, and I complied.

I am stunned and saddened by his untimely demise and will miss him as others have stated.

    Condolences to the family.

  • my prayers are with Mike's family
Mike has been a regular part of Sunday morning routine listening to Mike before church. I will truly miss hearing his voice on the radio. He was definitely one of the best parts of WSB. We are praying for the family and trust that God will comfort you during this time.
  • Mike K.
My Sunday mornings will be emptier because of his abscence. My heartfelt prayers go to his family & friends.
  • and boy could he sing......
When my husband Alan, who works for WSB and loves Mike, had his 40th birthday, some of the guys helped me decorate the radio booth for Alan before he got to work that day. When Mike found out it was Alan's birthday, he came into the booth and belted out a stunning version of Happy Birthday that absolutely knocked everyone's socks off!! He had an incredible voice for singing too!!
We have not doubt that Mike is singing along with the angels in heaven today!
He will be deeply missed and always loved. He touched more lives than we will ever know or can ever imagine. We are blessed to be two of those people.
  • Mike Kavanaugh
Aw, Say it ain't so Mike...
I've listened to you for so many years I can't imagine how lonely Sundays are going to be for me.
My most sincere condolences to the Kavanaugh family. It hurts really bad now, but soon there will be smiles, sad ones yes, but good memories usually bring smiles.
He was a good man, and will be sorely missed.
  • WSB'S LOSS
I feel like we lost a great friend. His Sunday morning show has always been my listening pleasure since 1990. What a great loss and I will miss him. Denise
  • miss you
Mike was a rare treasure and I couldn't believe what I was hearing as I tuned in Sunday morning. It was like losing a friend because of his deep and genuine concern for his world and helping others. But can you imagine how fine his voice will sound in heaven singing praises to our Lord? There was a warm gentleness in his voice----one that was a reassuring and full of love. You could sense it as you listened. My son and I always listened to him driving to church every Sunday. The Sunday drive will be empty for quite some time. I don't know what we'll do to fill the void. I met him one time when he was working Christmas Kids with Clark Howard and he seemed as gracious and receptive as could be. A feeling came over me like I had known him forever. My eyes have misted up many times since yesterday. Mike, I can't wait to greet you up in Heaven! Love and comfort to his wife, daughter, grandaughter, family and friends. God bless you, Mike.
  • Thank You!
Mike will be greatly missed. He has helped more people than we will ever know with his sound financial advice.
  • Next Assignment
Mike was never one of those who was impressed with himself about his celebrity. Always down to earth, always willing to stop and talk. Never to busy for a question from a listener in the grocery -- or here, at WSB AM, in the hallway. That he was asked by his Boss to take on another assignment, so early, is a testimony to the compassionate nature of his soul. Our hearts go out to his family that they can find solace in his life lived well.
  • WSB = We're Sad Brother
What a sad day. Anyone lucky enough to be a friend of his knows how generous Mike was with his time and his care. He was a terrific mentor, a trusted coworker, and an incredible advocate on personal finance and consumer empowerment. He was dedicated to WSB listeners and his clients. He has served a critical role recently in calming listeners against panic in the market downturn, offering hope and sound, solid guidance on what their plan of action should be.

He was also a fantastic ambassador for WSB. In 11 years working there, I would hold up Mike alongside Clark Howard as the two true standard bearers of integrity for WSB.

He was also devoted to the community, his long-term support of FODAC being one of many examples. Of course, he was also a devoted family man. Mike loved them dearly, and made sure everyone knew his granddaughter hung the moon!

For the official historian, WSB = We're Sad Brother.

Stocks may be down, but Heaven is a richer place today. Mike, we already miss you.
  • With Deepest Sympathy
Mike, I listened to you on Sundays when I'm not in church. Your financial advise has made me a better investor. You've been an inspiration to all your listeners. We will miss you dearly.
  • Great Guy
I will miss his intellect on money matters. My best regards to his biological and professional family.

I hope know how much he meant to all of us strangers brings comfort to you.
  • sleep well
I have listed to Mike since I moved back to Atlanta in 1995 for the drive home. I am one of those whose life has changed because of his money matters show. From being very in debt to being in a solid finacial position 10+ years later. My family is better for having listened to him many a Sunday morning as I folded laundry. I never really talked about that to anyone else, and I am sure that their are many people/families like me. Thanks Mike for sharing your passion with us on Sunday morning.
My thoughts and prayers for peace are with your family and coworkers during this difficult time.
  • Thank you
Mike, it is because of you that I have a home and a 401K. I try everyday to do the best I can because of what you taught my family and I that day in your office. We are that much less without you and that much stronger because of you.
  • Mike Kavanagh
Mike was one of my closest friends. I was there in 1984 when he showed up from RKO in New York for the News Director job at WCNN Radio in Atlanta just before that joke of a station turned upside down. I was producing the Braves on radio that year, along with Georgia Tech Football and Basketball that fall. We instantly became friends and again worked together at the CNN Radio Network when I started there in 1986. He just happened to be in the room on my first day to confirm all of my previous employment on my resume, and to act as a reference, since we had crossed paths and worked together so often. We would laugh about that for years to come. He went to WSB Radio just after I left there, having worked part time helping to produce the Falcon and UGA broadcasts from 1985 to 1989. We always stayed in touch, mainly while I was on the road playing music full time since leaving CNN in 1996. I would listen to him as far out on the road as the WSB signal would carry. I would call him in the newsroom, and he would call me on the road. My 90 year old mother loved listening to him, and he actually took time to send her a personal letter and an autographed picture. She is also saddened at the news of his passing. Around this time of year during the holidays, I would usually visit Mike at the WSB Radio studios to catch up over a cup of coffee. We were going to try to visit sometime this month once I came in off the road. He made it a point to always feature the first copy of most of my 8 CD's as they were released on his Sunday show, Money Matters. Most recently, he featured some recent tracks of mine on his syndicated folk music show, which he was just developing. He was wanting to get more into promoting music artists such as myself and others. When we talked in November, he had my latest CD playing in his car. When things weren't always going as I thought they should, he would always encourage me to stay the course. Mike was a friend, and also a mentor to me in not just one, but in two careers. I feel that I owe much of my existence to him . He was an inspiration from day one when we first shook hands, all the way to the day he left. This is a loss all too sudden and all too uncalled for, and one that I will never get over... not ever!. - Roger Wilson

  • Mike Kavanaugh
I am not a fan of talk radio, but I happened to hear Mike one Sunday morning a long time ago while I was on my way to Quaker Meeting. Charmed by his beautiful voice and spirit and educated by his sensible financial advice, I've tried to listen to him ever since. Yesterday, I was shocked when I heard the very sad news of his death during my regular Sunday routine.
  • Mike Kavanagh
Thoughts and prayers are with Mike's family. What a terrible, premature loss. Atlanta has truly lost a friend.
  • will be missed
We will all miss his warm voice and his retirement advice, we are so sorry for ur loss.
  • Mike
I was the Program Director at 95.5 THE BEAT in it's early days. Mike was such a great guy... and a great broadcaster-what a voice! He was always a pleasure to meet in the hall way. He was also very giving of his time and advice. He was on of the first people to introduce himself to me when I came to work there. It was a pleasure to see him at work every day. He will be missed.
  • Thank you Mike
I just heard the news and I am deeply saddened. Mike was a wonderful person who had a talent he shared with many.
Years ago I first heard his great radio program. That was the inspiration which started me to invest on a serious basis. Over the years listening to Mike and following the "basics" allowed me to become a millionaire in my 40's. I would never have accomplished this without Mike's positive on air guidance every week.
I never had the honor of meeting Mike in person. However, I feel a tremendous loss. We have lost not only a true mentor but a friend who was kind enough to share his talent with many people he probably never got to meet.
Mike you will be missed by many. Thank you for your positive outlook and the years of guidance in this ever changing financial world.
  • My wife and I were shocked to hear of Mike's passing. I had known Mike for over twenty years first in our work together at CNN Radio and kept up with him as the decades passed. he was very kind to us and he will be greatly missed
  • He helped our Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation
Mike hosts our foundation website, which, ironically, is about Sudden Cardiac Arrest and children. Many people may not know that Mike had a passion for helping nonprofits and rising music artists. After my young son died 6 years ago, Mike's firm invited us in to teach his staff about CPR and automated defibrillators, knowing that many of them had young children. Mike learned, by coincidence, that his granddaugter attends the same elementary school as my son did. That's when he really became engaged, called me, and I spent 2 hours in his office being tutored on improving our website, encouraging us on the importance of what we are doing and offering to help us create a PSA.

Mike was a warm, engaging, energetic sole and will be sorely missed by many. Kelsey, we haven't met you but we know all about you and how much your grandfather loved you. To Grace and the rest of the Kavanagh family, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.
  • Mike touched so many
I just heard the news about Mike. Although I never called in I listened to Mikes advice each week.He is one of God's gifts to us.My sympathy and prayers go out to Mike's family,co workers, friends, and listeners.
May the Grace of God be with each of you in this difficult time.
    Thanks for EVERYTHING Mike..........
  • He Was truly GREAT
I had the pleasure of working with Mike Kavanagh over the last two years before I moved to Kentucky. He was one of the most professional broadcaster I've had the pleasure to work with over the past 30 years. I also considered him a friend and he will be missed. This is a sad day in radio for all of us. np
  • Surprise Passing of Mike
Our prayers, thoughts, and support to Grace, his daughter, Kelsey, and the family.
Mike's Money Matters radio show was a part of our Sunday activity right after church. We became a client of Capital over two years ago. One thing I liked about Mike, his show, and our meetings together, was that it was like talking to a neighbor and taking a guest into your home. If you wanted 30 minutes of his time, he gave you an hour of service. You always felt that he was standing in your shoes as if he shared the exact same problem and together would come out of it with some good solid common sense & financial planning. His honesty and integrity backed by his financial wisdom will standout forever. He loved sharing notes about how well his clients were doing and his granddaughter Kelsey. He truly was one of a kind. In loving memory...

  • Mike will be missed
I listened to Mike on the way to church on Sundays. His advise was and is the best around. His financial commentary help me and others and he will be missed, but take note, his advise last a lifetime.

The voices in heaven just got stronger! Mike was an excellent broadcaster (one of the very best) and an even better man. I'm glad I had the honor to work with him. Mike thanks for the laughs, the advice and your kindness. Much Love my friend to you and your family!

  • Mike Kavanagh's Untimely Passing
As I drove to work this morning, I wondered why I was hearing the rebroadcast of a program, but did not hear enough of the program to learn of the devastating news until this evening. My husband and I were fortunate in meeting Mr. Kavanagh a couple of years ago, and I cannot express in this note what an instantly likable, professional person he was. He made you feel like you were the most important person to him at that moment. He was also a very happy person, and said so. Just like my other Sunday morning buddy, Tim Russert, I will never get used to a Sunday morning without him.
Deepest sympathy to family, and friends.
  • A Man With Wisdom
Mike was a great man! I would listen to him on Sunday mornings to get some real advise on how to save and invest my money.I got alot of great advise listening to him and alot of wisdom too. He will be truly missed. Our thoughts and prayers to his wife and family. God bless you all!
"Make use of the light while there is still time; then you will become light bearers."

  • Mike K.
As many others have already stated, Mike's impact on our lives have been immeasurable. I attended a seminar hosted by Lisa at her former Tea House where he freely gave us his time and advice and Lisa his support; it was inspiring to me to see their friendship. My tribute to Mike's memory is to complete the implementation of the financial plan he helped me to create. His Sunday morning voice and words of sound advice will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the Kavanagh family at this time, may God bless and comfort you.
  • A fine man
We listened for years...his fine voice still echoes in my ears. His advice was trusted and true, and beyond this, one could surmise the character of the man...and it was good! Sincere sympathy to Mike's wife, family and friends. He will be remembered for his fine example of a life well-lived.
  • My dear friend Mike,
First Tim Russert and now you. We just so recently spoke about him at our last lunch together. You rescued me from the abyss Mike when the dot com bust nearly broke my reason for being. You made me whole again with your steady hand, your encouragement and insight and your never ending positive outlook on life. I went on many trips over the years and you always asked me not to forget to send you a postcard. Where do I send my postcards now?

And what of our collaboration on Folk Music America? Who will be out there now to carry on? We had such great plans in mind to bring some cheer, happiness and uplifting songs back out on the radio and help a cause we both loved dearly - all the animals at Best Friends Animal Society and in shelters all across the country.

Whenever I called you, you always answered - "Hey there". Maybe you answered this way to everyone that called, maybe not. I will sorely miss hearing your voice. It should never have been stilled so young.

As I write this through teary eyes I hurt so much thinking about Grace, your daughter and your granddaughter Kelsey. Oh how they'll miss you. You are irreplacable my friend.

How my heart aches that you had to leave all of us on your birthday. It should have been a celebration.

If you could read all the comments left here by your friends and colleagues and listeners, you know how you touched so many hearts and lives.

You were one of the rarest people alive - genuine. You cared more about others than you did of yourself. Your selfishness was unequaled.

I will always miss you Mike. My heartfelt condolenses go out to Grace, your daughter, Kelsey and all of your WSB pals and business colleagues.

Heaven is a better place with you there now. I'm sure you'll be hosting your new show for eternity.

Sleep well tonight my friend. Sleep well.

    Pete
  • You will be greatly missed
I have listed to your Money Matters radio show on several occasions. What an honor to listen to you on the radio. You have an excellent voice and you will be truly missed!
  • Mike Kavanagh
As evident from all of the comments, we have lost a great man who was admired and appreciated by many. Although we never met Mike, his distinctive voice, his sound advise, and his passion to help others will always be remembered. God bless his family and thank God for allowing this precious soul to touch our lives.
  • Stunned
I almost don't know what to say. He was one of my trinity of media financial mentors since the mid-90's: Larry Burkett, Clark Howard, and Mike Kavanagh. Now only Clark remains to keep the flame burning.

God speed, Mike. May the road rise up to meet you...
  • Mike
We were deeply sadden today to hear of Mike's passing. It was as though we have lost a dear friend. He touched so many lives. He was a man that was not ashamed of his love of people and of his faith. He was a good person. We will miss him. His family is in our prayers.
  • What an incredible loss for Atlanta!
I just heard on the local news about his death. My heart truly sank. This man loved helping people out and was truly selfless in every sense of the word.
  • Mike was awesome
It broke my heart to hear of Mike's passing. I, like many others, have enjoyed listening to him on WSB over the years. My prayers are with the family in this time of sorrow. Even though he may not be with us, he will stay in our hearts.
  • Mike's untimely demise
Like so many, I was shocked and saddened this morning to hear of Mike's death. Radio listeners rarely get to meet the voices they welcome into their lives. But, from listening to him, one could feel his humanity. We will all miss him. Condolences to his family and friends. If there is any comfort to be taken with such a loss, it is that in my tradition it states only the greatest and wisest of men are accorded the honor to die on their birthday, as Mike did. If only it had been years from now....
  • I will miss Mike.
My deepest condolences to the Kavanagh family, and his extended families at wsb and his firm. Please know that Mike touched me and my family, with brilliant financial advise that will last for generations to come.Thank-you for sharing your love-one with us and the world.
  • I will miss you Mike... God Bless you and your Family!
Thanks for what you have done brother, who you were and how you did it. You were/are a class act and a super nice guy. Always there to listen and talk to. You will never be forgotten and thank you for being a part of my life.
  • Just met him, too
I met Mike and Grace for the first time at My Aunt and Uncle's for Thanksgiving- Mike was their neighbor and close friend. Mike and I reminices about the old days of radio in Atlanta- WKLS, Don Kennedy, Jim Wilder and even kidded around a bit about Clark.

He was a fountain of financial information and I was honored to have known him, if only for a short time.
  • Mike K
I visited Mike in his office 3 years ago to get his advice on my financial situation. He was friendly, candid, and helpful. He guided me then and offered to help me again whenever I needed assistance. I and many others will miss him.
  • More Than a Radio Personality
Condolences to the Kavanagh Family, the WSB Family and to those of us who may not have known Mike personally but whom included him as part of our extended family. His mentoring which has benefited all of us will missed, but never forgotten.
  • I will miss Mike
I was saddened to hear the news that Mike had passed away yesterday. He will me missed. I really enjoyed listening to him over the years. He will be truly missed. Although I never knew Mike, or had ever seen his picture until now it is a great loss. My deepest condolences go out to his family.
  • Mike was A True Professional and will be MISSED!!
I heard this morning-by chance-on the radio-- AM 750 WSB --of the very sudden loss of OUR FRIEND, MIKE!!

WE will all miss him greatly! He added so much to ALL our lives --through his financial advice--and through his GENUINE CARING --of his fellow man! He will be VERY MUCH MISSED by ALL who KNEW him --and ALL who both admired and relied on his VERY professional and accurate advice.
  • Mike
What a lost for his family and his radio audience! Mike's voice was distinctive and Sunday mornings will be empty without him. Mike made a difference in this world.
  • I'm heartbroken
I turned on the radio and got in the shower as usual. I was somewhat annoyed that Santa was on AGAIN. After all, the show is called Money Matters. Through the sound of the running water, I heard the mournful refrain of bagpipes, and paused to hear who had died. I was stunned to learn that it was my Sunday morning "friend," Mike Kavanagh. My heart is broken. I've never met the man, but his warmth, caring, and humor made me feel as if I knew him. He clearly loved people. When the tears stopped, it dawned on me that Mike is in a wonderful place with his Father. One day I'll meet him, and be able to thank him for his wonderful financial, and "life" advice. God bless Grace, Melissa and Kelsey, and his WSB radio "family."
  • My Condolences
Dearest Family, I am sorry for your loss. I did not know Mr. Kavanagh, I did listen to him. He had a familiar voice that made you feel he cared. He will be missed!
  • Mike
He will be missed by so many of us. A true loss to all of us in Atlanta who so valued his advice and that wonderful, uplifting voice. I will pray for God's arms around you at this sorrowful time.
  • Loss of a Great Man
Mike was always professional and sincere. It was a pleasure to listen to him on the ride home from work and on Money Matters. We've lost a true gentlemen. You will be missed, and have touched more lives than you will ever know. Rest in peace.
  • We'll miss Mike
I felt empty this morning not havein Mike to listen to on the radio. I paused for many minutes before continuing my Sunday. I always listened to Mike's wisdom on Sunday on the way to grocery shop. He had become part of my life and had a profound affect on how I managed my finances. Mike will be missed terribly.
  • Mike Kavanagh
While driving this morning to an appointment I had the dial set to 750 am all set to hear Mike Kavanaugh - and instead came the news that he has passed away! I was stunned and have had tears off and on all day. I only met Mike in person twice when he carefully reviewed my modest financial assets and offered for free his advice - as if I'd had millions to manage. His sincere concern, his uplifting outlook and his generosity was so special - and if anyone needs proof that one life can make a difference, Mike's life is proof. My condolences to his family, his friends, and all who will miss Mike Kavanaugh in their lives.
  • I consider it a privilege to have known Mike and to have been able to share the air with him on WSB. His passing is a loss for all of Atlanta. My sincerest condolences to his family and his friends and radio family at WSB.
  • Mike kavanaugh
I will miss hearing his voice on Sunday with a cup coffee. I never see his face only his voice until now. Rest in Peace
  • A life well lived
The passing of Mike comes with great sadness and shock to all that knew him personally and through his show. Mike left us far too early but he led a life worth living while he was here. By helping people prepare for their retirement, he helped people gain a peace of mind with their finances. But Mike also loved where he worked and was loved by the people he worked with. I am very fortunate to have worked with him for the short time I did. Mike will be missed by all.
  • Condolences
It just goest to show there is much more to life than making money and stressing out over finanacial matters. Spend it while you can. Rest in Peace, friend.
  • Mike Kavanaugh
Although I live in Maine, I often listened to "Money Matters" online and found Mike's program very informative. WSB has lost a great personality.
  • My deepest sympathy
I have listened to Mike for years and I was so shocked and saddened when I heard the news that he had passed away. I had listened to his show when Santa was on with him and it was very special to me. I listened to all of it again today when it was replayed and it was such a sad reminder of the wonderful man he was and how very much he will be missed by all who knew him both personally and as our financial adviser and friend. My family sends our deepest sympathy to Grace and all of his family. You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time.

  • A True Gentleman and Person to All
Our world will miss Mike dearly, as he is one who makes simplicity both virtuous and beautiful for all. May we all continue in his footsteps that he has laid for us to follow. Being a long time WSB Money Matters listener since he started back in the early 1990s, I celebrate his life and share my best wishes to all his family and friends. Rich P.

My heart is full of sadness. This really sucks...May we all remember his advice to Sleep well at night" Rest in peace. And Please Support FODAC...They ROCK!!
  • Mike Kavanagh
We have listened to Mike every Sunday morning while having breakfast before going to church for several years. As I walked into my kitchen this morning my husband asked if I had heard who passed away, then I heard it on the radio. It was a shock to me. I feel as if Mike is a family member. We met him once while attenting one of the seminars he and Clark organized. What a wonderful man he was. I could tell that he was a loving husband and father. I remembered when his grand daughter was born. He never failed to speak of her. I remembered listening to him last Sunday and he said how wonderful Christmas was going to be this year. How sad! Why do good people always have to leave so soon.
To his immediately family and wsb family please accept our deepest sympathy. Remember that God is your refuge and strength a present help at such a time as this. Lean on him he cares so much for you.
  • Will miss Mike on Sunday mornings

  • heart felt sorrow and prayers for his family
To what I said on the radio I can only add, that the worlds of finance and broadcasting need more people like Mike. Old-school integrity and professionalism, aimed at the listener and making the city, country and other peoples lives better. Not ego centric but focused on others instead of self. It was fun and an honor working with you Mike, you are missed.
  • Driving to Church
Mike was such a friendly voice. I never knew him personally, but I could tell he was a genuine, caring person. We will miss him. God bless his Family with the comfort knowing that he was a good and faithful servant.
  • You have left a legacy
I would look forward to Sunday mornings for Mike's show, Money Matters. Since I am unable to catch Clark Howard during the week due to my work schedule, I tuned in to Money Matters very frequently. Mike has left a legacy to all of his listeners."Sleep Well At Night" was one of his sayings regarding investing. Make sure you can sleep well at night when choosing your investment vehicles. Now Mike can sleep well knowing he has left a legacy of financial advice behind. My sincere condolences to his family. Thank you for educating me about my finances!

  • Good Bye
I've listened to Mike on the radio for years. Once he talked about the history of WSB that he had added to the radio's website. I looked it up and was just amazed at the detail and love that went into that. I wrote to thank him for his hard work and obvious love of his profession. I do hope he knew how much everyone loved him and his work. He will be missed.
  • Mike Kavanagh
The world is a sadder place without Mike Kavanagh. I also listened to him every Sunday morning and could tell that he really loved life. I will miss him, like everyone who heard or met him.
  • No words
Like so many other in the broadcasting business, I owe Mike more than I can every express. His friendship, his advice, his mentorship was priceless.
  • Mike and his family
Words cannot express the pain being felt by Mike's wife, daughter, coworkers, etc. He was a voice I relied on for many things, one of which was the sense of security the sound of his voice gave. My prayers go out to the Kavanagh family, may you find strength in the memories of Mike and the legacy he leaves with you.

He spoke of his wonderful wife Grace, to me, a perfect stranger, and told me how happy his life was. He gave me so much courage....I am deeply saddened and truly believe I have lost a friend. Grace, our hearts are with you. We have all lost a light in Atlanta.
  • Thank You Mike
When I came to work at WSB 5 years ago Mike was the first host to greet me warmly and make me feel welcome in the studio. Thank you for the warmth, the smiles, the advice and the donut holes. You fed us all on Sundays both spiritually and physically. Miss you.

  • A true professional and fine gentleman
Mike and I have been friends for many years, and it is with a heavy heart that I write. As a former broadcaster, and one who had the honor of working many projects with Mike, I can say without reservation that he brought to broadcasting and journalism a degree of professionalism surpassed by none other, while always being the consummate gentleman. His professional and personal standards are examples that we all should strive to achieve. My prayers and condolences are with Grace and Mike's family and his colleagues at WSB. Sincerely, Sam Hall

I'm sad to hear of Mr. Kavanagh's passing. He was truly one of the good guys. Your advice was helpful to many people! May God Bless and Keep your family.
  • Thanks Mike!!
Thanks Mike for the two hours you gave us last Tuesday. As me and my wife went to ask financial counseling. Thanks Mike for allow us to see you for the first time and sadly for the last time...Thanks Mike for been so naturally brilliant and a really genuine gifted person...Thanks Mike for share with us your professional vocation and passion, your charisma and philosophy on how to enjoy life with money as you said:"it is something you has to have". Thanks Mike for being so modest...such a given person...You really impacted us...Thanks Mike for allow me to know and enjoy your professional character which I shared as seen you "prescribing" me financial remedies. Thanks Mike for give us the opportunity to tell you at the last minute this: We have listening you and Clark since 1991 and we are coming to see you because you are the only person we know we can trust financially... Thanks Mike for your notes and advisement that we will keep for ever... Thanks Mike for opening your heart for hope and have better understanding of life these days. We wish to have enjoyed you more personally, but we have already taken your outstanding knowledge, your character and your professional legacy from your office to live your ideas and to practice what you just did on your birthday...SWAN...YOU WILL BE GREATLY MISSED...
  • Gratitude
We listened faithfully to you every Sunday morning. Thank you for your kindness, wisdom and inspiration. You will be missed. God bless you.

  • Mike's untimely death
Words fail me as I think of Mike. I'm saddened by his death but as many have said he's in a better place, My heart go out to Grace, his daughter, granddaughter and Mother. Nay they have peace in the knowledge that he was well loved especially us Atlantans.May God keep you in the hollow of his hand Mike. God bless WSB.
  • Family
When I tuned to 750 this morning at 9AM I was so sad to here the news. Mike will be missed like one of my family. That is amazing to feel that connection on the radio with someone like Mike. He was really good.
  • Remembering Mike
Where do you begin? I mean, after all, words could never begin to express how GREAT of a man Mike truly was. Mike was a professional in every sense of the word, showing up often times 2 hours before the start of his show to do show prep. Not only would Mike show up 2 hours before the start of his show, but he would ALWAYS bring dough nut holes for the Sunday morning crew. When you would thank Mike for his generosity, he would simply say, "It's just something that I do." That was Mike for you!

When I was informed of Mike's passing, my heart crumbled! God blessed many of us with the opportunity to work with Mike Kavanagh, and each of us know there was a reason for that. Mike taught us a lot, not only about how to become financially stable, but also about life in general. He was a friend, a co-worker, and a mentor.

On Sunday, November 30, 2008, we had Santa Claus as a guest on the show. At the end of the show, we decided to take a picture with Santa. The next weekend, Mike walked in and the first thing he said to us was, "Did you see how great that picture turned out?" I said, "Yeah Mike, I'm glad we took that picture." Mike said, "Yeah, me too, it was great!" I later learned that he set it as his default picture on Facebook.

As Mark Arum so eloquently said during the Tribute Show this morning, "WSB's signal is a little weaker now."

Mike, we'll see you on the other side, friend!
  • Mike K will be missed
Our family has been regular listeners to the sunday morning show by Mike. We will miss him. I cried when I heard the news this morning. Our sympathy goes out to his family.
  • Mike Kavanagh
Thanks Mike for sharing your expertise, your spirit and true love of life with the rest of us. Heaven's doors are open for you. God Bless
Prayers and good thoughts to your family.
  • A great and gentle person
I had met Mike about a month ago. He not only gave me financial but also career advice and talked about what he did to protect his loved ones. He really enjoyed helping others. I was so shocked this morning when I heard the news. My deepest sympathies to his family.
  • Mike Kavanaugh
We were so sorry to learn this morning of Mike's untimely death. Like so many of our gifted local personalities who enter our homes and our hearts through the broadcast media, Mike was like someone that we had come to know personally. Clearly all of our friends at WSB as well as Mike's vast listening audience feel a great sense of loss today.
  • heartfelt sorrow about Mike
What a tearfully sad time for all of Mike's listeners, co workers, friends, and especially his family. I feel very sad about Mike being gone, I never met him....but with everything people said about him and all he did for people....I feel now like I just lost a friend. I enjoyed his show and I will be a client in his firm very soon. Now that I know what kind of person he really was, I am sure that his fellow partners have to be decent people too.
  • My Friend, Mike Kavanagh
I came to know Mike through the WSB
"Oldtimers" group. He was instrunemtal in making sure the history of WSB was
preserved through his website, WSB History dot com. We worked at WSB and
CNN at different stages of our careers,
and we had many wonderful conversations about radio then and now. I consider myself one of the lucky ones who got to
know the person behind the voice. He
was truly one of America's great radio
talents. His greatest pride was his
family: his mother, wife, daughter and
grandchild. They were also his greatest
concern. WSB and its listeners have
lost a remarkable friend. This is a very sad day for me, and for those who
    knew him well.
  • Profound Sadness
I always thought that if I ever came into a great deal of money that I would seek Mr. Kavanagh's advice. I think that he had a wonderful combination of wisdom and humor. What a loss to all of us.
  • Mike Kavanagh's Passing
I was heart broken to learn this morning of the passing of Mr. Kavanagh. I had listened to him over the years on WSB and on his Money Matters show. He always made me feel that he cared about people no matter the circumstances. My husand and I had met with him personally some years ago at Capital Investments. My heartfelt condolences go out to everyone that was touched by his life. My husband passed away 3 years ago on December 6 at the age of 54 so I have some first hand comprehension of the devastation everyone feels, especially during this holiday season. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
  • Mr. Kavanagh
Will miss hearing his voice on the radio... Condolences to his family.
  • To the Entire WSB Family
I was shocked when I got home from my work at church this morning to learn the news. For years I have been listening to the advice that Mike would give, but also expierenceing the heart of the man behind the microphone. You will be remembered Mike, but your WSB family and us, your extended WSB family. May God bless your family in this time and give them comfort to know that today you are watching over us and that one day those of us who never met you will be able to finally say "hello".
  • Thank You, Mike
I listened to Mike every Sunday while getting ready for church. I felt like I knew him, even though we'd never met. I learned so very much from him about personal finance... and Mike was always so honest, warm, and his caring nature always came through. I was so shocked and saddened today when I heard the news of his sudden passing. I will be praying for his family during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Mike and thank you for all you did for your listeners. You will be greatly missed!
  • He will be remembered
The voice of calm in many situations will be missed but always remembered.
    Prayers to Family & Friends.
  • See you on the other side, Mike!
I honestly don't know where to start. There are no words that could EVER begin to express how much Mike meant to myself and the entire WSB family. He was a professional in every sense of the word, and would be at the radio station at 7 a.m. often times, when he show began at two hours later, at 9 a.m. Mike will ALWAYS be a part of my life, and I'm so thankful to God and WSB that I was given the opportunity to be a part of Mike's show.

On Sunday, November 30th, we had Santa Clause on the show. At the end of the show, we took a picture with Santa. The next Sunday, Mike walked into the studio and the first thing he said was, "Matt, did you see how good that picture with Santa turned out?" I said, "Yeah Mike, I'm really glad we took that!" Mike replied, "Me too, it was great!" He ended up posting it as the default picture on his Facebook site, and I could never begin to tell you how much that meant to me! I will forever cherish that picture!!

Mike, I'll see you on the other side, friend!
  • Heart felt gratitude
Thank you kindly to Grace and the rest of the Kavanagh family for sharing Mike with us for all these years. His help was priceless, his voice peaceful and his example beyond powerful.

I just sat in my car and cried upon learning of Mike's death. I'll miss him more than words can say.
  • Missing Mike
Sunday Mornings won't be the same. I listened every Sunday on the way too Church. This Morning was a sad and quite ride. You will be Missed. Love The Clines
  • Mike Kavanagh
It was a privilege to work with Mike at WSB. He brought such integrity to his work and he was so gifted behind the microphone, especially when he was anchoring breaking news. He took such delight in his family; I extend my deepest sympathies to his beloved wife, Grace. He will be truly and deeply missed.
  • Mike K
I am so sorry for the loss of Mike K. He was such a distinguished, genuine and friendly character that will leave a huge gap in Atlanta radio. My condolences go out to the family and friends as well as the 750 radio station.
  • Mike K

  • Mike Kavanagh
My condolences to Mike's family and friends. I listened to him every Sunday and will miss his kind and honest voice.
  • It's often said that you don't know how good something is until it's gone. That is definitely not the case with Mike Kavanagh. I think listeners knew how good he was, and that makes his passing even more sad. I will miss hearing his advise, voice and spirit on the radio.
  • My condolences to Mike's family
I listened to Mike every Sunday while I was dressing for church. I learned so much because he explained everything so well and I knew hekprtw was a good and honest man.
  • We will miss Mike!
Our Sunday mornings were not complete without Mike's voice telling us that through faith in God we will survive! Our prayers go out to all who loved Mike (as we did). God bless you.
  • What a voice!
Mike's resonating voice was the first one to catch my attention on Atlanta radio when I moved here in '92. Eventually, I had the pleasure of working with Mike for over a year as his board engineer on Sunday mornings. Mike was a respected colleague beyond comparison. I will miss his genuine and uplifting personality. We all will.
  • Mike Kavanagh
This is a very sad day for my wife and I. For 16 years prior to my retirement, I followed Mike and Clark Howard. On retirement, Mike's firm took my "short" 401K fund and enabled us to SWAN and become debt-free - even through the economic downturn. Mike's ethics; his concern for others; and his financial wisdom makes me proud, as a Consumer Action Center volunteer, to happily refer callers to Mike's radio show and web site. No matter how busy he was, Mike's office door was always open. Our hearts go out to Mike's family and to the "family" at Capital Investment Advisors, Inc.
  • Mike
I have lost a member of my WSB 'daily family'. A brilliant man and a comforting voice. God has embraced you Mike! God bless WSB Radio - all of you make our days sweeter. Mark P - Cumming.
  • A Sad Day In Atlanta Radio
As a former radio annoucer, I loved Mike's "beautifully smooth" radio voice. As a full-time investor, I was always impressed with Mike's dedication to others to really attempt to keep their investing completely ethical and wise in every way. My wife and I will really miss hearing his thoughtful investment ideas in a world where there is much risk in investing. Our sympathy goes out to Mike's family in your deep loss.
  • Thank you Mike
Your advice and wise counsel on the air for many years made me a better investor, friend, and person. My condolences to your family. Thank you!
  • A STAND UP GUY
I have listened to Mike for years. I went to hire him and he told me "you can do this yourself, save your money" What a honest guy!!! MIKE was the "true" friend.... I o2yqbnever knew! God Bless his family.
  • Your will be Missed
I never met Mike, But every Sunday I would get in the car with the Kids, and head off too Church, Everytime I had to fight with Kids about what we would Listen on the Radio. All I would say is I'm listening to Mike, This Morning the kids rode to Church with ther'e friends. So I was happy that the drama of the morning would not happen. I got in the car and turned on the radio in peace, the first thing I heard was Mike passed away. Well I sat in the garage and just cryed. My peaceful ride to church, was not a pleasant ride. I wish I had The kids with me. Maybe I would have heard Mike in the present. Sunday Morning will never be the same. You are loved and will be missed. Michele D. Cline
  • God Bless
I was truly saddened to hear of Mike's death. I never met the man, but felt as if he was a true friend. God Bless his family and friends. You are in our thoughts.
  • Mike
I think he would be deeply honored if Mike's friends, co workers and many listeners started a fund for a large donation to FODAC. The WSB Radio personalities could lead the fund raiser. I don't think ther could be a greater tribute to a man who will be sorely missed
  • Thank you Mike
Mike met with me, my husband, and mother several years ago. My husband is a very careful man when he makes decisions. While our meeting was about my mother's financial future, we came away with a bigger appreciation of how to handle our own future. My husband told me if anything ever happened to him, he wanted me to go to Mike to handle the business he had built in the past 20 years. Just in that one hour meeting, he was ready to trust a man and his business to handle all those years of hard work.

He was a true gentleman, had a fantastic speaking voice, dedicated to his family, very interested in life, charity, and inspired so many people. What a full life he lead.

I was totally stunned when I heard he passed away so suddenly. Too soon. May the angles watch over Grace, his daughter, his granddaughter, and his mom as they go through the next few difficult weeks. God Bless You All.
  • Remembrance and reminder
Mike Kavanagh is a beacon of inspiration to the goodness in all of us. His 3 greatest contributions are his enduring love in faith, family, and friendship to everyone of us he touched personally and through the power of radio. We all are better for his financial ministery he provide every Sunday morning.

I will always remember his personal advise he gave me during a phone conversation saying "if you were my sister" approach that was sincere and genuine. It's a real wake-up call that there is no guarantee to the time we have. Mike's passing is a huge reminder of living your life to the fullest. Mike lived his life everyday with the joy of Christmas spirit.

Condolences to his family, friends, and everyone who loved him.
  • He's be missed
It was an honor and privilege to work with Mike for several years. He will be missed.
  • Mike's Passing
Mike was a true icon of Atlanta radio. He will be missed immensely. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the WSB Radio family and Mike's own immediate family as well. May you take some solace in how Mike touched so many people's lives. God be with you!

  • Mike, you will be missed!
I had the privilege of meeting with Mike less than 2 weeks ago the free financial consultations he provided. He was a warm, wonderful man and in addition to the financial advise he gave me, he gave me insight to life, living and how not to worry - especially in these economic times. I was honored to spend the hour with him that I did. We will all miss him!
  • Mike kavanagh broadcast Giants
    Working alongside Mike, I marveled at his voice; knowledge; professionalism; energy;
passion and collegiality. As fine a broadcaster as I've ever known. An even better person. We miss you Mike
  • My condolences
I would listen to Mike every Sunday morning while working out. He was a truly delightful person, always cheerful and positive. He will be truly missed. My sincerest condolences to his family and the folks at WSB radio.
  • "My K"
As Stage Front, Atlanta has lost it's Movers and Shakers, there seems to be another large spot, appearing in the Chorus line.

As I watch, the lights dim, the curtains close, and the Orchestra silently puts away their instruments and file out the stage door.

The Marquee's brilliances', suddenly throw the sidewalk into darkness as the sign's turned off.

The show's over, the props have been stored away, and the Maintenance man has swept up the dusts of history.

As the Security Guard locks the door after the last Patron, turning to give the key to someone, all that's there is the December night, and melodies from afar.

Merry Christmas Mike, Nobody else does, but I remember your visits to the Atlanta Union Mission, when it was on Ellis street.

Say Hello to Rev. Herbert Barnes for me.
    And my personal thanks.
  • Mike C
I do hope the stress of the current economic mess and what it was doing to Mike's friends and neighbors was not the cause of the stress and his heart attack.
Both my wife and I will miss his wisdom and humanity.'
    R.I.P., Mike. You've earned it.
  • Missing Mike
As a Consumer Action Center volunteer, it was always a comfort giving out Mike's number to people who needed it; always knowing they would be well taken care of...will also miss his distinctive voice and wonderful advice on Sunday mornings.
  • My Friend Mike
It was so hard to drive into WSB today...because I knew that Mike would not be there...there would be no one that always seemed so glad to see you walk in the room. I will miss that on Sundays. Mike & I did the first live show in our new building...around 11 yrs ago. I was his producer and phone screener for years...and I loved every minute of working with him. I am so sad for his family...and for our WSB family. It is the end of an era. God Bless you Mike!!! Working with you has been a blessing!!
  • Mike will be missed
I never met Mike, but we always listened to him on Sunday morning. He was such a delightful guy to listen to. We will miss him so very much...
  • Our condolences to Mike's family and friends
I am so sorry to hear of Mike's untimely passing. He was indeed the consummate professional whose warmth still shone through his work. Deepest sympathy to his family, his colleagues at WSB, and his friends.
  • mike Kavanagh
I was saddened a couple of years ago when Mike 'retired' from the afternoon drive-time schedule. I sought out that wonderful voice of reason in financial matters on Sunday AMs on my way to & from church. It's hard to believe that his conversation with Santa last Sunday will be the last time we will hear him, at least in this life! My thoughts and prayers are with both Mike's biological family and his WSB family. He exuded calmness and wisdom in the craziness of finances. You will be sorely missed!
  • A Wonderful Man
I had the great honor of being a guest on Mike's show last week and words cannot express the wonderful man he was. I was lucky enough to spend those two hours with him talking about much more than just money. He was a proud husband, father and grandfather. You will be greatly missed my friend. Thanks for making this world a better place.
  • I Have Lost A True Friend Whom I Never Met
My kids are grown and my house is empty. One thing I looked forward to was my Sunday morning visits with Mike on WSB. We never met and I never called, but he was a reassuring, sensible, source of financial sanity and advice. You could sense the kindness and compassion in his heart. Like so many others, I will miss Mike. I never took the chance to thank him for being the great friend I never met. I know where he is now and I hope his family and friends can find comfort in that.
  • Dedicated to you
I'm an avid listener to all the shows on WSB which helped with finances and his show was one of them I listened to you.

It's a shame when those who God given talent is helping those who are suffering are taken from us sooner than when we like. But he is in a better place.

As a fellow radio personality on WCLK, I have just dedicated a song for him on my show "Collectors Showcase" called "Dedicated to You" from John Coltrane.

My prayers are with his wife and family!

    Blessings,
    Rodney
  • A humble man
A few years ago, Mike sat quietly in the midst of others at the Canine Assistance Graduation Program out in Alpharetta. When he was given recognition as a supporter, he seemed to be somewhat embarrased by the fuss the rest of the audience made over him. He was humble to a fault, a great radio personality and would give away good advise for free in his area of expertice, a trait not found much these days. He will be sincerely missed by the Atlanta area. Makes me sad.
  • Learned a Lot
Mike taught me a TON about financial planning and making wise decisions...beginning when I was 24 and needed all the help I could get. I also had the opportunity to interact with him professionally, and can't say I've met a more genuine, kind, thoughtful man. God Bless you, Mike
  • Honoring A Contributor
My nickname for Mike was the "World's Greatest Newsman," at which point he would always lower his head and try to disclaim the honor. I spent time with him covering some of the happiest and saddest times in our community and Country. His main concern in every broadcast was to serve his listeners and help them as a neighbor.
To me that ranked him as #1.
The impact of Mike's words, wisdom, work and kindness have aided many near and far.
His contributions to our community will be felt for generations to come.
I thank you Mike for being a wonderful person to work with and for the countless contributions you have made to help our community!
    God's Speed Buddy...Capt. Herb
  • A Sad Day...
I am shocked! A sad day indeed... I had the pleasure of working with Mike everyday for almost 5 years. I would pass by his "news desk" many times a day as I shuffled in and out of the studio. Mike was always in a good mood, always quick with the humor or a laugh between the various staffers working on the different stations. After he left the everyday news grind I was always excited when I ran into him in the building. Mike was a joy to work with, a person who will be missed by all. God bless you Mike!
  • Mike Kavanagh
    Working alongside Mike you had to marvel at his voice; knowledge; professionalism;
passion; collegiality; and energy. As fine a broadcaster as I'ver ever know.
An even better person! We all miss you Mike.
  • To Be Missed
Mike's advise has beed irreplacable in our household as I am sure it has been for countless others. May he live on in peace with his Lord and may his family take comfort in this through these difficult times. Our prayers are with them now.
  • Mike Cavanaugh
I just heard the news regarding Mike; my Sunday mornings will not be the same without hearing his sound advice. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
  • Mike Kavanagh is gone ... damn!
I was fortunate enough to work with Mike at WSB for several years, and he was the CONSUMMATE radio professional! But the best part of working with him was his friendliness, and sharp sense of humor! He treated everybody well ... even the part-time traffic reporters, and my life is better for working with him!

The tragic irony of Mike's passing is that he helped tens of thousands of people to plan for a comfortable retirement, and investing their money wisely, and yet he did not live to enjoy the earthly fruits of his own practices and philosophies. But I believe Mike has a GREATER reward in heaven.

I hope Grace and his family read these posts and see how many people Mike affected ... both on the air and off the air. Especially the former co-workers who still loved Mike years after working with him.

My condolences to Mike's family, his listeners, and especially his WSB Family ... my heart is with y'all!
  • Mike Kavanagh
When I arrived in Atlanta in 1990, with no idea how to manage my finances, I luckily found Mikes Sunday show. Every Sunday he went with me on walks, in my garden and wherever I went. Thanks to him, I am now out of debt and have some investments. I never met Mike but through his sunday show I feel as though I know his family. Condolences to everyone who loved Mike. Also to his Mother who lives in New York(I believe).
  • planner
Mike was my financial planner. I had decided early on in this meltdown that I wouldn't bother him about how my portfolio was vanishing daily. I figured he couldn't do anything about it and I just wouldn't add more stress to him. I cried this morning when I heard the news, almost like as if it were a member of my family. I lost my husband several years ago at this time of year and it's really a terrible time to lose a loved one. He always had time for me as though I was the only client he had. He truly was a "good man".
  • Mike's Sparkle and Sage will be missed
Mike Kavanagh's voice always had a sparkle to it no matter how tough the economic environment was. For his young years, he was a sage of wisdom and he will be missed tremendously! My heart aches for his wife, mother, daughter and granddaughter.
  • Mike
I loved listening to his radio show and enjoyed talking with him at Clark's Christmas Kids last year. I was looking forward to seeing him again this year with Clark Howard at Walmart. Prayers are with his family.
  • Attitude of Gratitude
I could not believe what I heard this morning when Mike's untimely passing was anounced this morning. I am very thankful to have just the opportunity to have listened and learned from such a great man. More than anything I will carry on his catch phrase of "attitude of gratitude." for the rest of my life starting this day.
  • Thank You
I was never much to sit around listening to the radio. But, after discovering Mike's wonderful show I used it as an excuse to drive from Vinings into Midtown coffee shop just so I could listen to Mr. Kavanagh on Sunday mornings.

To Mike's family, friends, and WSB thanks for sharing such a perfect human being. Bless You Mike.

    Sincerely,
    Craig W.
  • My Friend, Mike Kavanagh
I had the pleasure of working with Mike Kavanagh for the past 8 years and I can truly say that the kind man you heard on the radio every Sunday morning was the same man that I saw in the office every day. He was a breath of fresh air with his amazing voice and kind heart who was always willing to lend a hand to those in need. All of us at Capital will miss him greatly. He was a such a wonderful person.
  • Beloved Mike
Had the honor of being technical producer of Atlanta's Evening News with Mike and Lisa. A true professional everyday, and when the big stories broke, Mike was a world class broadcaster, effortlessly. We were in excellent hands. A loving friend always. Exceptional in every way. A man of warmth, class, and great intelligence. Our hearts are breaking. All my love to Mike's family.
  • Mike's Passing
Being longtime Sunday morning listeners, we are absolutely dismayed and saddened by the news of the death of this kind, generous, and good man. We will miss his powerful voice and booming laugh as he generously gave us financial advice and enouragement each week. He had met with each of us... giving each that generous free hour listening, evaluating, and sharing his time and expertise. We will miss him so much and want to express our condolences to all of you who worked with him at WSB, as well as to his wife and family. Our sadness is miniscule to what all of you must be feeling today. He was a grand communicator and we are so grateful to have been part of his radio community.
  • Class Guy...and extremely funny
Mike addressed the Atlanta Writers' Club last year and he was very entertaining and very funny, sharing some great radio stories. However, what impressed me even more was that he hung around and talked with any and all who wanted to and answered one-on-one questions.

His WSB History website is unparalleled and I hope someone will enable it to continue.

Another legend silenced. We will miss Mike.
  • Thanks Mike!!

  • Mike will be missed
He was a calming voice in challenging times -- he will be missed
  • Mike Kavanagh
Mike and I logged a lot of time together when he was anchoring afternoon drive and I was busy feeding him stories from Washington. He used to work here, and we always had some stories to trade about fellow colleagues he had left behind in DC. Mike you will be sorely missed not only as a colleague and friend, but as a true professional.

  • I will miss Mike
I met Mike after I took an early retirement and needed help with my investments. I was familar with his successful radio show, but had no idea how warm and charming he was in person. I will miss his Sunday morning show and hearing his optimistic viewpoint on life and living. Farewell old Friend!
  • Mike Kavanagh
Consummate professional. Great human being. Filled with kindness and friendship. Fountain of knowledge. One of American Radio's greatest products. We shared the common background of WSB and the love of its history. As a gift to 'all of us' he produced and maintained for WSB folks a web documentary of the station history and for "being and belonging". It is difficult to believe that his great voice will be stilled, but his memory to all who knew and heard him will live on and on. He will be missed.
  • Mike
I was out of town for about 6 weeks this Fall and did not here his last shows except for the recent Santa Claus interview two weeks ago. I tuned in this morning to get his grounded view that everything will be alright and what is really important. I was extremely saddened to hear of his passing. He will be missed.
I never personally met him, but I did email a question to him once. I was surprised at the length and in deptness of his advice. He taught us to Sleep Well At Night...now he can Sleep and Live Well in Heaven.
    Thank you Mike.
  • Mike Kavanagh
When I came to Atlanta in the 80's, I had the pleasure of working with Mike at CNN Radio, and then years later at WSB. What an incredible man!!! He was a true broadcast journalist. Someone I looked up to, not only as broadcaster, but as a person. He was always there if I needed a true friend to talk to. Those of us who got to work with Mike were truly blessed. My thoughts and prayers are with Grace, his daughter, and his cherished granddaughter.

He said instead of paying him, just send a donation to Santa who works with Friends of Diabled Adults and Children. He had such a generous heart. My heart goes out to our friends at Capital Benefits and his loving family. God Bless you.

My heart goes out to the family of Mike Kavanaugh at his passing. I was shocked and saddened to learn of his death when I turned on my radio to hear him. What a fine, talented, caring person he was. I will so miss hearing from him. I have been listening to Mike for several years. I am a grown man but cried when I heard the news this morning. My family says on Sunday morning "leave Jeff alone he is listening to Mike". He was an extended part of my family to many. I pray for Grace and his family. I learned so much from Mike and owe it to him as why I have prepared financially for my family. Mike you will be missed by me !!!!
  • A great loss
A kind friend with a gentle heart. Mike, I'm thankful our paths crossed in this big world. You had a passion for the truth in a time when so many tell lies. And yet, you never let the often dark reality of this world change your hopeful and always optimistic heart. I have lost a dear friend but I'm so, so very thankful for the time we had!
  • Mikey
I began to call Kavanagh "Mikey" 12 years ago - on a day that we were covering a significant decline on Wall Street. I was looking to get an interview that no one wanted to do -- when the thought occurred to us (reminiscent of the old Life Cereal Ad) -- Lets Ask Mikey! (who happened to be away that day) Well, my co-anchor put on his financial planner hat, did the interview with me and we again had the "information on first".

I am devastated by his passing and will sorely miss my colleague and friend. I join all of you in extreme sadness this morning. Lisa Campbell (Mike's co-anchor, Atlanta's Evening News)

  • Mike's passing
I will very much miss Mike's intelligence, compassion, humanity, and humor every Sunday morning----but that's minimal compared to the loss his family will feel every day.

Mike was a founding member of the board of directors of the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. His contributions, financial and otherwise, helped us build the organization. The board and our memebership send our love, positive thoughts, and prayers to his family.
  • Mike Kavanagh
My most sincere condolences to Mr Kavanagh's family. It was a true pleasure to listen to him on WSB.
  • Memories of Mike Cavanaugh
As a long time listener of Mike’s “Money Matters” show on Sunday mornings, I will truly miss his expertise and caring for each and every investor with whom he spoke on his Sunday show. He was a friend across the airwaves. Mike set such a good example of what is important in life. A sub-heading for his money show could have been “People Matter.” He understood the context of money and financial security in our lives. In conveying his years of knowledge of investing he saw money as a tool to be managed to bring people financial security with the SWAN portfolio—Sleep-Well-At- Night. He cautioned each investor to understand her or his level of risk and to practice frugality to reach financial security. Mike invited a wide array of guests to his show to share knowledge with his listeners. Anyone with valuable information was welcome to his show from stock market experts to investments experts, a school teacher, and tax experts.
Mike will always be with us in memory with his legacy of assisting people to work toward a better life. God endows each of us with gifts to share with others and enrich other people’s lives. Mike served God with his talents. I wish his family well and send my condolences to his family and the WSB Radio staff.

  • Mike K
My breath was taken away this morning with the news of Mike's passing. He was such a POSITIVE voice at time when it is direly needed. I looked forward to listening to him each Sunday so that I could get true and honest assessment of financial times. He was a very bright spot and he will trully be missed. God Bless his family and friends. Rest In Peace, Mike!
  • Mike
In the mid 80's I had the honor to work with Mike at WCNN. Although we were the same age I always benefited from his inate wisdom. He was a delightful and intelligent man and the world is a lesser place today for his passing.
  • Mike

  • Will Miss Mike Very Much!
I'm a long time listener to WSB radio and Mike was one of my favorites both as a news anchor and my favorite talk show "Money Matters".

As with Mike I am a collector of antique radios and have over 27 in my collection which I have restored. Last year Mike spoke about the history of WSB at out winder SARS (Southeast Antique Radio Society) swap meet. His passion for the history of radio and the preservation of radio artifacts must carried on!
  • Mke Kavanagh
Our deepest condolences to the Kavanagh family. Mike was a true professional who also helped us, by confirming what our planner told us. He will be sorely missed on the air and all of Atlanta mourns the passing of him. God Bless the Kavanagh family.
  • The Death of Mike Kavanagh
It is certainly a moment to stop and do just as Mike Kavanagh so often spoke about,"having an attitude of gratitude," that is so true. I am thankful too have been able to have listened to Mr. Kavanagh over the years. His free advice was great. He served a great need and while I was never in his physical presence spiritually his presence will always be near. Heartful sympathy to his family.
  • mike kavangh
Ugh. this is so sad. He was a great guy. I wrote an endorsement for his book. We started in college radio together at Umass. he got me one4 of my ebst jobs in washignton dc by scheduling me in when he was in charge when the boss was on leave, and that was to repay me for an earlier job that I had helped him to get years earlier. Mike paid back - financially, and personally. He always used to talk about Grace and his daughter. they were lucky to have him. he was just such a solid jnrlst and person. God bless him.
  • His voice will be missed !
Over the years I have always enjoyed listening to Mike ... And when I turned on the radio this Sunday a.m. I heard the news of his passing.... it was like a close friend has passed and I felt so sad. Then his voice came on and it was interviewing Santa Clause from last week or so.... Then sitting here with tears in my eyes I realized that Mike would have said.... death will come to all of us, live your life to the fullest with that thought in mind.
God Bless his family and prayers to them.. John
  • Mike K
God Bless you Mike. You are missed already. Thank you for the many years of kind and wise advice. My Sunday morning workshop sessions will echo with silence of your warm and reassuring guidance. Sleep well. - Doug
  • Mike Kavanagh
I always began my Sundays with Mike's financial advice and was shocked and saddened this morning when I logged on to the computer. I don't know how they will ever replace him, he was one of a kind. God bless him and his family.
  • You will be Missed.
I always thanked and appreciated Mike for hosting his Money Matters Show every Sunday on WSB when I ever called into his show to do alittle "financial sparring" on the subject of Stock Market Timing. His patience with me was that of an older mentor to a young apprentice. I enjoyed chatting with him even when I couldn't get on Air as he always took my call off-Air after the show on his office phone. They sometimes say the Stock Market is a Zero Sum Game where one person's loss is another person's gain. Well today, we all lost something very, very Special. With condolences to his Family; God bless you Mike. You will be missed.
  • Sad News
I looked forward to Mike's Sunday show and I only met him once when he did a free financial review for me. He put me on the right financial path which I will always appreciate - something I probably wouldn't have done if not for his show. I could tell that he was a man of integrity, high ethics and morals and will be missed for there are so few that give back like he did. Condolances to his family.
  • Mike K
My wife and I spent an hourr with Mike last week. He was genuine. A good man. We have lost a friend.
  • Mike's comments were prescient
Listening to the rebroadcast of the Santa show today, the comments Mike made around 9:37AM were rang so true. He was talking about being alive and enjoying family, kids, grandkids, and all the important things during this financial storm. He sounded like he meant it, and he sounded like he acted upon it. Like so many others, I feel like I have lost a good friend today. I will miss you, Mike.
  • Feeling of shock and sadness
I have been a long-time listener to WSB Radio and a very recent listener to Mike Cavanagh's Money Matters show. I just turned on the radio and was shocked to hear the sudden passing of Mike. My heartfelt sympathies and condolences to Mike's family during these difficult times. May his noble soul rest in peace.
  • Mike Kavanagh
Mike will be greatly missed for so many reasons. To his listening audiance he was the calming voice of wisdom that we needed to put things into perspective for us. He always instilled hope in any situation we were in. I think that today he would tell us that this is a good example why we should live as though we will be on this earth another 50 years AND as though this was our last day. Do our best to be prepared for the unexpected; it can come at any time.
I am so thankful for the many years of listening to such sound advice.
May God comfort his family through their loss.
  • what a loss, what a guy
at 26 my wife and I visited Mike Cavanaugh at his office regarding our investments. aside from the financial advice, which he did not charge for, I vividly remember 2 things. One, he said that we were the youngest couple ever to come through his door, and 2, all his hard work was dedicated to his granddaughter which was obviously one of his greatest sources of pride. Thank you Mike for all your guidance and may your family know that his entire atlanta family mourns with you.
  • Mike Kavanagh
My sincere condolences to Mike's family and friends. I was very shocked and saddened to hear of his passing on the radio this morning. I will greatly miss Mike's sound financial advice but, more importantly, I will miss listening to his wonderful, distinctive radio voice, which was so soothing to hear every Sunday morning. He was such a joy to listen to and I took for granted being able to tune the dial to 750am and be assured to hear his familiar voice with "Money Matters". He made the dry topic of finance anything but dry and he inspired me to take more of an interest in financial matters. Mike was a "true" gentleman who will be sorely missed. May God bless him and may he rest in peace. Mike truly made the world a much better place for having been in it. He will be greatly missed and radio will never be the same.
  • Mike's passing
How lovely it is to hear in a story about how much a man loved his wife and family. And how sad to lose the love of your life at the holidays. Please know we have you in our prayers and you will smile again -- promise. It takes a while but the good memories will come shining through.
Your are in our hearts -- your sweet grand daughter will help you to have a wonderful holiday season.
    Always,
    The Boss Family

  • Mike
The world is a little colder today without Mike. He was the best of the best, in every way. Deepest sympathy to his family and those in his audience who loved him like family.
  • Always a Positive Influence
I listened to Money Matters every now and again and it was not just Mike's calm on-air presence that I enjoyed, but also his thorough answers and polite dealing with callers.

As a listener to the program, it was obvious he considered each caller to be important and it was refreshing to listen to his program and to learn something new.

I will his show and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

WSB Radio and all of the metro Atlanta area lost a trusted friend in Mike. He will certainly be missed by this loyal WBS listener.

I am so very sad to turn on the radio this AM to listen to my favorite program with Mike Kavanaugh and learn of his passing. Who else can do the wonderful job he did with such joy and caring for others? He has left a huge void in all our lives.
