Domestic Dispute Ends With Life Support

(WSB Radio) A Cherokee  County woman is on life support and her boyfriend is in jail following a domestic dispute on New Year's Eve.

47 year old Julia Shaw, of Ball Ground, sustained a fractured skull and severe internal injuries from the incident, which investigators believe began at one location and ended on McClure Street, in Cherokee County.

Deputies were called to that location, "and found the victim laying in the roadway," says Sheriff's Sergeant Jay Baker, "she had quite a bit of blood on her.  The witnesses there had given us information that a male had been with her earlier and he had also had blood on him and that he was seen leaving the scene."

After identifying the victim, investigators determined the man was 46 year old Robert Phillips, of Jasper, who is Shaw's longtime boyfriend.

Investigators don't know where Shaw was beaten up, but they don't believe it was where they discovered her.

"We think this may have occurred at another location," Baker tells WSB, "the majority of the injuries. So we're asking anyone who knows these two individuals if they were with them earlier. Because it is New Year's Eve and maybe they were in a fight somewhere. We don't know."

Baker says the couple has a history of violence and Phillips has been jailed before.  Deputies used an old mug shot and witnesses positively identified him as the man seen standing over Shaw on McClure Street.

Phillips was arrested at his home a few hours later.

He's been charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault and criminal attempt to murder.  Those charges could change pending Shaw's condition.

She's on life support at North Fulton Hospital.

What others are saying

  • Done That
The fear of leaving is a nearly universal side effect of abuse. I don't understand it, even though I was there once myself. It took everything I had, plus the help of family, to leave. That was nearly thirty years ago. I still don't understand why I stayed as long as I did, through countless beatings and various forms of abuse. My Mom was there for me, and she didn't give up. When I finally decided I was ready to leave, she helped me, even though I didn't leave the many times she pushed me to leave. She never gave up on me.
  • And...
Sound slike just another battered woman who stays with the guy until he kills her. If he wasn't in jail, she would probably go right back to him IF she gets out the hospital, which being on life support isn't looking likely anytime soon. I feel really bad for battered women ONCE, after that they kind get what you would expect for going back.
