Gun Applications Rise Almost 80%
ATLANTA (AP) Georgia officials say there has been a significant increase in the number of gun permit applications in 2008 compared with the previous year.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reports that there were more than 121,000 firearm applications submitted in 2008. That's up almost 80 percent from the roughly 68,000 permit applications in 2007.
The reasons for the increase vary. Some residents were worried it may become harder to get a gun during the Obama administration. Others said they just want to be able to protect their families, especially in high-crime areas.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the numbers in Georgia are in line with other increases across the country.

- GREAT!This is GREAT news!!! Buy all you can, I AM!!!
It is our 2nd Amendment Right to own GUNS and it shall not be INFRINGED!
Keep it up and please help pass HB-615 in Georgia!

- If the Come Around My House...BANG!Yep..got myself a .38 special. Cops did not make it in time for one of my neighbors. The gang got away! Will rely on myself -- can't rely on the government or the courts!
- Georgia Carry.orgYou do NOT have to have a permit to own a gun in Georgia, You must have one to carry on your person openly or concealed.
GO to WWW.GEORGIACARRY.ORG for more valuable info. - Get a license!!!!Everyone who is eligible should get a Firearm License so they can carry a concealed weapon. The process is super-easy and costs around $20.00. Get more info at georgiapacking.org.
If you don't protect yourself, who will? - guns/permitsYou do not have to have a permit to have a gun in GA, but to carry concealed, you do! Depending on the county you live in, depends on the turn around time. Fulton I believe even gives you a temp permit until your perm. permit arrives. Also, for those who are considering purchasing a gun, take several classes and shoot weekly! You are no good with a gun if you do not know how to use it!!
- We were those people....My boyfriend and I were afraid Obama would take them out of our hands within the year... so we went and "stocked" up so to say. Every time there is a gun show in town, we get extra ammo. Sad to say, but a lot of people are afraid of what Obama has up his sleeve with gun regulations. Keep the guns in the hands of the citizens, not the criminals! I carry because I don't want to be a victim.
- SAD, BUT SHIRLEY FRANKLIN WON'T PROVIDE SAFETYThis old lady even went through firing training!! Not a bad shot now -- especially with a laser beam!!
- Great news!I think it's awesome that more folks are getting weapons and firearms licenses. Time to put guns in the hands of the good guys!
- Gun applicationsIt is hard to find certain kinds/brands/calibers of ammunition in area stores. It is difficult if not impossible to find certain firearms, especially handguns. That is because most Americans are against firearms ownership as is commonly reported in the media. Firearms permit applications are going way up. That is because most Americans are against the private ownership of firearms as is commonly reported on the 6 o'clock news.
- Increasing firearms ownership"The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the numbers in Georgia are in line with other increases across the country."
When the Georgia Concealed carry Law was passed, Cynthia Tucker wrote on the editorial page of the Journal Constitution that "there will be blood running in the streets."
The Journal Constitution has been WRONG about EVERY aspect regarding firearms ownership. They have editorialized against the Second Amendment of the Constitution. They have out right LIED about the whole issue.
It is gratifying to see the results of their "quality" editorializing by the absolute most rabid socialist editor working for any newspaper in the United States today. The paper is failing. It has been forced to stop delivery in many most outside of the city. To that I say GOOD RIDDANCE and it couldnt happen to a more deserving bunch!! - gunsMaybe that will send congress a message.
- Gun ApplicationsAfter the comments BO made about gun owners, I would understand why people would be afraid of losing their rights
- Requirements...A gun permit is not required to own a gun in Georgia, or any other state. This story is misleading. The only thing you need a permit for is carrying one in public.
- Gun Permits or Concealed Weapons Permits?I was under the impression that in Georgia one is not required to have a permit to own a firearm, but is required to have a CWP to carry one in a concealed fashion. Are the permits referenced in this article CWPs, or does Georgia require firearms to be registered with the state?
- Gun permit applicationsJust a correction that these numbers are not for guns themselves, but what in Georgia is called a "Georgia Firearms License" or GFL. The term is a bit misleading, as a license is not required to purchase any firearm in Georgia.
Instead, the GFL is a "permit" enabling the person who obtains it to carry a firearm--openly or concealed--in various locations within Georgia.
Again, as the AJC and WSB have been reporting similarly, these applications are NOT for the guns themselves. - Makes SenseYou have to take means to protect yourself and your famile. The Police are there to fill out the paper work after a crime. Not their fault, just to way it is. And when home invasions are becoming the norm, a gun is the only means to protect yourself.
- PermitsIt is about time the people of Georgia are finally Waking up and are ready to take Matters in to their own hands if needed. With all of the cut-backs in the Police and Fire departments, and a rise in crime, you are wise to have a gun and KNOW HOW TO USE IT!
