New CRCT Requirements?
(WSB Radio State Capitol Bureau) A state lawmaker wants to add first and second grades to the list of those required to pass the CRCT in order to be promoted to the next grade. Currently only third, fifth, and eighth graders are required to pass it.
Rep. Rick Austin (R-Demorest), a college biology professor, says first and second graders currently take the test but aren't required to pass it to move on.
"In many cases children that have had significant hurdles to overcome are going to find themselves so far behind, that it's going to be very difficult for them to ever get their feet back up underneath them to do the work in the forthcoming years," he tells WSB's Sandra Parrish.
HB 501 would also penalize schools that socially promote students who fail the test by withholding funding. He says right now schools aren't required to report how many students fail the test in the spring or in the mandatory retest . They would be required to do so under the bill as well as report how many of those students are promoted anyway
"We've got a system that we say we're going to evaluate and assess our children, and then we turn right around and over 80 percent of them we're not holding accountable," he says.
Austin is also sponsoring HB 503 called the "Teacher Access to Resources Act," that would require any textbook used by a public school in Georgia meet at least 80 percent of the competencies and curriculum requirements established by the state Board of Education. It will also require the State Board of Education to establish a comprehensive website to provide teachers access to state standards and teaching resources.
What others are saying
- Don't agreeI do not agree that the CRCT is valid. All students are not good test takers. A child may do well all during the year and fail to pass an exam promoted by the system. This is not fair to the child and it discourages and intimedates the child. I think this decision needs to be revisited.
- TestingAs a high school teacher I think the public needs to be aware that this is a serious problem. Every Fall 1/3 or more of our incoming students actually failed to pass the CRCT. They could not do 8th Grade level work - yet they were socially advanced to the 9th Grade! This is no joke! Then when they reach 17 years of age and are still in the 9th or 10th Grade they drop out. Why won't the state address this? I don't know, but it is destroying our schools.
- No more testsTests show what one child does on one day. It is a poor measurement tool for the whole child. Please take your idea back to Demorest and institute in your own school district first. Let us know how that works for you.
- I agreeI've noticed that at least 3 out of 10 young folks today, cannot read or do basic math. Back in the 60's and 70's was it this bad? When reading they cannot pronounce larger words, and seem to have no understanding of phonics. Sending children to these government institutions to learn is the equivalent of child abues.
- Government MoronsHey, I have an idea. The school thing is not working so lets leave things as is and demand more test. More test will make people learn even if we do not teach. Education leaders are dumb as sticks. Education worked extremely well prior to the 80's. Then the Government and even worse the teachers UNION of buffoons decided to change everything. If Johnny can't read, see if the teacher can. Oh, we can't test teachers. That would be as racist as requiring a photo ID to vote.
