(WSB Radio) A bullet-proof vest may have saved a Clayton County police officer's life.

A spokesman said officer Officer Yoland Shumaker is recovering after getting shot twice while working a domestic dispute in Hampton.

Officer Shumaker was shot twice while escorting a woman home. It happened on Pebble Beach Lane in Hampton Friday night, Clayton County police Lt. Rebecca Brown told WSB.

Gerald Lewis Benn, 45, is accused of opening fire and then fleeing the scene. He was arrested later after he was tasered by officers.

He is being held on several charges, including aggravated assualt.
