Move to Restrict Stem Cell Research
ATLANTA (AP) State lawmakers have moved to restrict embryonic stem cell research in Georgia even as President Barack Obama prepares to lift limits on using federal dollars for such work.
A Senate panel was hearing testimony on the measure Monday after a subcommittee rapidly cleared the measure earlier in the day. The bill defines an embryo as a person.
Critics say the bill would criminalize embryonic stem cell research in the state, which has seen a surge in biotech business. But supporters say it would protect human life in its earliest form.
What others are saying
- the point isn't public vs privateOf course there is privately funded stem cell research. But we want the research in our colleges and schools.
Schools receiving federal funding may receive such funding only as a contingency of complying with the state's stem cell rule, whether or not the federal funding is actually for stem cell research.
The state legislature is being irresponsible when it tries to limit stem cell research in the state. I'm not for pork projects, either, but I'd like our state universities to be able to do stem cell research without giving up other funding.
The way politics works: Do what I say or I will take all your funding away. Like it or not, that's the way it is. - Stem CellI can't believe the absurdity of some comments. How can somebody say that doctors should be penalized for bringing babies into the world for people who are without means to support the baby? It is because of people who have no understanding of right and wrong that good legislators have to stand up against immoral legislation such as that of Obama's. May God bless Georgia for doing the right thing!
- Stem CellWhat the government does not want you to know is there are plenty of private firms performing stem cell research. What the government wants us to believe is no one is doing research and they want your tax dollar to fund it. This is another government WASTE project. I am for stem cell research, but only in the private sector. T he government does not need to get involved at all!

- STEM CELLI GUESS NO ONE HAS A LOVED ONE WITH ANY TYPE OF DISEASE THAT CAN BE HELPED BY STEM CELL DEVELOPMENT. I HAVE A MOM WITH PARKINSON'S AND THEY SAY IT CAN BE HELPED BY STEM CELL RESEARCH. SO PLEASE CHECK INTO HELPING THESE PITYFUL PEOPLE WITH THIS RESEARCH.
- Stem cell researchStem cell research is something the Georgia Legislature should not be making laws for, or against. A subject the Legislature has no knowledge of or expertise in to make a good decision. Another action the Legislature shows how they are wasting taxpayers time and money. What a joke. As for embryo transplant, lets make strong laws against the Doctors bad decision when family planning is concerned. Maybe the Doctor should support all the kids he is helping being born into this world when it is obvious that the family does not have a means of financial support.
