Super Speeder Law Passes

(WSB Radio State Capitol Bureau)  A bill to impose super fines on super speeders is headed to the Governor Perdue's desk.

The measure, which Perdue has pushed for three years, would charge an additional $200 in fines to those caught going 75 mph on two-lane roads and 85 mph and over on four lane ones.

The measure received final passage in the State Senate where Sen. Bill Heath (R-Bremen) says Georgia has a reputation for speeders on its roads.

"Georgia is known as a place where you can make up time when you're traveling to and from Florida for example. As you travel through Georgia you can pick the speed up a little bit and get by with it," he says.

Heath says some $23 million a year is expected to be generated from the increase in fine with all the money slated to go to fund Georgia's trauma care network.

What others are saying

  • The way it should be....
Yeah, why don't we just ban everything, including breathing, that would solve a lot of problems wouldn't it?
My take, driving should work like this-

You take your driving test every two years, it costs $10. The test is two halves. First half is written. The questions are common sense. The second half is on a track. If you score 70-79 percent, you get a "C" license, and are allowed only on surface streets. "C" drivers are only allowed to go the speed limit and said car will have a blue tag. Score 80-89, you get a "B" license, and are allowed to exceed the speed limit on surface streets 15mph, and you are allowed the speed limit on the interstate, and the car gets a green tag. Score 90-99, you get an "A" license, and you are allowed 25+mph on all roads. Score 100, you get a "Pro" license, and you are allowed double the posted speed limit, and your car gets a black tag, and you are allowed in at the annual policeman's ball, and they offer you a teaching job at the police test track for doing so well. That's the way it should be.
  • "Superspeeder" should be a compliment
There are a number of reasonable arguments for speed limits in general and particular limits in specific, none applicable to this legislation.

Millions of Atlantans prove daily that 30mph (and more) over the posted limit is quite safe per mile driven. Dramatically simplifying the matter, if in fact "safety" is the objective here the social engineers will get further faster by improving driving skills through mandatory continuing driving education with a focus on high speed driving and lane dicipline.

Men with guns trying to slow the other 98% of us down is a spectacularly unsafe "all-in" gamble unjustified by public safety or budget holes.

Speed does NOT kill, rapid deceleration due to contact with stationary objects does - so stop hitting things Homer!
  • speeders
speed would not be a problem if the proverbial few did not ruin it for all the rest by weaving in and out of traffic and tailgating slower drivers. And no, it's not just in the left lane. People tailgate me in other lanes, too. Furthermore, not all of us drive super-charged turbo cars. Good law. Let's ban cell phones on the road next.
  • political super speeders
I wonder how many of our government officials, especially the ones involved in passing this legislation, are super speeders...
  • Bremen is a godam speed trap I suppose Mr.Heath sees a little more revenue
  • Super speeder
I wont let this go. I plan on fighting to repeal this. Just another revenue generator. If economic times were better and taxes were filling the coffers, this would not be law!
  • Speeders unite!
This is nothing more than another revenue generator as someone else here has suggested. I don't have a problem with people doing the speed limit, as long as they stay in the right lane. Going 55 on 75, 85 or 285 is like a license to die. Let me go 80 in the left lane with my V-1 radar detector and we'll get along just great!
  • Super Speeders
Okay, for you Boortz fans, here's my expanded answer to his ridiculous argument in favor of a higher speed limit and against the super speeder law.

Boortz argues that the current speed limit is dangerous because it causes people to go around those who are going the speed limit because the current speed limit is too slow.

What makes him or anyone else think that if the current speed limit were to be raised, say, fifteen miles an hour, that people wouldn't see THAT speed as being too slow and will simply speed up ANOTHER fifteen miles an hour to get around those who are doing 70 mph? Huh?

Can anyone tell me how raising the speed limit another fifteen miles per hour is going to solve all our traffic and driving problems? The fact is, it won't. Pure and simple. The nutjobs out on the road, and there are MANY, will NEVER be satisfied with driving the speed limit regardless of what that speed limit is. These are people who are prone to doing what they damn well please in life, regardless of who they have to run over to do it. These are idiots who will be unsafe at any speed, and most of all, will NEVER obey the posted speed limit because they think laws don't apply to them.

That is why I disagree with raising the speed limit from where it is now, because then we will have the idiots on the road doing 110 miles an hour instead of just 70 to 80 which is bad enough considering most of them are lousy drivers anyway.

Hope you Boortz supporters can understand why his thinking is fuzzy on this. Boortz thinks he knows it all, but he doesn't. And just remember, most of all, he's simply a tool of the owners at WSB, and we all know who they are.......right? Educate yourselves folks. It's our only hope.
  • Super Speeder Law Passed...
Okay Larry is a Tool for that Nancy little comment and Tim is a tool for that stupid comment about motorcycles... No Tim it only applies to SUVs, Light Passenger Cars, Light and Heavy Trucks, and Clown Cars... What an @$$tard...
  • Tim's Question Answered
No, Tim. The law applies to the riders.
  • Super Speeder Law
You know, I'm of two minds here: On one hand, I understand the bs involved in yet another law that appears to be just an income generator and how some think the speed limit of 55 mph is too low. On the other hand, Atlanta has very dangerous drivers who drive in great excess of the posted speed limit, many of whom are unlicensed and many of whom simply flout their nose at any speed limit regardless of what it would be.

Who remembers Freaknik where out of state blacks were flying into downtown Atlanta well over 100 mph? Insanity.

I have driven in the Alanta metro area for over 26 years and have NEVER been pulled over, received a speeding ticket or a moving traffic violation, or been involved in an accident. That hasn't occurred by accident, either. I have driven the speed limit (or not over 5 miles over the posted speed limit), obeyed traffic laws, and have driven defensively (meaning I keep multiple car lengths between my car and the cars in front and behind), and all of that has paid off. I brag because it's worth bragging about and it makes sense, most of all.

We have so many things to be concerned about. I do not see the harm in having the excessive speeders fined more than others. Maybe I will change my mind over time if someone can convince me that I am simply being a tool of the fedgov, I don't know. I certainly am not in favor of more laws, but I am also tired of idiots out on the road making it more dangerous for those of us who take driving seriously.

I do not like the police, and one of the ways I avoid any contact with these morons is that I obey the traffic laws so that I don't get pulled over by one of them. It's not as if it would kill someone to just drive the speed limit.
  • Lovely
Oh great... More of a reason why folks will slam their brakes on the interstate each time they see a cop.
  • super speeder
    does this apply to motorcycles?
  • Super Speeder Law Passed
For those that are against this law stop and think! It might be your child or loved one that is saved if others slow down because of this law.
  • Super Speeders
If Law Enforcement were out there more, we wouldn't have to consider this bill, would we?
  • Super Speeders Crock
Why 20 mph over on a 2 lane road, but only 15 mph over on a 4 lane? What a pile of manure.
  • Super Speeder Law Passed...
You know I use to love this State because the govt. didn't stick it's fingers in everything. Well that's now changed. They just want more money people! Oh and Johnny Nam you're a Tool...
  • Super speeders
    About time !!
  • Speed
I guess this will be followed up with a massive budget building speed trap campaign by the State Patrol over Memorial Day weekend.
  • Another Tax
Just another way to raise taxes. That's it boys, keep nailing people......
  • super?
If you're going 80mph around atlanta you will get run over. I'm sure this law is for everyones safety. Oops, nevermind, I just read the last sentence.
  • Another tax hike.
What's wrong with going 75 MPH?
It's just another law made to generate cash.
  • Show some restraint
Imagin, hard times. She can't miss another payment, they'll take her house. He pulls her over, super speeder. She has a gun in her purse.
  • Yikes
Looks like I'd better slow down.
  • Hope..
Hope Bill Heath doesn't get re-elected.
