Perdue Says 'No' to Marta
ATLANTA (AP) -- Gov. Sonny Perdue's staff has met with MARTA officials to try to solve the transit system's funding problems.
But the governor suggested Tuesday that it was unlikely he would heed MARTA's call for a special session to deal with transportation issues.
He said ``special sessions are something we shy away from. We will do our best not to call a special session.''
MARTA is considering cutting services as it grapples with a $24 million budget shortfall.
The system's officials asked legislators to pass a bill allowing them to tap into reserves, but lawmakers never approved the changes.

What others are saying
- Get the facts.,Marta is NOT asking for money, just the flexibility to use the funds they have in different ways! Our local politicians who are complaining loudly are really the blame way back when by not being able to agree on a comprehensive metropolitan transit plan instead of the hodge podge of systems we have now.
- GOODNo more gov't Handouts...I don't care if they shut Marta Down completely. Maybe a private industry can come in and run it properly and actually make a profit.
- State of GA does not support AtlantaMARTA and the City of Atlanta need a major PR overhaul. The rest of the state views the city as one big failed social program and I do not blame them for not wanting to throw more money down the sink hole. True or not, it is the perception that exists.
- Boo HooHey Michael,
Why not ask for a Government bailout for yourself. You have failed to see the problem. The Government needs to stay out of private industry. Marta has been and is mismanaged and does not deserve a hand-out as you think is appropriate. Another sad liberal case. I want the Government out of my life not in it! WAKE UP!!! - Perdue Says NoIf this is the case them Marta needs to do it has to to help with it's budget problems. If it means cutting service then it should be done & then public can go scream at Perdue & Legislators for not taking care of this. Again people, this is your Goverment At Work For You.
- Poor Marta...It is kind of amazing when you think about it. We are coming through a period in history when gasoline was $4.00++ a gallon, and Marta ridership was through the roof and Marta loses HUGE amounts of money??? A lot of questions need to be answered here before Marta starts getting any "bailouts" from us the taxpayers!!
- Just say NO!MARTA should do what they usually do: raise the rates to drive more folks away. Some day grownups will be able to run the place like a business, have a sale and they will come.
