Arthur Blank: Vick has paid debt to society
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) The owner of the Atlanta Falcons says Michael Vick has paid his debt to society and merits a second chance.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank who once gave Vick a $130 million contract said Wednesday that the quarterback is taking positive steps by wanting to work with humane societies and making other changes in his life.
Vick left a federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan. Wednesday morning after serving most of a 23-month sentence for involvement in a dogfighting ring. Blank, whose team still owns the player's contractual rights, said he has been in written communication with Vick since the sentence began.
``There's no question Michael's paid his debt to society, obviously,'' Blank said during a break at the NFL owners' meetings in South Florida.

What others are saying
- I agree he should be given a 2nd chance... but if he gets another NFL position it should be at entry level player pay and only raised by performance on the field and obedience to the law off the field.
- Vick is nothing but a self centered self loving PUNK! He has no respect for anybody or any animal,or thing. Its not only the killing of the dogs, but its also the way he handled it when caught. Lying to you, me, and everyone, and cared less about it. He has lied his way thru life and always will. Just like OJ. A lying self centered punk. You think Vick gives a Rats ass about you or anyone? How about the punks he ran with. You dont change a life style that took years to create. Vick has a long ways to go yet. I wish him the best. I hope he does find internal peace and love. I know I would not want to be in his brain for 1 sec. My God, if the Falcons take him back, I will NEVER watch or go to another Falcons game. They are finally playing Football as a team. When Vick was with them, it was every Man for himself. Last thing in the world they need is that Man back on their team.
- Tom's commentAmen, Tom. Very well said.
- Vick is Scum and so are those who support himDon't be too hard on ole' Tom you all. He can't help it. I would say what you are Tom but I am sure my comments would be withheld, so you'll just have to imagine what I am calling you.
He spends his life sitting in a chair watching Africans pass a ball back and forth to each other and dribble a ball down the field or run with a ball down the field or kick a ball down the field....ad nauseum. Tom isn't smart enough or talented enough to amuse himself without the help of some athletic Africans. Right Tom?
Tom wouldn't know what to do on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday afternoon or Fall/Winter evening if he couldn't watch some Africans playing some kind of ball.
Poor Tom. He's more to be pitied than censored. - TomYeah, comparing a dog to an insect is pretty ridiculous. You got one thing right. Either you get it or you don't. You obviously fall into the don't get it crowd.
As far as being "branded unfairly", I remember a time when kids could look up to sports stars as role models. With all the drug abuse and violence associated with professional sports these days, I'm not even sure I want my kids watching it. Michael Vick not only disgraced himself, he disgraced the NFL. And I promise you, any remorse he shows is for the loss of his multimillion dollar contract and not for the pain he inflicted on those poor animals. - RobI murdered an ant today. Actually, several ants. Today I just stepped on them, but in the past I've definitely killed them in much more creative, gruesome ways.
Sound ridiculous? Of course, because no one cares about ants. People care about dogs because they're cute, they're domesticated, they're playful....but when it all comes down to it, they're still just animals.
What Vick did was illegal, and for that he deserved punishment. But anyone who actually thinks his acts are unforgivable is really, really overreacting. The victims were just dogs, and when it all comes down to it- dogs, though playful and cute, aren't on any higher level than any other animals.
It's my opinion that Vick has paid his debt to society, and then some. In an era where players get trouble almost every day for acts way worse than dogfighting, he will be branded unfairly as one of the bigger villains. I wish him all the best- maybe someday he can make it back onto the field. - falconsI remember the news conference the day Vick signed that 130 million contract. Blank said he wanted to make sure the only way Vick left Atlanta would be in a pine box. Boy, was he DEAD wrong!!!
- Debt paid?Let us not forget that Vick not only supported killing dogs in the ring, but when they didn't perform Vick killed them in horrible, unforgivable ways. Michael Vick murdered these poor animals by holding them under water, electrocution, and by physically slamming one to the ground until he was dead. Michael Vick, can you bring those dogs back to life? Can you erase the pain you caused them? No. It's done and dead is dead. Debt to society paid? Hardly. You can't undo murder. However, looks like the usual PR b.s. will pay off. I'm sure he'll be playing for the falcons again in no time. But hey, it's the football that's important, right? Those animals lives don't matter. They were doomed from birth. So who cares right? I'm sure the only ones who might remember those dogs are the ones who valued their lives the least. So who cares right? I do. Enjoy your football.
- Debt Paid in FullVick not only has paid his debt in full but with extra, extra taxes... I initially agreed with Vick's prosecution, but was totally against the severe punishment. In our society we are sending people to extended prison terms for killing dogs, but not for killing humans and DUI's are a prime example of this. How about Ray Lewis who directly or indirectly was involved in the death of that man in Buckhead, but yet was not sentenced to prison. Something is really wrong with out priorities in this Country.
- Vick Has Not Paid DebtSpeak for yourself Arthur Blank. You may think he merits a "second chance" in civilized society but there are a lot of people who don't agree with that sentiment.
But let's assume that I'm in the minority and there will be someone out there who will give him a second chance. Who wants to take bets on how long it will take Vick to mess up again?
Heh heh. Just like OJ Simpson who just couldn't seem to stay out of trouble, I suspect Vick will have a similar course in life.
It's hard to get the thug out of 'ya.
