Atlanta Rapper Murdered in L.A.
(WSB Radio) An up and coming Atlanta rapper has been shot and killed at a Los Angeles mall.
Roderick Burton, otherwise known as Dolla, was gunned down while waiting at a valet stand near the Beverly Center.
"LAX airport was able to help us identify and detain a person that resembled a person at the scene," says Los Angeles Police Officer Ronald Crump. Police say the suspect had a handgun stuck in his waistband.
A police officer says the victim and gunman had been arguing before the shooting.
The suspect remains in custody.
Dolla was in Los Angeles to record his first album. He worked on the 2006 dance film ``Step Up'' and recently cut a pair of singles with Akon: ``Like This'' and ``She So Fine.''
What others are saying
- insultsDivine, you could make your points without the insults against Soothsayer. While I disagree with him on the issue we have not resorted to calling each other, and others, names. At least I don't remember doing so and am pretty sure I'm correct on that.
No time to respond further but will follow up on this. - soothsayer and othersDo not listen to this ignorant person, the Soothsayer. This individual is one of the reasons that America is falling further in further behind of other leading nations. Total Ignorance is more harmful than rap music could ever be. Remember Soothsayer, rap music does not kill people ignorant people like you with guns and weapons kill people. Since we are talking about music let's talk about how many people commit suicide and overdose on pills that listens to rock and alternative music. Based on your thoughts, I should believe that most rock and alternative musicians are depressed drug addicts. That young girls who listen to this music are going to do illegal drugs and have sex with everybody because they are high on coke and ecstasy and they believe wearing less clothes is the key to success. Which granted must of them are? However, I do not know any of them personally and would have to speak about each one individually to determine if this is the case. It is called research. Research that you probably would not know where to begin to start because you are obviously ignorant. Research that I could conduct, but it is of no social importance. For example, Ice cream sales correlate with an increase of murders. Soothsayer is probably saying, Oh so when ice cream sales are high then murder rates will be high.. No dummy, just like you think rap music is the source of violence in the black community. Murder rates increased at the same time ice cream sales increased because of the summer and more people being out and about. Your argument is invalid and not sound. Furthermore it makes you look ridiculous. But that is exactly what you are going for. I bet you post ignorant comments all over the internet.
I meet people like the soothsayer all the time. To make up for their lack of education and fear of strong healthy black people, It makes ignorant statements to piss off people. This is the only way that they can make people mad. A coward and a fool. That is what it is.
So when you die, we will be glad that there is one less ignorant person off the internet. Because we all know that you are not bold enough and do not believe the stuff you are saying to be able to say in the streets where the real world is. If you are lets see you do it. And not at a KKK rally either. Do they still exist?
So we all can say:
Thank you lord, one ignorant person gone!!!! Wayyy to many ignorant people to go!
P.S. You think too much. Try reading a children's book it is easier for you small brain to absorb.
LOL - PEACE - soothsayertouche' soothsayer, touche'. good points made, look, i know that here are some issues with the culture of rap, not necessarily the music. but i think that for a lot of these kids growing up, its all they have. i listen to rock and country, and other types of music, and its not all about responsibility either. but the people who listen to that are by and large brought up in homes that instill values in their children, and they generally lead decent lives. kids at that impressionable age need discipline and guidance and they arent getting it in a lot of black households. truth hurts sometimes, and so do lies. thanks for the thought-provoking words, and lets each of us agree to do what we can to make the world better and always protect the liberties that we have that allow us to go at each other like this.
respectfully,
chuck - Yeah BUTThe POS that shot him no doubt was hooked up into the gangster lifestyle.
Evidenced by the fact the dumba$$ was caught within an hour at LAX with a handgun in his waistband....great job TSA! - RAPRAP MUSIC DOESNT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH WHAT HAPPEND TO HIM ITS WAS OVER A FEMALE
- Come on chuck....Reading must have not been your specialty in all of those nights of college....:D
As far as my comments, I didn't say that all black people are bad nor did I say that any black people are bad. I said that rap is permeating and killing a generation of black youth. If white kids were running around with AK's killing each other because one side was a Debbie Gibson fan and the other was a Madonna fan...I would be calling them out too.
I said that these rapper gansters who are promoting that trash are bad. It was not an indictment of all black people--just all rap nonsense. For crying out loud, we have eminem and vanilla ice!
It is a toxic music, a toxic lifestyle, and a waste of valuable time on this planet to listen to, sell, or make that nonsense. It is killing people (rappers) who have little redeeming qualities for society and filling up prisons with people who think their only recourse in life is to become a ganster-drug dealer-cop killer-pimp- whatever.
It isn't the beat or the style of the music...R&B isn't a problem. It is the kill whitey, ride the ho, kill the gangster, pop a cop nonsense that I am talking about.
But I guess you are right and I am wrong. There aren't a world's worth of inner city kids convinced by this music that killing and drug dealing is the way out. There isn't a world's worth of kids that are told education is wrong or not acting your race. There isn't a cemetery full of youth killed by violence largely permeated by this music and lifestyle. Nope, I am all wrong.
Soothsayer - to my criticsDo I wish that he went to college and applied himself to finding a solution to the nation's energy crisis or economic issues? Absolutely. I certainly don't see west coast economists shooting east coast economists because they dissed their derivative in a paper published in a trade magazine.
Am I sorry that I am glad that one more useless POS criminal is off the streets? Nope.
Try sending your child to a public school these days and they are filled with this CRAP. My 10 year old son is coming home talking about how boys his age are talking about being gangsters. Nonsense.
This poison has ruined an entire generation of young men and women by making them think they gotta be gangsters and the girls gotta act like ho's. All these inner city gang warfare that leaves innocent children in the crossfire is laid right at the feet of this music which has spawned an entire generation of black youth to think that if someone makes eye contact with you, you gotta kill them. A bunch of animals. And you people come here crying over their early demise at their own hands.
Sorry, you can cry for him all you want but I won't. He was a promoter of this crap and you know what I lose no sleep over his death any more than I would a drug dealer getting himself shot.
Maybe I am a judgmental bastard and if so, good I enjoy it.
Oh and as for the comment below about drunk drivers....I wish that every single one of them would crash into a tree/wall/each other and eliminate themselves. That comes from losing two good friends because of drunks on the roads and seeing the devastation caused by the selfishness of the other.
That's the truth, if you can't deal with it then that's your issue not mine. - Dolla...Dolla was easily twice as good a rapper as 50 cent.
- Do some research...and you will see that Steve got it right.
- man!!it is easy to see why we will NEVER have an open and honest dialogue on race relations. the way we stereotype people based on the actions of a few is insulting in both directions. As BT said, each of us is responsible for our own actions, and who we are is a result of all the choices we make. I listened to some of the most degrading, violent lyrics when as a youngster, but my parents instilled values in me, and so far my credit's good, i have committed no crime, and i make damn good money as a professional, college educated person. so to lump everyone in together by what they listen to is crazy. For that matter, my sister listened to gangsta rap, and is now a doctor and is engaged to a white professional male. Doesnt look like that culture got to us at all. Just some good beats for those long nights of studying...
- to soothsayerSoothsayer, how old are you? God help us if you're an adult because you have the opinions of someone not yet out their teen years.
You don't know the first thing about this victim other than the fact he raps. If you've managed to develop this laundry list of ideas about him based on that fact alone, that makes you more dangerous than you claim him to be.
Response, that is not a true statement. The only one on this list you can make that arguement about is Suge Knight. So_So_Def doesn't even promote that kind of violence. Calling them black fools make no sense either. Can't be that stupid to build a multi-million dollar business.
Personally, I can't listen to much of it either but to make a blanket statement that all rappers are dumb is silly. - something to think aboutThink about how many people Russell Simmons employs. He is head of Def Jam Records, Phat Farm, co-owner of RUN Athletics, and (with his now I guess ex-wife Kimora) started Baby Phat.
Think about Jay-Z, head of Roc-a-Fella Reocrs. No Jay-Z = no Roc-a-Wear. No Jay-Z = no 40/40 club in NYC.
Then you have Puffy (Puff Daddy/Diddy/Whatever other dumb name he has now). No Puffy = no Sean Jean. No Bad Boy Records. No restaurant chains. (Puffy also has non-rap artists on his label too ya'know).
Think about what you are saying when you say these people have done nothing for the world. I disagree with their messages but this is a business first and foremost and people do what they need to do to make money and keep their business alive.
Think of how empty malls would be without those name brand clothes. Think of all the people who wouldn't have jobs. - rap label heads"Uhhh not to burst your bubble big fellah but the heads of these rap labels by and large are dumb black fools/thugs. "
Prove it. - why dont you do more research? You pointed out 2 labels and expect that to be representative of the entire industry? You could have AT LEAST used Russell Simmons (Head of Def Jam). Instead of being so snotty you could do better research.
Look up the head execs at Arista, Columbia, Virgin, etc. They aren't dumb nor are they black nor are they thugs.
Useless nonsense caused by people listening to their music? What are we? Six? Don't blame the music, each person is responsible for his/her own actions.
Rappers give jobs to many people. When they buy a new car a factory worker keeps his/her job. When they go on trips, hotels make money to employ their staff.
Why is there such contention towards rappers? They contribute to the economy just like CEOs of big firms do, if not MORE. - Another one bites the dust. There are some very good posts on this matter so I have little to add that would not be a repeat of what has been said.
I will say this. Walt, you are misinformed due to your brainwashing by the media. The KKK did not seek to hunt down and murder tens of thousands of blacks. They were a resistance group who's first goal was to resist the federal government and their seizure of power and their implementation of northern yankee will upon the south. Their second goal was to keep whites protected and their society in check. Their third goal was to keep blacks away from whites and keep them down because the federal government was placing them in positions of authority as an insult to southerners. Check your history. The federal government fostered a deep resentment of blacks in the south by placing them above whites just to insult them. The federal government has, ever since, use black people to foster the federal governments growth by fostering this hatred. The federal government moved black people from the "southern" plantation to the "federal" plantation.
It would be the same as if the federal government placed illegal mexicans in a majorative of the postions of the state's government and then dared use to go against the laws these mexican illegals pass.
I bet you are white Walt. What will you do, or your children do, when you are the minority and you are denied jobs, advancement, a place to live, etc? Just wait, because it is coming but you won't pay the price, your decendents will. What will you leave them? A second class status because "you had it to good and had to share, to be fair?"
Life is not fair! And a people who either can not or will not fight for the right to live and be the dominant for themselves and their decendants will lose it to a people who want to live and be dominant more, and to pass it to their decendants. This is the way of living things.
This is why America is falling amidst her own decay. Because the decendants of those who built her now sacrifice her on the altar of political correctness.
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? - how he diedYou don't even know what the altercation was about and you condemn a guy? You know very little of this man yet you are rejoice in his death? Wow. Sorry doesn't even begin to explain it.
- why don't you read?Uhhh not to burst your bubble big fellah but the heads of these rap labels by and large are dumb black fools/thugs.

This isn't capitalism pal...this is cannibalism. They are feeding on themselves and so be it. I don't see any redeeming qualities what so ever in them or their lifestyle or their music.
Don't even get me started on the useless nonsense that was caused by people listening to their music and the entire generations poisoned by its message.
When a rapper gives me a job that I can feed my family with, I will then see redeeming qualities in them. - Oh pleaseAnother lowlife off the street. Another young punk rapper who will not be terrorizing the streets of Atlanta and catching innocent people in the crossfire.
If his parents are upstanding people, sure I feel bad for them. But I won't sit around and weep for another lowlife who went and got himself killed.
The story is that he had some sort of altercation with someone on the plane. Gee I fly all over the world and I have never had an altercation yet.
Rap=violence=death=typical trash. - response"I defy anyone on this post to name just one positive aspect of this music and its culture. Anyone?"
Capitalism at work. These people put out the music their record labels tell them to. Who do you think is at the head of the record labels? Young black thugs? Nope. - Youth/DisciplineI can't help but feel these youngters' choices are related to what discipline they received, or did not receive, during their raising. All my buddies' parents - and my parents - whipped our ass growing up. The Principal whipped us too! And ALL our parents whipped each other's children; then called the other parents and we'd get it a second time when we got home! Guess what? We're all successful adults, with successful children and successful relationships. Go figure.
- rapYet another young life scwanderd on this whole "billy bad ass mentality" Truely a shame that a whole culture has degressed to this life style.Remember Public Enemy or was all that knowledge just in vain to those whome needed to listen the most!
- WowWalt, sadly much of what you said is the truth. My concern is I'm not sure if you're getting some form of pleasure from all of this.
Soothsayer, I'm not sure what to make of your comments but I will say I feel sorry for you. It can't be easy going through life with that much hate. - choicesAnother young man dead from poor lifestyle choices. Thug life = thug death. Youth of America, wise up!
- insensitive? We're more sensitive than we ever were but that doesn't mean that everyone is sensitive to things that make no sense to them and that they cannot relate to. But I won't add my insensitive remark here - we don't know what really happened - we don't know if this guy's death had anything to do with his lifestyle. I don't even know anything about his lifestyle. Just because he's a rapper don't mean we can jump to the conclusion that he's a thug and his death is a result of it.
- Just imagine....Imagine that the gangsta thug musicians decided to sing about hard work, personal responsibility, living within your means, and respect for women. What a change from their current celebration of crime, laziness, abuse of women, and generally living large.
I defy anyone on this post to name just one positive aspect of this music and its culture. Anyone? - oh come on...hopefully, soothsayer, you will change your heart before its your turn to go. regardless of how anyone feels about any genre of music, this was someone's kid. the same way my heart bleeds for teenagers that die driving drunk, i dont condone what they do and think they are stupid, but i am saddened by the loss... you got a lot of growing up to do.
- Livin' the lifeYet another victim of the black gangsta culture. The hip-hop thugs are doing to the black race that which the KKK and all the racist whites in the world combined couldn't do- murder tens of thousands of their youth and destroy their future.
Smart move, guys. - RapperSlowly but surely the rappers are diminishing
- ??Why would you wish that upon anybody? That shows how really insensitive we have become to violence. Isn't it ironic? The same people who desensitize us to violence is whose death you are calling for.
- Rapper gunned downOne down, way too many to go
