2 More Tech Students Robbed
(WSB Radio) Two more Georgia Tech students have been robbed, the latest in a series of holdups that have raised concerns in the area.
The latest robbery happened early Sunday morning, at Hampton Street, about a block from where another Tech student was robbed and shot earlier this year.
In the latest holdup, three men jumped out of a black SUV and confronted Ryan Lorber and his friend, Jim Kenney.
"I'm a little shaken up," Lorber says, "but, for the most part, I'm glad I'm living."
Lorber was able to escape the gunmen; Kenney, whose leg is in a cast, could not.
"I said I don't want any trouble," Kenney says. "So I laid down, emptied out my pockets and he grabbed everything I'd emptied out."
The gunmen then jumped back into the SUV and sped off.
Lorber hopes police might have the suspects on videotape.
"Where it happened, they have a video camera so, hopefully, they have something on tape," he says.
There have been three robberies in the area in the past two months and residents, like Roy Lee, are concerned. Lee wants to protect himself, but cannot.
"Because we're within a certain distance of the Tech campus, we're not allowed to have firearms to defend ourselves," he says.
Police have no description of the gunmen. As for the SUV, all they know is the vehicle has a broken tail light.
What others are saying
- Ga Tech RobberyNo Discription, yeah right. We all can basicly describe these thugs. Like someone mentioned earlier when are th cops going to set up some type of sting operation? REMEMBER THE COPS, THE MAYOR & ALL OTHER ELECTED OFFICALS WORK FOR US!!!! It's time to take stand & hold the offical accountable.
- Gun LawsWhen will people stop complaining about lawmakers reversing laws that only serve to disarm the citizen as if it was an unintended consequence. THE POINT OF GUN LAWS ARE TO DISARM THE CITIZEN!
The crook is already a crook and is therefore not the point. The point is to criminalize everyone and create a larger need for crime control thereby growing the state and increasing the politician's power.
What is sad is that the politicians of today are too dumb to realize the above. They actually believe that by passing more laws they are actually doing something about the problems they are legistlating over.
Government can not legislate or adjudicate solutions to all problems of society. Never has been and never will be. If is should, then you would have a fascist state. Then you would have the bullies/thugs/crooks in uniform as we do today but much worse. History is full of examples of this.
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? - human rightDefending oneself, is a basic human
right. Knowing college students mind-
sets today, has this been washed away?
Ask them one question: Do you/would you
ccl? You'll have your answer. - WHAT IS GA TECH'S POLICY ON SELF DEFENSE??Perhaps if some of those 'engineers' would start practicing with handguns with hollow point rounds -- especially when attacked -- a different message might be sent to the 'thug culture'. Isn't this getting just a bit ridiculous??
- It almost happened to meI've been a student at Tech for 4 years, and I used to live on State St. I've had my GFL ever since I turned 21 and carried it as soon as I got off campus. Our next door neighbor got robbed and maced at gunpoint and lord knows it wouldn't have happened to me. I had to reach for it once off campus and the guy flat out sprinted away from me. When will the lawmakers wake up and let responsible student licensed to carry a firearm arm themselves on campus?!? I shoot several times a month and know how to handle a gun. The gun-free zone didn't seem to stop all the other crazy people from school shootings - only the victims from defending ourselves.
But, the second amendment doesn't seem to mean much these days...
Hell at Georgia State the police sent out an email to all the students telling them that if someone tries to rob them they should not try to run away, give them all their stuff, and not to try and defend themselves! Their solution is to call the police after it happens... This country is getting ridiculous.
How about Atlanta make a law like Kennesaw and every household be required to have a gun. Doesn't matter if everyone even complies, just the idea would make criminals take a moment to think. - Smart kids???Hey Tech students, it seems that if you guys were really smart you would start arming yourselves! It does not take an Einstein to know that you do not walk downtown Atlanta streets in the middle of the night,,,UNARMED!! Are you insane???
Now take your smart pills and go buy a gun.. - Let students defend themselvesWhen are we going to wake up and get rid of gun laws that only serve to disarm victims? Clearly the "School safety zone" legislated on penalty of a felony conviction with 10 years in prison does not stop these robbers; however, as Lee says, it prevents law-abiding students from using all available tools to protect themselves.
- Firearms ARE allowedIf Mr. Lee is at least 21 years of age, he can apply for a firearms permit under GA code 16-11-129. This will permit him to carry his firearm within 1000 feet of the university, but not on campus. I was a GT student, and had my license ever since I turned 21.
- InfoThey can have GUN in their residence....
No Description .. HA! - Bait themHave a guy (cop) with a lot
of bling slow walking most
probable areas. He will get
hit. Entrapment? Don't make
me laugh. Removing scum and
thugs daily...
