Crew Demolishes Wrong House
(WSB Radio) Somebody's going to be in big trouble for this.
Work crews tore down a house in Carroll County. The problem is, it was the wrong house.
Al Byrd is the owner of the home. He says he received a strange phone call the other day from the man who mows his lawn.
The worker asked Byrd if he still wanted him to mow the grass. When Bird asked why not, the man replied, "Because they're tearing down the house."
"You can't imagine it," Byrd says. "I'm just incredulous that something like this can happen and no one contact the owner."
Byrd's house is now in ruins, destroyed by mistake.
"I said, 'I'm the owner of the house,'" Byrd says. "I haven't given anybody the authority to demolish this house."
As near as Byrd can tell, it's all a terrible mistake. He figures the demolition crew was supposed to tear down the house across the street.
What others are saying
- Re: GPS and no address on permitA lot of workers don't care enough to check with utilities. My neighbor was having a garage rebuilt, and the demolition team came a few days early to tear down the old one. Of course the neighbors weren't home at the time, and of course the electricity was still on. The workers happened to see me (the neighbor) outside and asked my permission to tear it down! I said NO I can't give you permission!!! So fortunately at that point they called the neighbors. The point is they were going to tear down the garage WITH the utilities still live.
- GPS and no address on permitThey had to have permits to tear the house down and utilities to ensure were turned off. This story sounds like a hoax. There's just no way they could have approach tearing down a house without being in touch with some utilities to make sure everything was off. Total cha-ching for the unfortunate homeowner if true.
- Wrong HouseSince there was a landscaper the house was obviously being cared for. What idiots.
- Stranger than Fiction! That is just like the movie Stranger than Fiction.
- House demolition Al ByrdThis man should get every thing he can get. The folks that did this should have questioned you know they had to look in the house and seen all of the stuff in it. what if someone was in the house?
- Wrong HouseThat has to be a first! Will homeowners insurance cover that?
- Wrongly Demolished HouseThey better do sonething "HUGE" to compensate this man for his loss!
- Utter StupidityWhy does this continue to happen to innocent homeowners? This is not the first time we've heard of this happening. I would be livid. Someone would catch hell for it.
- What happened to common sense?I assume this house was not in horrible condition and probably looked occupied, so why would somebody who is hired not make a phone call just to make sure that this is the correct house? There is only one answer: People don't care, don't think (and too often: don't speak English).
- Wrong HouseCan you CHA CHING. $$$$$$$$$$$$$. This going to cost someone some major bucks.
- House DemoThis is a case of uncalled for stupidity by using GPS coordinates and not having a physical address! But the whole story includes the house was not currently being lived in and the owner had been notified months ago by the yard crew that the power was disconnected and the house had holes in the walls. I will bet this firm in Texas that hired the contractor is going to be difficult when it comes to financial compensation for the error.
- Crew Domolishes Wrong HouseNow that's what you call having a bad day!
- Nightmare! My heart goes out to you, Mr. Byrd! I can't imagine such a nightmare! And you're right, one simple phone call could have avoided this. I hope they plan to make this as right as possible for you and maybe they'll remember this costly mistake the next time (provided, of course, that they have a "next time" opportunity. Unbelievable.
