Fight on Over Olympic Tennis Center

Listen to Sandra Parrish's reports: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

(WSB Radio) The fight is on to save one of the few remaining visual reminders of the 1996 Olympics.  The Stone Mountain Tennis Center, home to Olympic tennis, is set to be torn down by January when Gwinnett County will take over the site as a future park featuring the 15 outdoor tennis courts.

"It's a beautiful facility ... the outside is still as gorgeous as it was from day one," says Lee Baker, executive director of the Gwinnett Sports Council.

He's petitioned both the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, which owns the facility, and Gwinnett County Commissioners to save the stadium and turn it into a viable economic source for the south end of the county.

"We need a survey to see the feasibility of what I'm advocating... putting a roof on it (and) attracting additional events here to this area," says Baker.

But SMMA CEO Curtis Branscome tells WSB's Sandra Parrish they've spent 11 of the last 13 years and close to $3 million trying to make a go of it, but to no avail. The facility has sat padlocked for the past two years with weeds now growing through the parking lot.

The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, ACOG, built the $16 million stadium and its surrounding tennis courts for the Olympics.  Following the games, it turned ownership of the site over to the SMMA.

But there are only 400 parking spaces for the 7000 seat stadium which Branscome says has been a stumbling block from the beginning.

"It's of no economic value that we can determine.  So it's just best to demolish it and get it out of the way so that maybe some other active recreational use can be made of the property," he says.

Branscome says the stadium, as it is, needs about $2 million dollars in repairs, and it's not an expense Gwinnett County wants to take on.

"We are having our own financial issues, if you will.  It will require major capital dollars and again you have the whole issue of operation and it's not been successful in the past financially," says Gwinnett County Director of Community Services Phil Hoskins.

Gwinnett and the SMMA reached a deal in May in which the county will pay $1 a year for 50 years to lease the site with the agreement that the SMMA will demolish the stadium by the end of the year.

Baker is not willing to give up just yet.  He's hoping the Evermore Community Improvement District which includes business owners along Hwy 78 will step in and offer help.

"It's the gateway to the community. It would serve as the biggest stimulus that this area could use to get it up and going," he says.

What it looked like during the Olympics

What others are saying

  • [Sucking Sound]
What a black hole to pour money down.
  • Morons and Olympic Tennis Facilities
To state that this olympic tennis facility is of no economic value is ridiculous, and to tear it down would be absurd. If you built a McDonald's on Peachtree Road and locked the doors because you hired a moron that did not know how to cook hamburgers, the facility would have unrealized economic value, not no economic value. Some morons just cannot cook. To realize the economic value, find a moron that can cook and send the other moron home.
  • Lee's Pipe Dreams Again
Parking Deck? That would only cost about 10 million or so. Hmm, study 3 years ago to say it is sound, yeah I won't be going to that one. How much would a roof cost? 1-2 million, plus repairs plus new parking lot, I am sure the wiring and everything is perfect since it has been sitting there for 13 years. Yep it sounds pretty sound to me. So all we need is the Gwinnett Sports Council to pony up the 3-5 million to fix it up and then Mr. Baker can run all of the events he can find there. There you go problem solved!
  • Olympic Stadium Parking
Build a multi-level parking deck on the site of the parking lot Is that so hard?
  • Another Bad Decision by the Gwinnett Commissioners.
Why does Gwinnett County need another park in that area? Yellow River is just down the road. Sell it and quit wasting our tax dollars.
  • Stone Mountain Stadium
To say that the Stadium is of no economic value is not true. No report has been shown that the Stadium will need $2 million in repairs. A Structural Assesment report for SMMA in 2006 stated that "The deteriation that has occurred to dat at the Stone Mountain Stadium, while very noticeable, poses no immediate threat to the continued operation of the facility." If SMMA has done their due diligence in looking into alternative means of utilizing the stadium other than a tennis facility and as a multipurpose facility, let us see a feasibility study to put a roof on it and ability to attract events that will support a stadium of that size. If they have spent close to $3 million over the past 13 years, that is less than $300,000 a year, no wonder the facility needs attention. A feasibility study would show that the Stadium can be marketed and self supportive and an asset to stimulating the area including new visitor to Stone Mountain Park. If he is so confident in his assessment, why would he state that he would require an organization to have assets of $50 million to enter discussions of what can be done with the stadium? SMMA is going to "spend" $2 million to demolish the Stadium! To lease it to Gwinnett County for $1 a year! Parking is available at several sites close by including the old airstrip SMMA owns close by.
  • Parking across the street
The stadium does indeed need repair work. It apparently leaks everytime it rains into the rooms, including restrooms below the seating. As for parking, there are about 1000 spaces across Bermuda road at the adjacent Target store that never have cars in them. Is that a possibility for large tournements? Why does not ALTA have their championships there>
  • 400 parking spaces for for 7000 seats??...sounds like Al Gore's wet dream. Amazing what (useless things) can be accomplished with other people's money
  • Tennis
Tear it down! Turning it into a park for ALL to enjoy is a much better investment in the community.
  • Tennis Center
I'm sorry but anyone who thinks the outside of that facility is "as beautiful as day one" hasn't driven past it recently!
  • Tennis Facility
Looks like the pre-planning for the Olympics failed the cause. Why plan a 7000 seat facility with no parking, and therefore no future for the facility after the Olympics? What a waste!
