Lilburn Red Light Cameras Back
(WSB Radio) Gwinnett drivers beware, two red light cameras in the city of Lilburn are back in commission. All three of the city's cameras were suspended back in March after a 73 percent drop in citations due to a new law that added an additional second to the yellow light.
"With the cost of the program and the decrease in the citations and the numbers... we just couldn't afford to continue the program," says Lilburn City Manager Bill Johnsa.
He says over the last two months, as the number of citations began to increase, the city decided for safety reasons at least two of the red light cameras needed to be recommissioned. Those include the ones at Indian Trail and Hwy 29 and Beaver Ruin and Hwy 29, although the approach at Arcado Road will be eliminated. The light at Rockbridge Road and Hwy 29 will be decommissioned altogether.
Johnsa says the city was also able to renegotiate its contract with operating company LaserCraft, reducing its costs from around $33,000 a month to $12,000 a month, a break-even for the city.
"They worked with us and we feel like we have a very viable program... something we can afford and something that will help us," he says.
What others are saying
- Voter RageIf you like the cameras keep voting for the politicians who allow them. We can change things!
- More than a crockI totally agree Bill. I too have almost been in numerous accidents at the intersection of Indian Trail and 29. I have lived here my entire life and have never had a problem at this intersection UNTIL they put in the cameras. I have heard of study after study about how the cameras make intersections MUCH MORE dangerous, so it's completely obvious this is about the bucks!! They obviously think we are complete morons if they expect us to believe that they BREAK EVEN. I too am calling BS on this one.
- WOW, 33k/12k monthlyWin/win, $/$. What are you doing daily
to justify 12k? Do you really care about
T-bone crashes or is it just the $.
Falling tax revenues, MO $... RIPCRAFT.
AM, Look in the mirror, chief. - Lilburn Red Light CamerasThe key issue is safety. If the cameras reduce the number of collisions and injuries, they are worth keeping, even if they require subsidies.
- They could raise millions if police dashcam vids were sent in. I've never seen a cop not speeding unless he's 7 inches off someone's bumper.
- What a crock"A Break-Even for the city". What a bunch of baloney. If they weren't raking in the cash on these things, they wouldn't even exist. I have almost been in 5-6 accidents because I decided to stop to avoid the camera and the person behind me almost rear ended me. They would have flown through the light. This is a racket and they should be banned everywhere. Speed cameras, too, but thankfully they don't have those in Georgia...YET. Let the police earn the revenue they collect.
