AU Center Students Targeted

(WSB Radio) -- Georgia Tech students aren't the only collegians in Atlanta being targeted by robbers and thieves.

Students attending Morehouse and other colleges at the Atlanta University Center claim they have long been victims of crime.

Morehouse student Marcus Hunter says campus police do a good job of protecting the student body, but he wants Atlanta police to increase patrols off campus in southwest Atlanta.

He tells Channel 2 Action News "we want to ensure the safety of the students in this area is maintained just as well as the students at Georgia Tech."

Hunter and other students at Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, Spelman and the Morehouse School of Medicine believe the assaults and robberies committed around their schools have been overshadowed by twelve violent attacks since February on 13 people near Georgia Tech and Atlantic Station.

What others are saying

  • Attacks
The cowards are targeting college students. They know better than to attack us red-necks. We shoot to kill.
  • Me too!!!
    Oh brother.......
  • If you don't support police, don't expect free services
The AU Center does not pay anything into the City of Atlanta to support all the services they receive... Fire, Police, EMS, Public Works, etc... they are getting free ride... that is one of the problems in Atlanta, there is TOO much tax exempt property leaving the burden on the rest. Atlanta residents and businesses have to subsidize all the churches, colleges, state and federal government buildings, and other tax exempt properties utilized by non-local residents. Many other areas of the state have no or very limited state or federal government buildings and/or college/university campuses that are being subsidized for nonresidents. Someone has to pay for the fire, police and other services, let those who receive these services pay and not use the police power of government to force others to pick up the slack or be denied adequate services to the tax payers such as in Atlanta so that those who pay nothing can get free services.
