(WSB Radio) -- After more than 130 years, AT&T is phasing out the phone book.

The telecommunications giant is taking the first step toward ending publication of the residential white pages by submitting a request to the Georgia Public Service Commission for permission to stop home delivery of the phone book in parts of metro Atlanta.

Calling it a "substantial hardship" for the company that is no longer necessary, AT&T wants to abandon delivery of the white pages in Atlanta, Chamblee, Decatur, Doraville, Dunwoody, East Point, Hapeville, Lithonia, Sandy Springs and Tucker.

If the PSC approves the request, the change would take effect with the next scheduled phone book delivery in December 2009 and January 2010.

AT&T customers who wish to still receive a hard copy phone book would receive one if they request it.

In its request to the PSC, the company cites technological advances like Caller ID, wireless devices that store numbers and the Internet for not needing the books anymore.  It also emphasized the environmental aspect of not publishing more than 876,000 copies of the phone book, which it did last year.

AT&T will continue to publish and distribute the business white pages and the Yellow Pages.

What others are saying

  • Unemployment is on a rise and soon we'll be in the double digits. Do we really need anymore job loss in America? If we quit making phone books thousands will be out of work!!!
  • I Love the Yellow Pages TOO
The Yellow Pages are great for propping up the corner of the couch where the dog chewed the leg off and it wouldn't sit level any more. We use them to raise our bed up higher - no need to buy those little things at WalMart. They also work great to keep the car from rolling when I jack it up to work on it. I really appreciate all these books I get - they save me a ton of money. Hey, thanks Jeff for the other ideas - we don't use em for door stops, but that's a pretty good idear.
  • Telephone Books
The books will fade in use as their non technological generation dies.
  • Best used as...
I actually like the phone books. The pages make for excellent fire starting material. A good phone book is good for about ten cookouts.
  • I LOVE theYELLOW PAGES!
They make great door stops, booster seats, and garden mulch! Not much good for anything else, though.
  • BanThePhoneBook.org
Great move by AT&T. Just last week we started a petition (http://www.banthephonebook.org) to create an opt-in program for paper white pages. This story is a perfect example of why the country needs an opt-in option rather than opt-out or simply receiving these books without a choice on the matter. If you're interested in learning more about how much waste goes into producing these paper white pages, head on over to the site and, if so inclined, sign the petition and share with your friends.
  • Only if . . .
I wouldn't mind using the 'net to look up phone numbers if they actually had current numbers. I've found phone numbers (current and accurate) in the dead-tree directory that I can't find at all at AT&T's site.
  • it's about time
I was wondering how long it would take for them to realize this huge waste of money and resources. Same with the Yellow Pages - get rid of them!!
  • phone book
The reason so many people stopped using
them is because of the print. It is so
small that you have to call Information to be able get the telephone # you need.
  • Phone Books
I also carry my phone books from the front door straight to the recycling box. I always think what a waste of time & paper.
  • Mine never even make it inside the house. They go from the curb to the trash can.
  • Phone Book
I don't have a problem with this as long as they don't start trying to charge for the copy when a customer request one. I can this happening, the stop delivering them then some elderly person request one they will want to charge for it.
  • Phone book
Thank God! Just go straight to trash at my office and home
