(WSB Radio) -- Former Governor Zell Miller is hospitalized in stable condition at St. Joseph's Hospital with shingles.

"He's resting comfortably and improving daily," said Amanda Rossetter, a spokesperson for the hospital.  "Mrs. Miller is with us and she says he is looking forward to getting back to Young Harris."

Miller, 77, had been battling a rash that would not heal.  Rossetter says he went to the hospital in Young Harris and because he's had the infection for several weeks, decided to come to Atlanta where he was admitted on Saturday.

Miller's last public appearance in Atlanta came in July when he swore in Carol Huntstein as the new Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court.  He also spoke to the American Legislative Exchange Council where he criticized President Barack Obama's frequent travel.

Miller served in the United States Senate from 2000 - 2004 following the death of Senator Paul Coverdell.  He served eight years as Governor of Georgia from 1991 to 1999.
