GM Plant Future
(WSB Radio) -- Doraville does not want to be a part of the National Football League.
Nearly all of the people who attended Thursday night's town hall meeting had one message for the City Council -- they do not want the property where General Motors once ran an assembly plant to become the new home of the Atlanta Falcons.
Dozens of residents spoke out against a proposal by a developer to put a new NFL stadium on the 165 acre site near Spaghetti Junction. One woman told Channel 2 Action News "I think it (stadium) could bring a lot of traffic, as well as littering and problems for our city." Another opponent to the stadium plan said "I think it would be of benefit to
Doraville to develop it (GM property( into a mixed use facility." He added "I'm against any kind of theater or anything thing that would draw massive crowds." Only one person spoke in favor of a new stadium for the Falcons, but he did not live in Doraville.
Mayor Ray Jenkins would like to see something built on the site akin to Atlantic Station. He told Channel Action News "that would mean alot really, revenue."
Some Dekalb County business leaders and real estate experts have estimated that GM will eventually sell the property for about $45 million dollars.
What others are saying
- have you seen the area around Fulton StadiumThanks very much to "Mobie" for calling our city a dump. While Doraville certainly could stand improvement, I hardly think you know the neighborhoods there to call it a dump. I never knew they existed until I bought a home there.
Also, sadly I don't think a football stadium would be better than a mixed use development, have you BEEN down to Turner Field/ Fulton County Stadium lately. Not a lot of business booming there either. Sadly there's not going to be an easy solution to this in this economy. - No NFLDoraville is a city that has been in transition. An empty stadium would bring MORE crime. The NFL is not a sacred institution for most of us. Unfortunately, nobody wants to head to downtown Atlanta as it is.
- Stupidity at largeTo refute a few stupid points:
It will bring trash - this is Doraville have you taken alook around lately? What a dump!
Mixed use - you mean the City pay 45 mil for the land so it can be used for drugs and crime.
Like Atlnatic station : No revenue you idiot - Atlantic station is half empty! and who would go near that eye sore you call home? - Where's the intellegence and leadership today?Hey Mayor... What planet are you living on? Don't really think another new retail/residential facility could survive right now. A new stadium could boost your local economy fast and with additional events held in the stadium outside football season you would see an exponential increase in tax revenues. It would be like the City getting a bonus check every weekend...
A new stadium would put Doraville in the National spot light, attract more/bigger hotels, restaurants, sports retail facilities, you name it; the possibilities are endless. But if you want to fight it and demand something be built like Atlantic Station, go ahead. It will just end up like every other strip mall in Doraville; dilapidated and crime infested. But hey it will have a check cashing place in it; couldn't be too bad huh?
Just sayin!
