(WSB Radio) -- The Gwinnett County school system is kicking off a redistricting drive that will invoved 9,000 students reporting to new schools next fall.

The plan is designed to relieve overcrowding in the state's largest school district, as students and staff at 29 schools are slated to be re-routed to different campuses in the fall of 2010 as the district cuts back on trailers and draws boundaries for six new schools.

"We realize change isn't easy," said Sloan Roach, Gwinnett Schools spokeswoman. "We also know that the opening of a new school is something to celebrate. What we have seen in the past is ... people who may not have been real excited about the change, once they get to their new school ... their enthusiasm is just over the top."

School officials said the proposed maps will be available on the Gwinnett Schools Web site. Parents can weigh in on the plan before it is taken up by the Gwinnett Board of Education. Comment forms will be distributed and collected before a public hearing is held on redistricting on Nov. 19.

  • Gwinnett School Rdistricting
Sloan Roach states " We also know that the opening of a new school is something to celebrate". My response as a taxpayer: Great, another government school of government indoctrination. Has the county prepared the infrastructure to accomodate the added traffic? Widen roads, more stop lights, etc? or do they plan on using a cop to do this for them?
